why no wcdma preferred? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I understand that auto prl saves battery but I'd like to use wcdma preferred instead. But the ns just wont let me. Any ideas why and is there a way around this?

Did you try going in to phone and enter *#*#4636#*#* than go into phone information and choose whichever you want

Of coarse. As soon as I return its back on auto prl

You can't set that with stock ROM.
So, don't waste your time for it.

Can't do it on bionix or cm

You need to edit the value of ro.telephony.default_network in your build.prop file.
0 = WCDMA Preferred

Added it to my build.prop
immediately after boot up i was greeted by a fc message (com.android.phone) every 5 seconds. and after a few minutes it still wouldn't connect to data or voice.
i removed the line of code and i was still stuck with the problem after another reboot.
So i rebooted into recovery, wiped cache and dalvik. re flashed my nightly plus stock cm kernel w/voodoo and just crossed my fingers.
No dice.... gonna have to do a full wipe....

Freaky, the NS must do it differently to other phones I've seen then. Although why putting the file back to how it was didn't stop the FC is a bit of a mystery.

I fought this battle for a long while too. Corrupted my install as well editing the build.prop. I don't think theres any way around it with the stock, but CM7 allows you to chose WCMDA Preferred.

So when I first installed CM7 I went in and that was what was selected. I just turned it off and now it won't turn back on. It keeps resetting to auto. Now I'm confused.

What he said.. PRL is different then pri
Flip or any other rom maker doesnt control the PRL. Its something used for signal on your phone. They update it OTA.
thanks, had no idea...and i don't think flipz has a custom prl updater?
wow guys thanks
your right, pri NOT prl
either way, im preeeetty sure i had 60664 running right before flipz released his custom prI

UHH why delete ONE simple nano. You should have more then enough room on an sd card for that 1 simple file that can save you trouble in bad situations. Like this one.
But maybe try resetting your phone. See if it doesnt change.

ehhh well as i said even if he did save the backup, nandroid doesnt restore /radio partition. thats where the prl and pri is.
the prl he got is a different carrier prl so he needs to update profile so sprint registers it.

[Solved] Flash EVO back to Sprint from Cricket/MetroPCS!

My roommate bought an EVO 4G off Craigslist that was pre-flashed to MetroPCS. It had a clean ESN, so I tried to have it activated. I finally got voice and text to work, but no data. After searching the web, visiting flashing stores, and spending hours on the phone with Sprint's so called "Technical Support" over the last week, I finally figured it out...
This is my first tutorial, so bare with me. And I apologize if this is in the wrong forum, it seemed most appropriate. I performed all this in Windows 7 x64.
First you need some software-
1. QPST - http://www.mediafire.com/?m4s81a4zsdbmhen
2. HTC Diag phone drivers - http://www.mediafire.com/?631456zwxi09hh2
3. PRL File 60650 - http://www.corolada.com/prl/
4. I'm not sure if you need ADB installed, but I already did.
5. You will also need to know your MSL. It will most likely be 000000 if your phone is coming from Cricket or MetroPCS.
Now that we have those, we can get to work.
6. Connect your phone via USB and type in ##3424#, your phone should now be in Diag mode. Make sure USB Debugging is ENABLED!
7. Open your device manager in Windows and right click the unknown device "HTC DIAG", Select Update driver.
8. Select Browse my computer for driver. Click select device from list, Click next, Then click "Have Disk" and point to the appropriate HTC Diag driver folder you downloaded.
9. You now should have HTC Modem installed correctly. Right click on it and go to Properties, Then click on the modem tab. Find your port number eg. COM1, COM2, etc.
10. Open up QPST Configuration, Click the PORTS tab. On the bottom right click add port. Add the port you just found from the step above, and hit Enable.
11. Go back to the active phones tab, double click your phone.
12. On the bottom click read from phone. Then save it for a backup.
13. Click on Roaming tab. Find the PRL box, click browse and add your 60650 PRL file you downloaded.
14. Go back to the CDMA tab. Under phone number click the Class 1 box. Enter your phone number (xxx-xxx-xxxx) minus dashes in the box next to Class 1.
15. Click write to phone. Hard parts over!
16. Once that finishes, unplug and reboot your phone.
17. Go to Settings>Update Software>Update PRL then reboot again.
17. Once its back up go into your dialer. Punch in ##3282#. Hit Edit Mode. The password is your MSL.
18. Once in goto Data Profile. Hit Menu then hit RESET.
19. Your phone should now reboot and be able to activate on Sprints network!
I already did this for my roommate, so I am writing this out of memory. I wanted to post pictures but I would have to take CM7 off my phone and redo all of it... grrrr.
Again, this is my first guide so i might have missed something. But I hope not. So many people have helped me here on XDA, so this is my contribution to the community. I hope this helps some people.
I did this to a hero. I believe I just cleared all the ##data stuff and pep update manually.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
I tried that to. But the only way to make it work was to flash the new PRL file. Neither Sprint or a Cricket flashing place could fix it. Which I thought was pretty stupid.
Another quick way of doing it.
Load Stock RUU.
This will rewrite PRL, NV items etc back as it rewrites the radio wich controls these.
Once done ##RTN# need MSL to use this, but this will help as well. and your done.
This is handy to have, and even better to have a few different ways to do it.

That's the PRI, not PRL. The PRL will be a five digit number. The latest Sprint PRL is 60675.
yeah thats what i figured, didnt know if that was a hex abbreviation with sprint's software for the prl or what... waiting for him to text me back...
i am pretty sure when i waited for him to activate the phone it showed a 3g icon when voice and text went active.. you sure if the prl is wrong everything else would work except data/mms/marketplace? thanks
the prl is = 60675

Well you have a Sprint PRL. Did the phone go through the Hands Free Activation when you tried to activate it? If you see a 3G symbol then all should be good. You could have him call Sprint and tell them data isn't working and you need to re-activate it...
well we had to type in a diag code then hit update and then it activated, not OTA to get talk and text going... he said he spent a hour at the sprint store today and they couldnt solve it
You could try my guide again, from step 17.
i asked the guy via text to do the guide through 17 to end, he says they tried that at the sprint store... without luck... i guess i can try it tomorrow when the phones in my hands unless anyone else has any other ideas....
what i did was followed this guide after flashing a oem RUU back to the phone
"RUU_Supersonic_1.47.651.1_Radio_2.05.00.06.10_release_CL195459"

Please Help - Unable To Find Network

so i tried to update to the latest radio by using the following:
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "dd", "if=/tmp/radio.img", "of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p20");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "dd", "if=/tmp/modem_st1.img", "of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p25");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "dd", "if=/tmp/modem_st2.img", "of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p26");
this left me with no data or network connection and also baseband was unknown.
i then took the firmware.zip from the OTA and did:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
Now i am showing latest baseband but my MEID is missing and it says i cannot use this phone without. Can someone please help me fix this issue.
Edit: After rebooting my MEID has come back but i and not able to connect to the verizon network. no bars just a X. It appears no network can be found...
While looking in Network setting > Network preference > I do not see anything verizon related. just vodaphone and F SFR GSM/UMTS
bump
I would reflash this firmware file:
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23329332407587377
Then flash whatever kernel you want to run, via fastboot
Then Reboot and wait 5 minutes. If it still doesn't see service go into Settings>Mobile Data and make sure Preferred Network is "Global mode" and then reboot and wait again.
EDIT: also, since you flashed the full firmware package you should probably go ahead and flash TWRP while you in fastboot flashing the kernel

Sprint SM-G900P Wont get signal from Metro PCS.... HELP PLease

Hope someone is up for a challenge.
Yesterday I went to Metro PCS to port my number and phone to them after using Sprint for 15 years.
They told me it was locked and I need to have it unlocked.
So I came home and found a guy on here to do it for me, Unlock.
I went back the lady registered the phone and sim and made a call to her store number and it rang.
I went outside and tried to call my wifes phone to make sure it would work and it tells me its connecting to Sprint network and I need to enter a credit card# to use it.
I went back today and they entered the APN info. and spent an hour with customer service and couldnt fix it.
They told me to wait 2 days and see if it would come on later in the week after they looked at their system.
HELP i need my phone.
what OS are you on? many stock OS's wont let an APN change stick, so itll revert back to trying to use sprint towers instead of the t-mobile stuff youre entering in the APN settings. Who did the unlock for you? If youre rooted, i suggest the marshmallow version of the resurrection remix ROM as it has all the APNs built in and all you have to do is select it. I use H2O wireless, and it had it listed in the APN choices.
did assadnow2k do the unlock? or stifilz?

ive even had it to where MOAR wouldnt allow me access to the area where you edit the APN, all you need to do in those instances is dirty flash (reinstall the ROM without wiping anything) and reboot, then itll again allow you access to that menu and youre off to the races again. yep. youre far better off that way. The stock ROM isnt too friendly with APN changes. Ive been using GSM on my G900P for about 10 mos now via several different MVNOs (cell service resellers like straight talk, boost, cricket, etc ect) and the stock ROMs just arent the best for this. Also, the best unlocking service out there that ive ran into is http://www.idoneapps.com/ They just know exactly what theyre doing, and have the moderators that provider the backup for their product that can guarantee that itll work. They rock.

Will this procedure clear data? Factory reset?
Can someone please confirm if this clears existing data? I thought Odin doesn't work in this case because of the locked bootloaded on Verizon?

Yes, it probably will. If you are that worried about it, backup your data first. Odin will work even with the bootloader locked. Locked bootloader does not prevent you from loading official firmware.

What app can we use to back up all data like apps sceen layout ect... since we don't have root on Verizon, I know we can't use titanium back up because we don't have root bit is their a similar app to do what that does

Not sure you'll be able to preserve that. I was referring to user data, not system data.

Helium or My Backup Pro, but they are limited without root, which means some data can be restored, but not all.
Sent from my SM-N920V using XDA-Developers Legacy app

I extract and I get several files? None of them being .tar files. Does anyone have the 4 files to flash in odin? Am I the only one who didn't get the 4 files mentioned when extracting the Md5? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Nobody?

You have to go in odin and select PDA and then add the entire md5 file! If you don't want to do it that way, then you have to download a zipping app like 7z or similar and create the .tar yourself.. Which is pointless unless you're planning on flashing 1 file like the boot.img for a reason or other.. The md5 file has all of the files that need to be flashed there's no need to unzip the files. Just flash as is!
If you're downloading from the OP then you need to unzip the file from the .zip because you can only flash .md5 or .tar.

Thanks. I have issue of my note saying "searching for signal" with full bars until i make a call. I dont think flashing the full file in Ap reset my modem to stock.

Try flashing a modem only file then which is for that signal.. Also boot into recovery using the 3 button combo and clear your Cache after a flash..

I've cleared it after flash and no fix. Does anyone have a modem file I could use. Does it have to be from the same firmware version? Sorry just not really experienced just need to fix this phone it's killing me. I got it off Craigslist don't know the history of it I just know that flashing a fresh stock rom didn't fix the issue.

Is it an actual Verizon phone? And do you know for sure that it's Verizon? Go into settings then about phone and tell me what model it says. If it says other than SM-N920V then it's not a Verizon one.. You can only flash firmware for a specific carrier.. Also check the APN settings too.. And about the modem no you don't have to use the same exact one from the same firmware version you can try a different one however I don't think that'll fix the problem.. Try checking the APN settings first.. Also if you just dropped a sim card into it without first giving Verizon the IMEI then it's not gonna work! You'll have to give them the IMEI and if the IMEI is bad the phone will never work at least not with Verizon.

It is indeed n920v clean imei through verizon prepaid. It gets apn through SIM card which is accurate I have signal T all times and internet/mms work. However when I boot my phone or randomly every so often it will say 'searching for service' throughout the day while still full having signal. During this time I don't receive calls/messages/internet notifications and it is stuck that way until I notice it and dial my voicemail which it then displays "Verizon wireless" and then all notifications come through.

Maybe try using this downgraded version from my Android File Host and flash it using odin but before flashing take the sim card out and after it's done flashing immediately do a factory reset by holding the power and volume down button and after the screen turns off and then back on select shut down and then boot into recovery and do the factory reset after it's finished put the sim card back in then turn it on and go through all the setup and see if it works.. Let the phone charge some first don't try doing this at 3% battery cause if it shuts down in the middle it can brick the phone. Not likely but it could.
