im coming from a blackberry which has a great cell radio. how are HTC's cell radios as far as a good signal?
I don't have a Blackberry to compare it to, but it's getting about the same signal as my Captivate (+/- 1dBm variation)

So it's pretty bad.....?
I just came from the 9700 and its a noticeable difference by usually one or two bars. I've never lost service totally on the inspire though. Not a huge difference for me. It's a Hell of a phone otherwise

The bars are calculated differently in every different manufacturers phone anyway. Not a good comparison. Only dBm is a valid comparison metric.

Yea, my Captivate was showing 4/4 bars @ 89dBm while my Inspire showed 2/5 for the same strength
Yes I would really love to see actual db signals from phone comparisons. Especially blackberries. Since that is what I have now....

As mant of us know, recently ATT announced it would begin enabling HSUPA capabilities on the Atrix and Inspire.
Ive consistantly had the H+ icon on my phone, and tried many ROMs and radios until I found the one I used now which consistantly keeps my speeds at 2-3.5mb.
Well earlier I noted an icon that showed a G instead of H+
I tested my speeds and kept getting 5.5mb or more consistantly. The phone went back to H+ and back to normal speeds shortly after.

The average customer didn't really notice that data speeds were slower until they admitted it officially. Now that the cats out the bag, I've heard some pretty nasty phone calls from folks who want their IP4 back and most of them are within 30 days.

Nice one! LOL
I've seen G on ATT here on socal, very briefly, on my nexus one. it happens in certain very weak dead spots where the phone is in the middle of latching on to edge or 3G. the G stands for GPRS, which is one technology below EDGE. so its super old and slow, like 20 Kbps maximum.
I dont know then. I wish I knew how to take screenshots. I also thought the G was the old technology, but I cant make sense of it. My phone said connection unknown as opposed to HSDPA and the speeds were toying with 6mbps. Im a mile and a half from manhattan and never had a dead spot in my home. Maybe ATT wanted to mess with my feelings?

Wow thats such a weird coincidence. I was looking at this forum on my phone then I looked up and mine said G as well. Did a speedtest and got 7MBPS download. I have never seen anything past 3 in my area. Maybe they are testing it. I was promised that I would get 4G by the end of the month since I am covered by the map. Also I checked my connection type and the spot was just blank, Didn't say unknown like the op or hsdpa like it normally does. Also I was thinking maybe the phone shows G since the "new" network type is unknown so the phone dosn't know what icon to display and since G is the "first" network type thats why
Man if only i could get off of edge here (
They need to start 4G. This phone is fast, but, its much faster when its up. I bought it just because of 4G. I wonder if anyone made a big deal about false advertisement. Because no one mentioned to me that the towers or whatever wasnt up yet.

Lol I live in the heart of Boston downtown to be precise and there's 4g everywhere here. Am very impress but I feel like when ever my phone drops 4g for whatever reason 3g seems so slow now. But some time I have to force the phone to 3g just conserve battery that's a damn shame Verizon because 4g is amazing. But Verizon still have to optimize the yell out of it beside the battery drain some time it hangs before starting to download data or load a page, got embarrass trying to show off to a friend. But no problem with 4g here wow you guys without 4g are definitely missing out but at least you got the unlimited 4g plan before it they change it.

,
I am right in the city of chicago but outside downtown. I had sprint and the evo and their 4g was seriously terrible. Could only get a poor connection when the phone was balanced on the window ledge with the window open. The 4g would not go through the newer vinyl windows. I also could never get a signal inside most other buildings. I could literally only get it reliably when I was totally out in the open (even outside my house at ground level I could not get a connection). So, wimax on sprint's frequency sucks. I paid my $140 etf and switched to verizon where I pay $10 less per month f*** sprint.
verizon LTE 4g coverage is just amazing. Im on it right now in an interior room of my apartment nowhere near a window. I get 4g everywhere I go, I am never nervous about the connection dropping. This is how a network should function. Sprint is just awful and i will never use them again in my life. I would seriously get a land line before I got sprint wireless again. Verizon is so impressive to me.

Been heavily testing my 4g all over my city of Greensboro, NC for three days now. No signal issues, no drops, stays 4g everywhere except in my office building. All four carriers suck in my building. Even then... I still get 4g inside most of the time. My downloads blaze! Running simultaneous tests against my woman's G2... my Sensation is always a little faster.
Average bandwidth = 3 Mbs to 9 Mbs
If you experience slow latency (like the market is slow to load) go to this post for a neat fix. Mine loads everything faster now.
-edit-
Takes me about 10 seconds to fully load everything on the Engadget web site with plug ins on and desktop browser mode. This is using Dolphin HD browser. That's fast!
If you use the speedtest.net app click the results tab after the test for the true speeds. The main display seems to lie.

Oh let it go already. Even the bodies that define the term have given into the marketing hype. "4G" is said to use a term everyone knows already. The few of us geeks who know otherwise understand just the same. I'm sure you do too.
Bottom line, it's got speed, that's what everyone wants. None of the carriers reach what the original definition of 4G was to be. The carriers call it 4G, so just use the term for the sake of agreement. What the carriers originally called "3G" was not really 3G, but let's not get caught up in a side bar when everyone knows what is being asked. Either the device reaches speeds the carrier calls their "4G" speeds or it does not.

i have tried the quick fix to no avail. i am running on 2g speeds around my house. 1 mile over though i am getting 4g speeds.
question is, is this a tmobile tower related issue or a issue with the radio on the phone.

I live in Knoxville, TN. I am lucky to get 600 kbps around here. I have occasionally hit 6-9 Mbps, but only a handful of times, and not for more than a couple minutes. Not sure if it's a tower issue, or a radio issue. T-Mobile is looking into. My speeds were much faster when I had my Evo on Sprint

Don't get me wrong. That is the reason I said I am dumping my HTC Evo. I ran a test on tmo speeds on a g2x and I was blown away. So I figured, why the hell do I need to pay for premium data when 4G is not even available in my area since Sept. 2010.
So I decided that I will be getting this phone tomorrow when it releases at a retailer. But my argument still stands, it is HSPA+.

Alright so I'm purchasing a device for my uncle. If I was purchasing it for myself, the answer would be simple if it were for myself (Motorola can go **** itself after the way they treated my Bionic and my Droid 3) but he lives in the middle of no where and I mean the middle of no where. They only offer dial-up at his house and basically this phone is his only connection to the world and I'm certainly worried about radios and reception. I know that it all depends on the area overall but I'm hoping to get a general consensus of what will receive better reception.
I know that Motorola locks down their phones and I know that they are known for good reception but in my experience, a open phone means a better experience all-around but this really isn't a trade-off situation. I need a phone that will receive 3G, he'll never receive 4 bars or anything like that but even 1 or 2 would be a much needed improvement.
If any of you guys live out in the boonies or anything like that, please let me know what your experience is. Here is a somewhat general area of where he lives. Just look at the map and you'll see what I mean.
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=ashf...chrome,mod=15&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&sa=N&tab=wl
people complain about the reception. ive never had issues with it though. in fact i was with my brother in a poor service area over the holiday and i had slightly better reception with my GS3 versus his droid razer (not max or HD)
Reception is pretty good from my experience playing with the modems, but I would say go with a Motorola or hTc for reception reasons.

Signal strength on this phone is absolutely terrible. I don't think I've ever seen my GS3 go under -100dBM. My Rezound constantly hovered around the 55-60 range. Everything else is perfect, but if signal strength is the only criteria I wouldn't recommend a Samsung phone.
For what it is worth, I have a SG3 running the latest jb leak and my wife has a stock razr maxx. Our signal is the same wherever we go. My Rezound did have slightly better signal than both of these but not by much. Hope this helps.
I live in Kansas and as much as Motorola pisses me off they have much better reception out in the sticks.
Definitely go with an HTC phone if you want the best reception, HTC has always been on top in that department from my experience.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I have seen just as many folks complain about signal issues with htc...moto is definately known for its radio quality. However I have yet to run into anybody with a device that gets substantially better signal than my s3. I have compared my device on the edge of 4g coverage against 3 razr's...they were all within -5db signal of eachother. The thing with samsung is your mileage will vary...some devices get grea signal others not so great. As previously mentioned, get the s3, if reception is bad simply return it within 14days.

I've personally had the best luck with HTC phones in the signal department.
Samsung is kind of known for weak signal compared to other phones.
Motorola, to me, is irrelevant. So I won't comment on that.

RAZR maxx is far far better in terms of reception and maintaining signal strength . The S3 really lacks in this department .

I love my sg3, but for reliability of signal outside of major coverage areas, it'd be maxx hands down. I can't even make phone calls in my house, where I could perfectly with my Rezound and the gf's Razr. So especially if your uncle doesn't care about rooting and roming, get him the maxx.

My wife has a MAXX, I have the GS3. Side by side we have nearly identical signal. Within a couple dBm. We live in the boonies also. Check the coverage map on the Verizon website. Its pretty accurate once you zoom in. I am VERY fortunate to have VERY strong 4G at our house. Definitely check the map that will let you about type and strength of signal in general. And I said said about the phone they are nearly identical.
