Hardware Modding 4g into the Nexus S? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The Galaxy S 4g was just officially anounced by T-Mobile, and it's basically a Vibrant. My curiosity is, are the connectors the same between the Vibrant and Nexus S? Can a radio be popped out of the Vibrant and popped into the Nexus S, and work?
Probably sounds crazy

I think the insides of a vibrant and a Nexus S are different even though the outside is the same. So no.
Sent from my Htcclay's SuperClean using XDA App

Neat idea. I hope it's possible.

This is most undoubtedly impossible. Pipe dreams guys, pipe dreams.

I've done hardware mods on a Galaxy S i9000, which is basically what the Vibrant is internally.
Many of the components are modular in nature and very easy to pull out and swap, but I don't recall if the radios were.
I agree this is probably impossible, or at least way beyond the skills of most home hobbyists. Amongst other issues, you'd probably run into driver issues to run the new chip.
There are plenty of pics of the inside of a Nexus S and original model Vibrant floating around the take-apart site...OP might want to google for them and see if he can determine if the radio is modular or soldered into the main board.

changes within the several Galaxy S line were rather straightforward
but as some of you have seen the insides of the Nexus S is still modular, but the parts, locations, and sizes are quite different from the rest of it's breathen Galaxy S family

Evo comparison to the Galaxy S

I see alot of question from n1 users asking if the upgrade from n1 is a good choice. I also see alot comparison to the iPhone 4 and Nexus one. How come I don't see any comparison to the HTC Evo? Is the galaxy s not in the same level for comparison. I thing the galaxy is much better then the Evo. Lighter, brighter and faster. I mean running on eclair. I know now they had the froyo update. But I think once galaxy s gets froyo, this thing will fly. Even the just announced HTC desire HD/ace, will not compared to the galaxy s. Am I wrong for thinking this way? I just think galaxy s is a great android device. Then again just my thought. What you guys think.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Probably because the Evo is a CDMA phone and can't be used on ATT. Also, Sprint hasn't released their Galaxy S variant, so those guys don't have anything to compare yet!
This thing, with the speed fix, utterly kills anything else on the market.
The N1 got about a 2x speed boost just from Froyo, so I'd expect a speed fix PLUS Froyo on this Galaxy S will be unstoppable.
Friend of mine has the Evo. It's high end along with the Droid X, etc... But the Galaxy S is just "the best" and the Evo can't top it.
a "non-quantitative" comparison - a buddy came over yesterday and had his Evo 4G with him - and asked to play with the vibrant
when he first saw the display (i set up that live "waves" wallpaper), his jaw dropped - then i had him hit the avatar movie, for the hey of it - jaw stayed in the lowered position
he knew about the GPS problem we've been dealing with, but when i said -'now you know why i've been hoping / holding out for a fix to the gps problem", he understood
I know he left here weighing the cost of a changeout to Epic 4G when it hits spring
there's no comparison on display, none - and the speed ( i don't have a ton of apps installed so there's no lag) -
the UI, ie TouchWiz or whatever it's called, that's up in the air still but we'll see what 2.2 does

LOL, I did the same thing with Avatar (loaded myself on the Captivate) to an iPhone user the other day.
The problem with the Epic 4G is it'll be bigger, heavier, bulkier than the other candybar variants.
I also didn't really notice much lag but I must say in-app performance is vastly improved with an EASY PIE lag fix that takes you two minutes (assuming you've got ADB working, etc). Push 3 files to it, then run 1 of them, reboot, done.

The better comparison would be the Evo vs The Samsung Epic, since these are both CDMA phones that run on Sprints network. But yes, I agree the Galaxy S line of phones are the cream of the crop hardware wise and don't get the attention like HTC or Apple devices.
With the exception for one's sotrware/ui preference, there is no comparison with the hardware. The Galaxy S is simply better.

Bad support like the Captivate?

I was at the ATT store yesterday and I liked the HTC and the Infuse a lot. I know the Infuse has better specs over all. The issue that is holding me back is the horrable support and updates I have had on my last two Samsung smart phones.
I am wondering is the support for the Infuse any better. Or is Samsung still at their very slow pace? I am just not sure if I want to get a Samsung again because of what I have seen in the past.
I wouldn't put all the blame on Samsung, the carrier (AT&T in this case) has to approve and bloat the build, so that's why. The Infuse is supposed to be GB soon, but either way, thanks to LinuxBozo, we can run i9000 and captivate ROMs, plus he's working on CM7.
Sent from my 4.5" Super Phone.
I have not seen that Samsung is any slower than any other manufacturer.
We have the Infuse and Inspire...both are great but I choose to run the infuse. Both are rooted so I could really care less about updates ; )
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Neither have I. AT&T, however, is slower than any other carrier. Also, they DO seem to be more likely to delay a Samsung upgrade for whatever reason, but it's their fault not Sammy's.
What put a bad taste in my mouth wasn't the updates. With all the custom roms, who cares. For me it was samsung's refusal to acknowledge the gps issues and it was a back and forth game with them and att. But, everyone deserves a second chance so here I am.

Well, this time they can blame STMicro. The CG2900 is clearly not that hot of a chipset. Better than whatever they used in the original GS series based on all accounts I've read, but still nothing compared to the classic SiRF Star III or the curent king, MTKv2. Heck, it doesn't even compare to the ST Cartesio, which is what I'd consider a "mediocre" chipset at best.
That said - all of the mobile GPS chipsets suck. AGPS is such a scam. It really means "we've crippled the **** out of our correlators such that to even match a decade-old Garmin eMap in performance, we need the cell network to assist." This is the case with every cell phone I've ever used (Qualcomm gpsOne, Samsung solutions) except for possibly whatever Samsung included in the Tab 10.1 - that seems to be a pretty solid GPS chipset.
The problem is that good, solid GPS chipsets cost money...

HTC Vivid or SGSII Skyrocket?

I was going to upgrade to a SGSII until I just heard these two are coming out in the next couple weeks.
Issue with SGSII is now the user base and Devs will be split between these two devices. Add to that, it's still unclear if the phone will be on Exynos or Snapdragon - which could affect the Rom base.
The Vivid however looks like a really nice phone as well. Just unsure how many Devs will be jumping on that. Add to that it's a qHD screen (although probably not close to the SAMOLED+ in terms of colors and blacks).
Decisions...
But 4.5inch on a 800x480 doesn't seem to great. The qHD is quite better for a 4.5inch.

The GS2LTE is a 1.2GHz clocked CPU; therefore, it is an Exynos and not the 1.5GHz Snapdragon present in the TMobile version.
The Vivid, being the only AT&T HTC device (and since it's a newer HTC device, hopefully stock unlocked bootloaders), should have a decent following both in general userbase and in development. I get the feeling that the only reason why people gravitated to the Captivate is due to the fact that it was AT&T's only reasonable Android device at the time.
I've just been so frustrated with Samsung's stock experience on the Captivate and all the problems that this phone has been giving me, unlike my friend's rooted and near-stock Inspire 4G, that I will never consider buying a Samsung Android device again. I don't care how good it looks on paper; the Captivate did not really work in practice until developers got their hands dirty and fixed it for the rest of us.
HTC.......
the SGS2 is great, but HTC always gets the latest and greatest and the most dev support....

As much as I'm getting frustrated with my Cappy, I think I'm going to wait it out and see what other XDA members say about both of them before buying. Also, I want to see something official from the manufacturers and ATT on whether or not these are getting ICS.
I don't know about this (just thinking out loud here), but could the resolutions change after an ICS update? If it's possible, it would be worth waiting to see what happens after (if) they get an ICS update.
I really want to trust the specs from Samsung but after the GPS issues, the reboot issues, the poor camera quality, the lack of release updates (be it ATT or Samsung) - it's going to be tough to woo me back to another Samsung phone. I know I have a 1GHz phone with good hardware in my hands but my senses always feel like my wife's Nexus1 runs smoother and better on older hardware.
If Samsung (and all phone manufacturers for this matter) actually cared about the customer there would be one form factor across all wireless providers to help encourage innovative accessories and to help reduce the cost of accessories for the customer. Ok, now I'm ranting on a tangent. Time to stop.
The SGS2 i777 already has a good Dev base and continuing to grow already. The sgs2 i777 has in common with the i9100 as we that have/had cappys should know the i897 cappy and i9000 were like sisters and is HOW we had so much Dev support. Most the devs that I have seen already are stating that they are staying with the i777 and NOT moving to the i727 skyrocket.
There are already a few post over in the ATT SGS2 General forums debating this so you can catch up on it beforehand.
Basically it is an ALMOST FOR SURE thing that it is NOT the 1.5Ghz Exerynos chip in it since Samsung stated that ONLY test chips were ready by the end of this year and should make it into phones by the middle of 2012.
The screen is .2" larger but with the SAME 800x480 resolution.
It is Lte which is the ONLY GOOD THING I see in it unless you live in an Lte area now and don't stray out.of that area. The Lte coverage will ONLY BE 12 markets by the end.of the year and will take a few years to spread it out better.
Back to the Dev support, if you look into the tmobile section of xda you will see how slow the Dev support is there and how they have like 1 base kernel that is not tweaked much at all. The Dev base is not too good compared to the Dev base of the i777.
The reason I mention the T-Mobile version is it sounds like MOSTLY it is the same phone with the same chipsets just with a different Lte radio.
I came from/still have 2 of 3 of my cappys, went to the sgs2 i777 on Oct. 4th and Lte will be in my area by the end of the year. I am within the timeframe to return the sgs2 now but wont be doing it due to the Dev base and the similarities with it and the i9100. Which as we know the i9000 got all the updates and goodies which were pretty easily ported over to out captivates since they were similiar. The SAME is/will be true with the i777 and i9100. The i727 doesn't have a sister unbranded phone to port from so will likely be at the mercy of ATT for future software updates. The i777 should get ICS shortly after the i9100 well before att decides to give us ICS on either phone. So to make a long story short I am choosing because.of the Dev support and compatibility of phones already out there. The i727 will be a 1fer phone, one of a kind for the most part. Not wanting to start a i777/i727 flaming war here as each person will have their own ideas about it. That is how.it has already turned into in most of the post about this subject over there. Just giving my thoughts and feelings here.
Plus I have always qualified for an upgrade.on my line every 12 months as I did this time. So 12 months.from now Lte may be in a better spotlight with coverage, the sgs3 should be making its way by that time. The i777 sgs2 kicks ass for sure and I have not had any of the little learning issues/bad flashes/ test software as when I started out with my cappy last year in July. It just works without any of the hiccups. We had actual roms on LAUNCH DAY due to being SO CLOSE to the i9100...

I guess it's true and I thought this before. If going for a SGSII, no point not getting the original - especially since soon ports of the International SGSII will be coming around and the Skyrocket might have different HW.
But the HTC is tempting as they usually make really nice phones - and there might be a good amount of Devs and people in general jumping on it after the Inspire.
Looks like the SGS2LTE has the Exynos 4212 just from comparing hardware specs. The 1.2Ghz version in the regular SGS2 the Exynos 4210. Throw "Exynos 4212" into google search and you'll see some impressive specs. It is supposed to have 30% better power use and 5 times more powerful graphics performance. I'm not an expert, but this is just what I think is under the hood.

Once the chipset is officially confirmed exyons vs qualcomm that will be the deciding factor in ROM porting. If the skyrocket has the qualcomm chip, there will be no i9100 ports. The only chance of ports will be the TMo version, which should have very little likelyhood of being any better than the ATT version.
There is a lot of circumstancial evidence pointing to the qualcomm chip, check out the several large threads in the i777 Galaxy S II forum. Most devs chimed in and have said the i777 will be the only us version capable of getting ROM ports from the I9100, because they are so close.
There is no proof yet the Vivid will have an unlocked bootloader when shipped.
If you enjoy flashing ROMs, or want the most selection in ROMs, the i777 OG GS II will likely be your best bet.

Ah, first world troubles. I seriously doubt either phone will disappoint in any showstopping way, with or without a substantial amount of developer support.
Currently I have a Galaxy S II Epic 4g touch on sprint. I will be leaving sprint for multiple reason and going to AT&T to get the HTC Vivid. In my opinion samsung makes better phones but HTC gives you a much better user experience. Here are some pro's and cons of samsung and htc (my opinions are based on my current phone the gs2 and my previous phone the evo)
Samsung beats HTC at:
Screen is better
Camera is better
CPU is faster
Sound on speaker is louder and more clear
HTC beats Samsung at:
Way better widgets
Screen is more sensitive
GPS actually works (gps on samsung phones are always pure failure)
Higher quality plastic
please dont get mad if you disagree this is just my opinion. I will be getting the white vivid and will never get a non htc phone again.
The normal SGS II is better than the Skyrocket. FYI.
The one real downer to the SGS II LTE that would probably stop me from getting it is the resolution is 480 x 800 pixels @ 4.5 inches = 207ppi pixel density?? REALLY?! I think the G1 had better than that
So the HTC vivid and the SGS2 Lte both have worse processors that the OG SGS2? One with 1.2 snapdragon and the other with 1.5 qualcomm?

Only downside now w/ the Vivid, is that it is plastic and not the usual aluminum unibody construction. One of the things that always separated HTC from Samsung IMO

It will, but not everyone is willing to fork over money off-contract; I've heard that they're changing it to allow multiple carriers to subsidize, but still. I am passionately avoiding Samsung devices from now on.
I thought Nexus is exclusive to Verizon in the US. Not much help for the ATT, Tmobile and Spring folks.

Samsung's last kick in the pants

I just stumbled across something amusing. While wandering around the Samsung website looking at the upcoming Galaxy S Relay 4G, I saw a link offering to buy my old phone. So out of curiosity I clicked it. It asked what model of phone I had, if it was functional, if there had ever been any liquid damage, and if the screen was in mint condition. I filled it out truthfully. Sidekick 4G, works perfect, no spills, and a screen which has a light blemish. Then I clicked get quote.
$5.
FIVE DOLLARS!
Good god, if that isn't an insult! "Hey, thanks for buying this phone that we rushed out and then completely failed to support in any way. Here's a fiver! You can put it toward buying one of our new phones!"
Out of curiosity I tried again, this time selecting that the screen was in perfect condition. Even that was only enough to raise the offer to $30. I could sell the box it came in on ebay for that much!
Sigh...

It's difficult to say. There were a number of non-working builds posted here that were presumably test builds by Samsung that never got pushed out by T-Mobile. The KJ2 firmware was probably one of the last they made. I don't think anything newer was posted after that one. So, Samsung was working on the phone, but it doesn't seem like they were able to get one that met T-Mobile's standards until the KJ2 version. At that point, T-Mobile probably was satisfied and didn't feel like continuing to push more updates to the device. That's just a guess. While KJ2 was an improvement over the 2 previously released firmware versions, it still leaves much to be desired. I wonder if there were any experimental/pre-release GB builds made for the device.

Well, just the processor is not the big coincidence. Even bigger, is take a look at all the "Supported" devices in the aries series:
GT-i9000, Captivate, Vibrant, Fascinate, etc...
They all have a PoP (Package-on-Package) configuration with a 512M OneNand Flash.
Now look at Epic4G (not touch), SGS4G (SGH-T959V and SGH-T959W), and SK4G. They all have a 1G Flex-OneNand Flash, in a similar PoP configuration. These are second generation SGS devices.
All of these phones have the Samsung Hummingbird Cortex-A8 core (aka: s5pc110, Exynos 3110, whatever they are calling it this week).
All of these devices also have 1G of Ram in the PoP config.
All if not almost all of these devices use Atmel mxt224 touchscreen sensors (yes, sk4g does too).
All if not almost all of these devices use a TL2796 LCD Panels. SK4G uses a UPD161224 LCD Panel.
The second gen SGS phones - that are gsm - seem to use the ST-Ericsson m7530 HSPA+ Lite (Thor) modem. This seems to be a different modem then the normal m7530 modem (not Thor) in the SGS Vibrant.
Almost all of these devices have very similar GPIO pin configurations, and are almost the same. Some phones use different pins to do different things. And I am slowly learning to ignore what is done for the first generation sgs devices for GPIO because it seems the second gen devices do GPIO a little differently. This maybe because how the modem is wired.
SPI is almost exactly the same. I2C setup is also exactly the same as first gen. A few devices need different regulators enabled, like the rtc on the second gen phones, and there is some other regulator that needs to be disabled on fascinate that all the other phones use.
I've also noticed that on odd devices, like the GT-I9001 (which uses a qualcomm processor), the devices used are virtually the same. Just a different processor for the core. But still use mxt224 touch screen, etc... weird huh.

But still use mxt224 touch screen, etc... weird huh.

You my friend are quite intelligent, haha. I couldn't imagine doing the things you do in decades. That's a lot of brainpower.

I second that. I am astounded that you have not found a job yet, bhundven. Your knowledge should raise an eyebrow over at Google.

It's a very competitive landscape. So many intelligent people applying for the same jobs. Google, and others just sit back and get their choice of the cream of the crop.
My professional experience is not the same as my personal experience. Professionally, I've done more sysadmin and network admin work, only recently working on the job with embedded linux and embedded devices.
Personally, I've been working with linux since 1997 and have applied myself to learn language theory, operating system design (and wrote a small operating system in c++), and electronics where I originally started making guitar effect pedals and tube amps in 1994 or 95. Now I'm buying microcontrollers and making neat little gadgets and interested in home automation/security systems. The thing is, these companies are looking for that academic style educated people. I'm an over-achieving, self-starting, self-educated person. And I just don't answer their algorithm and "basics of computing" on a whiteboard like everyone else does. I hate whiteboards. I program computers much better
But when you apply for a job, with a bigger company like google or amazon or whatever, they put you through this cookie-cutter process that makes your brain swirl around. By the end of the day, you don't know if you are you or who. I'd rather work for a small company where I can have a larger affect on direction and know everyone else is also working towards the companies goals. Startups and smaller companies are just not hiring much in this economy.
I was unemployed in 2006 for about the same amount of time, with a similar economy issue. It'll change.
EDIT: oh yea. I turned donations back on. I really don't expect anything, because there wasn't much going on there before. which is why I turned it off in the first place. But to appease those that freaked out... there ya go

[Q] Has anyone thought about their next phone?

Say your MyTouch 4G Slide died, what would be your next phone?
I have a personal list of bare minimum requirements.
GSM
1.2+ GHz Dual Core
1+ GB RAM
16+ GB internal or a MicroSD card
4G capability (Marketing 4G, not necessarily ITU 4G)
Dev Support
Under $500
Used is ok, but I'm tired of spending time and money on cannibalizing phones for parts. Here's MY current list.
Galaxy Nexus
Galaxy S Blaze / Relay
Galaxy SII / SIII
Google Nexus 4
HTC Amaze
HTC One S / X
HTC Sensation
HTC Vivid
Huawei Ascend D / P1
Huawei Honor II
MyTouch 4G slide
Oppo Finder
Xiaomi Mi-1 S / Mi-2
Xperia ion LTE
Yes I have, and I have been called a snob by some for what I want out of my next device. But this is all I want/care about:
1. It has to be a Nexus or I won't buy another android device ill go iOS.
2. Dual Core
3. 2 GB RAM
4. Dev support for ROMS such as Paranoid-Android/CMXX/AOKP.
5. At least a biweekly update of said ROMS.
6. Not to be called a snob for wanting this stuff.

I have to agree with Strapped, though I'll never be desperate enough for an iOS device. But, I've resolved to only have a Nexus device from now onward. They may not be the state-of-the-art or most powerful, but they are darn sure the best supported by devs AND by Google, so will always have the choice of a custom or a stock ROM that is up-to-date. Oh, and it has to be GSM since I need it for travel.
I was thinking about grabbing a Relay, but not until the price comes down. I still need my hard keyboard.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201
hardware KEYBOARD a must (slide-out, and would be nice to have it tilted too)
pure and unlocked "nexus" Android a must (never again locked or crapped-all-over Android OS for me, certainly no overpriced junk iOS or WP - but I may think about BB10 OS if it is still alive, lol)
at least 4-cores, more than 1GHz (CPU)
at least 2GB RAM
no more than 4'' screen (no less than 3.8'') - unless the actual screen is the entire front surface, then up to 4.5''
good video chipset (GPU) to play any highly-compressed HD/2K videos smoothly
GSM/4G of course (can't wait for all those CDMA garbage networks to die)
front cam (for videocalls)
if it must come with built-in video/photo-snapshooter on the back, it must have 2 microphones to record sound in stereo
don't care about built-in storage space, but must be able to effectively use 128GB SDXC U-I (and larger),
and card MUST be accessible without removing cover (that's the biggest flaw of MT4GS imho)
That's all
Oh, add a wireless charger to my list, but I doubt this will ever catch on en masse...
I had my first Dyna-Pik electric toothbrush using wireless charger back in 1991 and I always thought it's the future, but as time passes by, I now doubt it will ever come out from a niche aftermarket phone solutions...

I'm right there with you on every point - the only thing I would add for my own list of wants is for the device to have a physical keyboard. There are far far too many situations where I need the speed / precision in my typing that I can't seem to get from the on screen keyboards, where I find myself frequently fighting with the "intelligent word searches" because I am using technical / engineering vocabulary that is not in the dictionaries, or I'm pecking out small bits of code that the phone thinks is my inability to understand english.
If I could wave a wand, I'd want a refresh of the Motorola Photon Q without the USA blocked GSM bands. Since the Motorola purchase from Google, maybe it will happen. I also think I read somewhere that someone found a way to flash a radio to the device that enables USA GSM, so I might do some digging into that this weekend.
If that is unreasonable, another imaginary product that would do me just fine would be a "slider/flip case" that fits on the Nexus 4, giving it an exceptional four or better yet five row keyboard.
In the end, I'd be willing to drop $500 off contract for the right phone, and I'm sure a number of other people looking for a HIGH END device with keyboard would agree... We don't need more mid-range devices that are more or less the same 1.2ghz dual core device repackaged for the last three years (No, adding NFC to an aged platform does not lead me into the future) - and they wonder why the demand is low?

You seem to have both extremes..... Open Nexus with Dev Support or totally locked iOS.
The Samsung phones are ok, though the SIII is a bit big for my taste.
The HTC One phones looks fine, but the rest seem somewhat boring.
And I have some reservations about the Nexus 4.
The Huawei, Oppo, and Xiaomi have weak support here.
I still like the MT4GS, but I've been frustrated with it lately. Every time I have to take the phone apart I end up having to replace a digitizer or flex cable.

Yeah but my iDevice is oh so smooth. It's on my lap right now texting the wifey.....yeah yall didn't know I rocked iOS huh? And I don't think either is extreme. If wanting dev support is just to crazy then ill have to support my own device because I DON'T buy phones for what they are out of t he box, I buy them for what can be done with them after I get home and logged into xda.
When I took my DS apart the LCD was literally shot and fell apart in about 4 pieces. So I took my good motherboard and put it in cybots bricked device and it runs all this forum stuff real nice. I'm waiting to see if my new device was stolen out of the mail then I'm gonna mail a working device back to cybot, whip some ass and hope I don't get locked up for smashing this guys face. Yeah fun times in my neighborhood. But all that means is ill be forced into another phone

im will be upgrading soon and will either get the note 2 or the nexus 4. im not sure which yet......i have a few friends with the note 2 and i have gotten to mess around with it. it seems there is plenty of development on the device already. but the nexus still keeps calling my name
I just had to buy a new one because my camera stopped working 2 mounths after the guarantee ended For me a keyboard is requirement 1. There isn't that many out there with better spec. I wanted at least a 8mpix camera. 1GB ram. dual or quad core over 1.2GHz and the right frequencies to work in Sweden. The only one that could work is Motorola Photon Q 4G. But it seemed to currupting sd-cards and had bad battery life. (worse than MT4GS), Anyway. I ended up with a new MT4GS
hmmm ideas for the mytouch 4g slide 2
My girlfriend has the Samsung Galaxy Relay. The keyboard is nice, the screen is fine, and someone is already working on CM9 for it (but the keyboard doesn't work completely yet and the camera doesn't work yet). My only gripes about it are that the slide mechanism doesn't feel nearly as satisfying as the MT4GS and that the bezel is huge.
My girlfriend replaced my MT4GS so I'm coming back here after using a Nexus S. I'll miss CM10.1 a lot. ;_;

If I have to move from this device, I would probably be more inclined to getting the Note 2 more than the Nexus 4 ( whixh are basically the only reasonable options available now and in the near future)
This is because right now it would be easier and cheaper to get a Note II in my country than it would be the Nexus 4. Also, looking at the Note II smart dock available right now for the Note II makes it even more of a no brainer for me. The dock has 3 USB ports, hdmi out, audio line-out which practically turns the device into a PC or a gaming console depending on how you would like to use it.
I hate touchwiz, so i wound rather have the device dualbooting a jellybam-like AOSP and Linux. Considering the amount of brut the device has (1.6ghz quad with 2gb ram) I'd say it would be perfectly suited to run Linux natively, and not through vnc. Linux would probably put the dock to better use than Android anyway. I know Ubuntu Phone Os is on the way but it's a long way off. I was looking around and saw the TF300T had gotten a working port of Archlinux which means that it also gets X server running on it. It would be really cool to have the option of both distros by the time Ubuntu Phone OS starts getting ported to devices.
I need some feedback from my MyTouch 4G Slide community:
My MT4GS just broke two days ago. I have no in-call sound unless I'm on speaker phone or bluetooth. I guess my earpiece speaker is broken.
Anyway, I'm going to see my buddy at T-mobile on Friday. I've been looking at the Nexus 4 and on paper it looks amazing and I'm sure I'd be happy with it...except for that keyboard issue. I've been trying to use my slide without the keyboard for a couple days now and I really hate it. Things I hadn't even thought of before started popping up like not even being able to see the darn keyboard outside because of glare. I don't have that issuse with my slide out.
Anyway, I said before that I'd skip the Samsung Relay for a future keyboard device but now my back is up against the wall and I need a decision by Friday. Go for the Nexus 4 in all it's technological glory or get the Samsung Relay so I'm still in my comfort zone and a happy texter?
Does the Relay even have a dedicated XDA Forum? I searched but only found some stuff in miscellaneous.

The reason typing on the touchscreen sucks on the MT4GS is because the screen is kind of hilariously small. I went from the MT4GS -> Nexus S -> MT4GS and typing on the Nexus S is so much easier because the screen is larger.
The Relay does not have a dedicated forum but a very large development thread in misc development. I think it's a pretty decent phone. The keyboard is nice, CM10.1 is chugging along decently, and the hardware is similar to the S3. The sliding mechanism is kind of terrible though and I think that would be the first thing to fail on the phone.
Nexus 4 is pretty cool. I'd take a look at the Note 2 also unless you think it's too large and wear pants with no pockets or something.

Thanks for the input. I am leaning towards the Nexus 4 for many obvious reasons but I'm already getting separation anxiety from my keyboard and that 5 row qwerty is sweet on the Relay. I feel like a kid trying to give up his binky lol.

I got the nexus 4 for my girl and she absolutley loves it and it is bar far the best phone out there... for her. I play with it a lot and like it much but doubt I could ever use it daily, I'm I need of a keyboard, been hooked for years and haven't found anything to move me away... if it were me go relay as you sound like you have similar needs/wants
Sent from my SGH-T839 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah it's funny, I've been going back and forth all day about it weighing the pros and cons and it's ashame but my need for a keyboard might hold me back from getting that awesome Nexus 4. I also find myself using wifi calling to stay connected in a dead zone at work so that's another selling point.. I told myself i'd never go backwards in specs and that 5 mp camera is certainly a step backwards but I may end up taking the hit on that front to stay in my comfort zone. I do miss the dedicated number row from the G1 days too so that will be nice. If I'm forced to get a touch phone on my next purchase when physical keys are in the past, then so be it. I have two more days though and who knows, I might change my mind again and get the Nexus 4. The good news is that I think the Relay is free after rebate so I won't lose anything if I go that route and I could always buy the Nexus outright if I'm unhappy. Thanks for letting me bounce my thoughts here guys.
