New to xda, android, and my Tbolt - Thunderbolt General

How's it going guys? Just getting started here. I'm coming from an original blackberry storm, but been a long time follower of android (since it started) and supporter but just recently an owner, of a lovely Tbolt. I've had some experience with Linux commands (running Ubuntu) so it made the root fairly easy cause I could follow it (although stressful still being my first root of android, and I did it before the 1 touch came out) and currently running VirusRom(props to virus). I'm looking forward to the xda and gonna start learning how to code me some ROMs. That is all.

Not to mention I've found out I'm a ROM-aholic with this phone.

Hello guys&gals

Just introducing myself to all of the skyrocket users. Long time forum watcher new forum member. I love this place. My first Android phone was a captivate for att. This is my second Android (skyrocket)and I must say I love it.
I screwed up the stock ROM by fudging with the framework-res.apk and trying to alter it so that I could enable sip over cellular data. Bricked it. re flashed with stock ROM. Worked fine until I tried it again.
Now i'm using sky ice cream sandwich...I must say its nice. (sadly no sip over data ).
I'm a student and full time worker. I work on telephone systems and electronics/computers and radios for a huge company.
I'm studying cyber security and know Java( the basics simple programs) and am teaching myself C.
If there is anything anyone needs don't hesitate to ask. If I can help I will.
Thanks for an awesome website and pleased to be here.

Going down hill.........Now we movin up!..

Seems like the Dev support for this phone is going downhill fast, I was wondering if anybody new where to find the link for romracers 0.3 kernel could be found?

Sorry but......your kidding right? And the link for the kernal you want is in the op of the kernals thread in dev section

That's the response I expectected...but thanks for pointing to the 0.1 kernel! The 0.3 kernel (now called rom racers kernel was there) everyone is not a noob just cause they have a valid question...I've had this phone since the week it came out in November, I've rooted devices from a Nook Color to a Super Pad, and all those in-between. I actually exchanged my 4S for a skyrocket..(best thing I ever did) Ive flashed every rom and tweak for this device. I just get sick of idiots trying to make ppl look stupid for asking a valid question on these forums..

i would have to agree with you. i haven't had the phone for nearly as long as you have but from browsing around xda (specifically gs2 and here) i have to notice that by comparison development is much slower in this section.
disclaimer: this is by far not a complaint, just an observation. i love the development that IS currently taking place and am very appreciative of it.
What about search lol

I think dev work is kinda slow on alot of phones right now. I know it has slowed down on my nexus s because a lot of them are waiting for the new sources of ICS to be released. A lot of the developers are doing great work. I think once ICS rolls out it will take off. IMHO.

I wouldn't say activity is slowing. Although new releases are fewer now, there is plenty happening as far as cooperation and collaboration is concerned.

I feel pretty good about what we have now. ICS will come eventually, who knows when exactly but it will come. I have two other android phones and a tablet that all run ICS very smoothly. But I still choose this gingerbread runnin beast everyday over all the others. In my humble opinion, there will definitely be some frowning faces on the day ICS is officially released for our device.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
Honestly its all just hype. ICS will come out and within 6 months we will be jumping to the next firmware. I think the community should put more focus on fully customizing and enjoying the capabilities of gingerbread. I really don't think we will be satisfied otherwise. That's why devs get turned off to making ROMs. They make something awesome and we use it for a week and then want more. So much greed!

Development for Android is done mostly in Java. It is very simple programming language, after a few weeks of practice you should be good at it. Here you have a tutorial on how to create first Application: http://developer.android.com/training/basics/firstapp/index.html

The New Boston
The new boston has a 200 video series on android application development. It's a little bit dated but if you go to http://thenewboston.org/index.php. It shows you specifically how to develop for android 2.2 (froyo). that being said most (if not all) of those applications should fun just fine on any OS 2.2 and above.
The main things is that you are using the API level from 2.2 so unless you change it later on you won't be able to use newer features. BUT... it can take someone from 'eeerrr I think this be mah keyburd' to 'Yeah, i just wrote and android app and put it on the market. BYAAAH!!!'.
Definitely worth checking out. I checked it out and when they came out they were cuttign edge pretty much (like a year ago lol).

HA... I just realized that you said ROMS. well that is a completely different story... that is really trial and error until you figure out how everything works.
If you aren't running on ubuntu then download virtual box:
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
Once you have that the EASIEST way to get started is to download the ISO for ubuntu 10.04:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/
Once you have created the Virtual machine with ubuntu 10.04(simply because it is the best for development):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jC6jSiGSbUE
Then I recommend to get your environment setup you follow the instruction at the below site:
http://www.freeyourandroid.com/guide/compile-ics
Now that I actually read what you were askign for and am not a complete tard... hope this helps.
I looked it up and it also gave me a link on how to set up Ubuntu. So my next question is, where do you get source codes? I myself have a vibrant so of course it doesn't get source code updates although I know that some ports are from the gnex

sounds like xda veterans should compile an Android rom "how to for dumb dumbs" e book and put it for sale in the play store and on Amazon self publishing. you'd probably make a fair amount for yourselves and the site, depending on how you went about it; problem is I think all forums on this site would then be totally flooded with repeats, duplicate functions mods, crap roms, and just generally bring the average level of code down to hella-sloppy levels. yikes, pick your poison
I understand that serving requires a lot of time butnim serious about this. Not o my that my friend has an lg lucid and I have other people who would like development for that pho e which I would help with hopefully

roms are also largely in java (or davlik, anyway)
You can start by compiling something like CM10 (not an easy task, I might add).
Most devs begin because there's something they are itching to have but that doesn't exist. Once you've successfully compiled, you can start tweaking these things in.

Farewell Infuse

Thank you to everyone on the infuse forum. Just when I thought I was over the phone, a new Rom would come out. Keeping this phone exciting.
But... I finally bit the bullet and used my upgrade. ATT gave me $63 for my Infuse. So I used this towards a $99 LG Optimus G.
Unfortunately there is not much activity for the Optimus at this time, but I'm loving the quad core processor
Again thank you all and farewell

I made the same change last month. No regrets at all. The G is awesome stock rooted with frozen bloat.
I may though, inquire with scot about trying to port beanstalk over.........
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
That would be awesome! Scott's beanstalk build is fantastic.
Did you see this:
"Also... I have added a 'how to build/port' guide to Post #3 on the first page. It is intended to build/port the BeanStalk build to other devices besides the infuse. Please let me know if you have any questions"
That was posted by Scott
If you do port it, I will definitely flash and test

I tried to keep infuse for another 2~3 months but I broke the screen... and I had to pay $180 if I want to repair it
So I was forced to use my upgrade(no penalty), and I went for optimus G as well.
It's been about 3 days and I like it even as just stock since there is too much free ram...
But I kinda miss infuse already lol. It was my first smart phone, and I really had fun with it.
The infuse was a solid phone, especially loved all the development activity here.
The optimus is a powerhouse though!

Evangelion NERV Theme

Hey guys, was wondering if some one out there in this awesome world of XDA would be a to make a universal themed ROMS that is inspired by the Evangelion franchise.
Several years ago Sharp released a below standard phone with what I can only describe as the BEST looking theme I have ever seen to date... and this was bk in the days of gingerbread!
Since then the hardware has increased ten fold and although some themes or mods have come close, no one has, in my mind surpassed the way this themed ROMs looked.
Please find below a link to a video regarding this, forget it's in Russian but focus on the ROMs.
Anyone out there reading this who knows of any ROM builders that could undertake this?
Again not looking for themed widgets, looking for either a port or ROM.

i would be happy just to have some that work on the duel sim .. you have no idea how frustrating it is not to have it.
Being an Eva fan myself, I find this very relevant to my interests.
However, it seems that your request for a Rom or Launcher port isn't coming until an interested XDA member gets ahold of the phone themselves.
The closest that was gotten can be found in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290194
Basically a Chinese Blogger got ahold of the phone, wrote about it, and dumped some System files.
People tried to get them to port, but were unsuccessful, for the most part.
Seems some things, though, such as the official MAGI Widgets were able to be Deodexed and Signed and working on phones.
The thread died in September, however.
QNBT has managed to recreate the feel and performance of the SH-06D launcher using Nova and UCCW.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2025464
I know it's not exactly what you are looking for, but it's close for now. (Though I'm sure you are aware of it.)
In this thread, someone found a Japanese blog where someone else configured it through a different launcher called Glaeja.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1666996
So, there you go.
Seems nobody's quite done what you're asking yet.
But perhaps you can find some skilled people to assist the first thread in picking apart the system files.
Best of luck!
Ryo I think this challenge will be unanswered as there's not enough people who think this is worth the effort... :'(
