I am using stock rom on my Nexus S. Whenever I switch on data (3G or 2g), I notice that Youtube downloads about 100K data. I have AutoSync off, Background Sync off, but it still uses data every day. Anyone know how to disable this activity? For that matter, does anyone know what data it is downloading?
Thanks,

Hey.
Is there a way to restrict gprs and other cell based data transfers IF open or accessible WiFi is available ?
I have all data (including Wifi) set to off, but as soon as i touch anything data related (weather update in this case) it happily turns on my DATA(cellular) even though i'm at home with my own Wifi floating about in the room.
I would prefer some sort inteligent priority manager over dumb forced data lockdown.
That doesnt mean i dont want to turn data off mnaually. Is there any means of reliably shutting off cellular data channels ?
I'm on recent Elite RC3 (flashed yesteday, rom and update).
I am still on stock AT&T ROM, and if keep wifi on and data off, then all data goes through wifi without switching on data.
But, I guess you are looking for a scenario when both wifi and data are switched off.
Hopefully this isn't as noobish as it sounds. I am looking for a very specific app, I need an app that turns my 3G network off and turns it on perhaps every hour, just long enough for my e-mail to sync, then turns it off again. I have tried juice defender, which I assume worked but I couldn't test it because it turned the data back on everytime the screen was on. Sometimes I just want my phone to receive texts and calls and leave the data (and the battery) for when I need it.
I found another app, that supposedly didn't turn the network off but changed some verification settings, this app didn't work (I could still browse the internet and refresh email.)
I currently use quick settings in order to quickly turn my data off, but I would like something that did it automatically.
Some help would be nice, if you need any more info let me know.
Hi,
This is a newbie question. I don't have a data plan. If I turn off Wifi (and background data sync is off too), the phone will hang randomly in 4 or 5 hours (till the battery is dead, or I remove and reinsert the battery). I am assuming it's some app (maybe a weather widget or something else) that keeps trying to connect to some server and hangs the phone. Do I have this right? It doesn't happen if Wifi is on. Is this a common issue with android?
If that is it, is there a simple solution? I would like a simple solution such as no app/widget can attempt internet connection once I turn off wifi.
thanks
Rooting it a d installing Droidwall (firewall) fixed my issues.
I'm just wondering if anyone else is running into this. Even though I've disabled most the apps the phone came with (including all the Verizon apps) even when I connect to wifi my LTE doesn't gray out. I'm really not sure what is keeping the data on I saw that visual voicemail and caller ID could be the problem but I've already disabled both. Should I be worried about this? Are you guys getting data grayed out when connected to wifi?
It stays on but it doesn't get used. There's a setting (I think it's called download booster or something similar) where you can use WiFi and Lte for big downloads but the default option is this is toggled off. I wouldn't worry about it. If it really bothers you, you can always manually toggle off data.

That most certainly is not true because my account is showing I've used at least 200 mb over the whole day even though I've been connected to WiFi all day. On my s5 the data symbol would gray out to show that it's not being used. But this is not graying out and I can see that's it's sending and receiving data. Going to data usage shows nothing. I know I could always turn off data but let's say someone sends me an mms I won't receive it until I turn data on again. Trivial but bothersome nonetheless. That's why I was wondering if people are actually having their data sign gray out because mine is not.
Remember, data reported to Verizon is always delayed. It's normal for it to show both, but when WiFi is on it doesn't use data unless you are downloading something using the download booster.
The data usage tab is correct, if it doesn't show data being used on mobile data then it's not. Check the WiFi tab and you should see it there.

I don't have download Booster enabled. Yes I know it is delayed. But this was the first day of my billing cycle and I had been on wifi all day at my house and it still showed that I used 214 mb of data. I used a data monitor app to see if both connections are pulling data and in fact it is. I made a video call on hangouts and it showed 240 mb used on wifi while 40 was used on Lte. If the data is lit up and you can see the arrows under it lighting up while you're on wifi your data plan is still being used. Don't say that when you turn wifi on your data is not being used that is wrong. If it dims then it's not being used.

If the arrows are showing data on mobile data then yes something is wrong. Check WiFi settings to make sure it's not set to stop using WiFi of the connection is poor.

Hey
I have a small data plan and sometimes my phone randomly disconnects from the wifi while watching YouTube or updating apps. And I just wondered if there is a way to disable my mobile data when my GPS location is for example at my home and if I leave this place it gets toggled back on
Would be super helpful.
