Hi all,
I used to have a Nexus One and I've rooted every Android phone I've ever owned, mostly to remove the manufacturer crapware and get the stock Android experience. Sense isn't the worst thing ever, but I am wondering if anyone knows how to get and install AOSP alarm (clock program) and dialer. I think the HTC alarm program sucks, and while the dialer isn't terrible, it is displaying all contacts (including facebook ones) which I apparently can't change. I can make the contacts program show only my Google contacts, but apparently you can't customize that in the dialer.
Anyone got any clues or hints on where to go?

I've only used vanilla android devices (nexus one, g2), and I'm thinking about getting the sensation. Other than the obvious differences in the UI, what else is different about sense devices like this? I've read stuff about them not automatically syncing contacts with Google. Is that true? Can I replace the launcher with one from the market?

I actually far prefer Sense devices, although you can download a different launcher from the market, none are as polished as sense is. One of the greatest things being sense's widgets. As far as syncing with contacts I might be biased but I think sense actually handles this a little more flawlessly than most devices. It will sync with pretty much any major account you might have, email, twitter, facebook, google etc. I love the sensation, I came from an htc mytouch 4g which was also an outstanding phone. Do it and if you don't like sense you can pretty much find any kind of launcher you want on the market, although I highly doubt you will be disappointed.
If you get S-OFF and start playing with custom ROMs there are a few AOSP ones out there. CM9 for example. Virtuous Inquisition has Sense backend but has had the UI de-sensed as much as possible.
At the moment I'm playing with CM10 Alpha/Beta.
I have never had an issue with syncing contacts with Gmail, stock or custom ROMs. I think the issue you refer to is that as standard with sense you can say where to sync the contact when you create one, Phone, Gmail... The Phone contact can then be synced with Outlook etc. via HTCSync and not with Gmail !

Sense has a few apps and Widgets that other launchers dont have.
No that's not true, Sense can sync contacts with Google, Twitter, Facebook, etc.
Yes you can use any launcher from the market.
Hi all, I'm a very recent switcher from iPhone (just got the SR 5 days ago after owning the original iPhone and then the 3gs for the past 4 years) and had a question about the stock apps.
I really like the stock Samsung e-mail app over the Gmail app for managing my gmail accounts but one thing that is a glaring omission is the inability to archive e-mails. I know you can do this through the Gmail app but to me the Samsung app is just slicker plus it has unified inbox which was great on the iPhone.
In the original iPhone mail app you used to not be able to archive Gmail email for the longest time until a fairly recent update (i think it was the same update that gave us unified inbox- not sure though). Along the same lines, is it possible that Samsung will ever update the stock e-mail app to support archiving? If so, how do you update stock apps? Does it only come with a new OS update like ICS?
I guess I could be persuaded into looking at 3rd party apps but I think I really prefer to stay with stock because I know it has been specifically designed with this phone's hardware in mind and is probably the most optimized with regards to memory management, battery, etc. Thanks!
gmail for android supports archiving already.
You might be able to archive with activesync/imap if you move the email out of the inbox folder but that's more of a hack then anything else.
To answer your original question I would not expect many changes to the stock apps excluding those that are in the market (maps, gmail, etc) until we get ics.
Here's a challenge for all you pros out there!
The HTC EVO 4G Sense Roms are all missing the Google contacts filter. You know...The ability to add the check mark to "My contacts" or "Family" Etc. Unfortunately we have all been stuck with the only option of "Only show with phone number" and if you're like me you have a few hundred contacts including numerous ex-girlfriends that you don't want showing up in your contacts list for when the new girlfriend is looking through your phone.
This is the only phone I've ever see that doesn't have this ability. Damn you HTC!
So here is the challenge...
Can one of you pros hack the stock people app and add the Google contacts filter feature? Or maybe take the phone book app from another phone, such as the EVO design and make it work on the EVO 4G?
This has been asked by many for many years on this phone and after patiently waiting and searching I still have not seen it.
I've tried dozens of aftermarket phone books and contact lists, etc but nothing really works that great especially since the stock one is still there. I'm looking for a replacement for the stock people app not a bandaid or an add on.
Bump...
I guess no one can do this?
I'm moving back to a Pixel (I ordered the smaller Pixel 2) phone after not having used one since the Nexus 5 days. I'm curious if they ever improved the whole SMS/MMS text messaging situation that I had with the N5 (MMS would often stop working for no apparent reason in the Google "Messenger" app). What is the default app on the Pixel 2 going to be?
And if that app stinks, what's a better alternative?
Likely the same one included in and android 8.0 which is just named Messenger. However.. It's android, you aren't limited to the default messaging app anyway there's tons of options. One that I use is Textra, it has an ad on the top unless you buy it but otherwise I found it to be far superior than any default messaging app.
Hi I have just gotten a Pixel for my daughter. I am used to using HTC's and love the HTC sense but I cant find my way around the Pixel. I am having a problem getting the google contacts to display on the phone. and it doesn't show the contact name in Whatsapp only the number even though the contact is saved in google.
