Downloaded updates vs OTA? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any downside to manually updating via the file on Google's site vs getting the OTA updates?
Is there no difference at all? Does it make more sense to wait for the OTA?

None at all. It is the exact same patch being applied both ways.

[Q] Trouble Getting 3.1 Update

I go into system update, but I can't click Check Update and it says
"There is an update for your device. Please check notifications."
Problem is, I have no notifications. Any ideas?
In the same boat as well.
I keep getting update for the same 8.2.3.9 firmware ):
I don't really want to install the leak because the update is out but I can't seem to get the notification

[Q] Will rooted/flashed/ROM'd devices receive the new ICS update over the air?

Hey guys
My Nexus S is currently flashed with [CM7.1.0.1-N229] -=Nexus MV 10.19B=- |Fast&Stable|Ezekeel's Mod|Matr1x 9.0|
With the announcement by Google advising that all Nexus S devices will receive the ICS update, is there anything I need to do to my phone to receive this firmware update?
Do I need to restore back to default ROM etc, or can I leave as is?
Thanks for your help
Quentin
You won't receive the OTA, you need to be running stock for that.
Changes are that once the source is released someone will create an AOSP ROM faster than the OTA will reach you, so you could just flash that?
Greetz
don't worry
CM7 and other group will have ICS based-on ROM
so , only thing you may worry is how long you gonna wait
beside , you always can flash ICS stock ROM if you don't wanna wait anymore , don't you think ?
anyone have any idea on when the ICS update will come to NS4G?

what if my phone is rooted then i have backup of my stock rom. does my stock rom receives ota update? what do you think so?
You should receive an OTA if you restore the stock image and one is available.
Would you need the stock recovery if you do receive the ota?

Rooting is required to Install ICS..?
Hi.
Can I install ICS without rooting my phone...? My phone is unlocked...
Thanks
You will NOT receive an OTA update unless you're running Android on a stock unrooted device. The only way you will run Ice Cream Sandwich is if you find an ICS ROM but most of them are in alpha stages, meaning not suitable for daily use.

You'll receive the OTA on a stock rooted rom as well, just like every other OTA.

Unlikely. Most OTAs do not do an assert on recovery and flash without any issue with CWM. If you've modified anything it does assert though it will fail.

It won't install though so you still won't be able to OTA ICS.

A few weeks after the release of the Galaxy Nexus.

Why wouldn't it? Every other OTA has had no problem installing through CWM on a rooted stock system. Unless this OTA decides to assert recovery for some reason (the only reason it would fail as it would then be trying to patch recovery).

Quick question about android version.

Hey all I just have a quick question about the android version on my nexus.
I have only bought the phone today and under version it says 2.3.1
I have tried to update with the ota option as there must be a newer version out there but it says I am upto date?
Its a GSM UK handset.

It might take a while for the phone to receive an OTA notification. It should come soon.
Transmitted from somewhere in space... from my Nexus S... and Tapatalk.
Thanks for the reply,
Should there not be an option for me to manually check and then it get downloaded rather than waiting for an ota notification. 2.3.1 seems very old compared to the latest version now.

in dialer , type
Code:
*#*#2432546#*#*
You can, of course, update manually (without root/unlocked BL) with the files from this sticky. Just make sure you choose the correct version number.

System upgrades

I'm pretty new but I wanna know how can we upgrade to 4.4.3 if we are rooted? Obviously OTA is out of the question

Well there's a few ways. You can go back to comepletely stock and accept the OTA or wait until someone puts out a 4.4.3 build.

They haven't even released 4.4.3 for our device yet, have they?

Not able to update my nexus 5 to KitKat 4.4.4 using OTA

I saw on the Internet that KitKat 4.4.4 with security bug fixes has been launched only for nexus 5 through OTA but when I check for updates, the phone says your system is up to date. I'm running stock android 4.4.3 unrooted. Why is this happening? Any help regarding this?
P.S. - I don't want to update using factory images. Only using OTA. Want to know why my phone is unable to get the update.
Thank you

They roll out in stages. You'll have to be patient or check out the ota help in the general forum and download the ota zip

Floating around here are stock 4.4.4 zips you can flash.

Don't worry. I've not received it either. Google sucks with updates and gives absolutely no change log or support. Apple walks all over them in this area. I've read it may take two to three weeks for everyone to get it.

and thats why on update day at apple it takes 12+ hrs for the update to download because their servers are hammered.
pick your poison.
I'd definitely take the staged rollout. No question. Then again, I never wait for an ota. There are plenty of other options available if you're not patient enough to wait. Even waiting for the ota, you'll still get the update before most other devices. Some won't get it at all. Wait, or go a different route. Simple.

I don't understand why people who are so desperate for the update don't just install a custom recovery and flash the zip.
Or just adb sideload like a savage.
