[Q] Unlocked Captivate can't see/register on Bell network - Captivate General

I just acquired an unlocked AT&T Captivate.
When I put my Bell Canada sim in I can not see/register/connect to the the Bell Network.
If I put my wife's Roger's sim it connects right away and when I enter the Rogers APN info it connects fine to the 3G network.
With the Bell sim in there I cannot even get to the menu for automatically or manually selecting the network as the meni option is grayed out/unselectable.
Any ideas? Are there other Bell Captivate users out there?
edit: with the Rogers sim in there and if I manually search for a network it list Rogers and a 302610 network which suspect is the Bell network as the MCC is 302 and MNC 610 for Bell

maybe video? i wanna see it
is the sim itself ok?

My cap runs fine on bell... I have the network selection part greyed out too but it picks up signal as soon as the sim is in place
Sent from my X10i using XDA App

I am assuming the SIM is fine. It works in an unlocked Telus Hero and an unlocked Rogers Magic. What video would be helpful? Of the settings screen or the no signal icon in my notification bar?
I get no errors or warnings with my Bell sim in there. It just won't find the network.
(and thanks for confirming that there is at least one other cap working on Bell)
My plan is to get Froyo on here anyway. Is changing the ROM or Kernal likely to impact this issue at all?

which band does bell use? which modem you use? (euro or us?)

Bell uses 850 & 1900 - my understanding is that they are same as the Rogers frequencies.
I am assuming I am using a US modem. How do I check the modem? The phone is an AT&T phone that did arrive in my hands rooted and unlocked already so I suppose something else could have been done to it.

more details:
Baseband version: I897UCJH7
Kernel version: 2.6.29 [email protected] #2
build number: ECLAIR.UCJH7

Anyone? I've tried different modems and ROMs including the Bell i9000 modem/rom for the Captivate. Its almost like my sim is bad but I know it works in my htc magic.

well in case some one else has this problem it was the SIM. Apparently there is a problem with a batch of Bell SIMs - they had me swap to a new SIM and I connected immediately.
Woo Hoo!

Changing the CDMA Radio

I just got off the phone with Telus and what they told me is that they are releasing ANOTHER TP2 on the GSM network and that I would have to buy another phone TP2 just to get onto the GSM network.
This being said, is there any way to modify the radio signal in my CDMA phone to read both CDMA and GSM, or atleast get more speed out of my phone for connectivity to the net?
*update
I just got off the phone with HTC and the lady I spoke with told me, that to change the radio frequency I just had to change the ROM. That being said IF, I put a Telus HSPA ROM on there the phone should be capable of working on the network. Now that being said. If this is possible would it not be possible to run on both networks, CDMA and HSPA, making the signal control software dependent, meaning I have CDMA controls for standard phone calls and HSPA for running the highspeed network?
Update in previous post.
Eazy, just HardSPL and security unlock your radio bro...Only then you can use the GSM networks in your country (I'm guessing it's US)
But you can only activate one at a time. Either GSM only or CDMA only..CMIIW..
Just my 2 cents
Actually it's Canada
Right but if I unlock the phone, and switch it back and forth on and off the networks, how would that affect my account, could I hide the fact i was doing this?

I have this phone on Telus...I got it unlocked and I put my work sim card in this phone and it's on rogers. I switch networks when necessary....If you get a Telus sim card you would be able to use it GSM.
You should be able to pick which network you use. I saw it in phone settings, I think.

TELUS does not provide GSM at all. They are CDMA and UMTS.
So does this mean its possible. If i have a CDMA Sprint HTC Touch pro 2. That i have the potential of using it on At&t in the US?? All i have to do is unlock it?? Any information would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks!!
And if one does unlock a radio on said Telus phone, can one use both radio frequencies, thus enabling both CDMA and HSPA frequencies?

So Telus new 3G network is not GSM? It does have drop down menu showing "Send SMS over" GMS and CDMA. GSM is selected by default.

[Q] Does Nexus S work in Canada on Fido network?

I was using my nexus s on Rogers network, and I thought, that since Fido is basically the same company as Rogers and Nexus S is an unlocked phone, my nexus s should have no problem working on Fido's network, and all I have to do is changing the SIM card.
The truth turned out to be, my nexus s, with a Fido SIM card inside, is ROAMing on Rogers network! I cannot see any carrier but Rogers if I go into the "network search" menu! Even if I checked the "only use 2g network" option!
I live in Montreal and I should have perfect Fido reception. My guess is that my nexus s may be secretly locked to Rogers network, and no matter what SIM card I put in it always, and only, finds Rogers network and connects to it, making the service become roaming if i use SIM card from other local carrier.
Is there any nexus s using Fido's network properly in Canada? or specifically in Montreal area?
Has anyone found a problem like this when doing a network switch?
it will work only as Voice
data will be EDGE only
Its currently asw 1700 / "t-mobile" only' therefore wind or mobilicity will get 3G.
Rogers Fido Bell & Telus use HSPA 850 1900 will not.
Is your phone *really* roaming on Rogers?
Fido is owned by Rogers, and as far as I know, they share the same network.
It could be that your Nexus S is just not displaying the network name "FIDO" and is displaying Rogers instead.
Wind Mobile, for instance, displays their network number on the Nexus S, but if you put the same chip on a Blackberry it will either show "Wind Home" or "Wind Away".

Yes. My Nexus S works fine with rogers. If I switch to a Fiso SIM card, it literally ROAMs on rogers network with a little "R" on top of the signal bar and ONLY finds rogers network in the "wireless" menu.
This is so weird.

It finds Rogers network and connects to it in EDGE. Even Fido and rogers use the same network/frequency/towers, it just can't see any network but Rogers.
Are your phones working well with Fido?

it doesn't matter, it still is on FIDO
i had an old Treo phones that did the exact same thing, because FIDO is not considered a real network in Canada as it's owned by ROGERS, so most of the time they get grouped together
but if you see their tower ID, you'll see they are on the correct tower
but it is a very tedious process to do that
regardless you will not get billed roaming as fido=rogers=fido=rogers=one company with 2 faces
My friend and I are both on Fido. We have older basic phones. I am on a basic plan. He is on older CityFido plan. Neither of us have data plan, voice only. His phone shows Rogers. Mine shows Fido (perhaps due to my SIM).
When I look at available networks in my phone, I only see Rogers. Fido no longer exists as a network. It is merely a cosmetic sub-brand of Rogers.
Fido and Rogers merged networks years ago; there is only one network: Rogers.
I hope this helps.

Q: Nexus S Fido Canada Roaming Icon?

So I bought a Samsung Google Nexus S i9020A 850/1900 3G Unlocked from a US Vendor and I put my FIDO simcard in and everything is fine, but I'm seeing the roaming icon, although I am clearly on Fido and in Canada. For 3G to work, I had to turn "International Data Roaming" ON.
Now to the question: Will I be charged for roaming (data and/or voice) by FIDO?
Thanks,
A
yes the stock ROM has outdated Canadian company GSM info
you don't get charged Roaming unless you exit your regular service area
Fido = Rogers

thanks. will flashing CM's ROM fix this? or should I be flashing a newer radio?
it was the same problem for Windmobiles
it was only showing the network number instead of the name
the latest 2.3.3 patch fixed it for me
I'm hearing reports of this for NS models bought in Canada and used on a different carrier. I don't known an NS but I'd be useful to know what to tell people is the solution.
Radio UKCD1 has the correct carrier info and gets rid of the roaming icon. This was the radio that either came with my phone purchased from FIDO, or was updated when I installed 2.3.4.
I'm personally using XXKB3 as it gives me a way noticeable difference in signal strength here in Winnipeg. I'll live with the roaming icon for now.

[Q] Rodgers to Wind

This may seem a dumb question but here it goes anyways. I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus S that was on Rodgers with the following info:
V. 4.1.2 ......i9020AUCKF1......Build JZ054K. When i insert my Mobilicity sim card, it doesnt connect to their network. The sim works fine on other phone. Is there a way to flash or change some setting on the phone to make it connect. Thanks very kindly.

Rogers Nexus S does not support Wind/Mobi frequency (1700 AWS on HSPA). Model i9020A is what rogers carries whereas i9020T is the model compatible with Wind/Mobilicity.
p.s. it's spelled Rogers not Rodgers; no idea how someone mispels that when the brand is basically everywhere in Canada.
Cheers.
They are different frequencies and won't support eachother.
Rogers phone's won't work with Mobilicity/Wind sims, and wind/mobilicity sim cards will only work on rogers' 2g network (no data).
This applies even if the phones are unlocked. Only way a rogers phone can work on mobilicity is if it's a penta band factory unlocked phone, but the Nexus S isn't. Some Galaxy Nexus are but you have to confirm before buying.
You should now resell the phone and buy one that's originally from Wind/Mobilicity and make sure it's unlocked. Then it will work.

Samsung Galaxy S i9000 on Telus 4G LTE SIM?

I picked up a used Samsung Galaxy S i9000 that was on Virgin (CDMA?). I rooted it, and put JB on it. From another device, I have a Telus data plan that is on 4G. Looking at the i9000 specs, it says it supports GSM and 3G. This where I get confused. The Telus plan I am on is 4G LTE (data). Does this mean that this Sim could fall back to 3G if I use it in my Samsung? I have ran a number of unlock tools (including the Samsung Galaxy S Unlocker) and think that my phone is unlocked, but the radio shows that there is no connection. When I ran the unlocker, it completes but does not say "its done". I can see that I now have the correct APN setting for Telus. The phone sees my SIM and my phone #. And I have the nv_data.bin file ( was not there before running the unlocker). When I look at the phone details, it sees my SIM, knows my phone number etc. It just won't connect. It also has the correct APN settings. If I try to dial a number or use the data, it does not work. Wondering if there are other settings I am missing?
I think the issue is that the sim only runs on Telus 4G and does not fall back to 3G (what the phone is capable of), but again, this is where I am green. I don't know how this works. Does the phone 'ask' the Sim to fall back, or does the network and Sim dictate to the phone what network it will use?
Area of coverage: Burlington Ontario (GTA). Sorry if this has been discussed, but my search terms did not find anything.
Wrong forum, Samsung S i9000 does not equal Samsung Galaxy S 4G (aka T959V or T959W).
My bad. Sorry about that.
