Hi,
I'm writing to clear myself a doubt abut the Windows Mobile 6.1 registry.
Since I've messed around too much with the Windows registry, I'd like to reset my device to be sure that any registry tweak I made (added, modified and deleted keys) is wiped out, restored or added back to factory defaults.
How can I achieve this?
Should I reset Profile Info from within Windows, make a Soft Reset or am I forced to do a Hard Reset?
Thank you for your help!
You should make a HARD-RESET.
* hard-reset will delete all your data, if it's necessary do a backup before making a hard reset.

I have a fairly new Touch Cruise and today messaging doesn't work anymore. I can't send any sms, email or mms - I can't even access the messaging section. I also can't recieve sms.
What can I do?
Soft reset, and if it doesn't work... Hard Reset....
Soft reset doesn't work . . . and I would rather not hard reset - hate to loose all my data. Isn't there any other way to solve the problem?

There's nothing on your PDA that can't be backed up/copied/restored in minutes...
It appears that part of the Windows Mobile operating system has some how corrupted, could of been a crash or just pot bad luck, from past experience I would reccomend that you download a program called PimBackup, it is completely free and this will allow you to make a backup of all the data on your phone including Text Messages, emails etc on to your microSD card. After that perform a hard reset, reinstall PimBackup and restor your data file.
Good luck.
i have had the same problem on my old tytn with his original WM5 .
I tried install tomtom5 and after that messaging was not working anymore , tryng start 'message' freeze the device , corrupted wm5 files i thought.
No lucky with hard reset .
I solved first using a thirdy part messaging software (try search on internet ) and then , when it was available , flashing WM6 . The new os with his necessary files solved completely the problem. If this is your case ( corrupted os files ) you can consider to flash a new WM6.1 or an original shipped rom to your device in order to restore al files.
I went to \\\registry\HKLM: and was scrolling when i accidently renamed one of the folders to "d"....now my tp freezes. i can launch total commander but not do much else. can someone take a look and let me know what to rename the folder?
inside this folder, there's subdirectory with:
-htc
-ia stytle
-l&h
-microsoft
-midi engine
-scansoft
The remaining folders under \\\registry\HMLM\:
Audiocompression
buttonapps
comm
controlpanel
d [what's the name of this directory?]
drivers
dirvers32
explorer
extmodems
hardware
ident
init
loader
mui
nls
platform
security
services
snd
software
system
tapi
telephony

windows ce ser
windows ce tools
The only thing I have that you don't is WindowsLiveBak
tried that but didn't work. any one else? at this point, i've tried to hard reset but even that doesn't work.

Hard Reset has to work...Cuz it restores default everything.
Hi Webazoid, I just checked and there is no other folder starting with "d" except the ones you mention.
Just hard reset to restore the original ROM.
Good luck.

he renamed the folder to d so it could start with anything.
to help him out go through your hklm registry and see what folder you have that he doesn't. and it should have the contents of what he initially posted.

you probably attempted to hard reset by going to clear storage in settings right?
if so hold down the volume down and center button, then press the stylus in the soft reset hole. Keep holding down volume down and center until it comes up with a message on your screen saying its gonna clear all data yada yada and there you go.
IF that doesnt work.. i guess re-flash the rom.
i just hard resetted. works fine now. lost all settings though.
Too late, but it was the Software folder, based on the content you list.
I know you already have a Software folder but it was probably recreated empty by some program.
I made a bad change in shellres.dll.0409.mui and my device (Herald) cannot boot normally. It is frozen on the Windows welcome page (WM6.0).
So, Activesync cannot detect the device.
I would like to copy the good file from my computer to the device, or to copy the good file which is still installed on my device in \Temp, to \windows.
Is it possible to do that with mtty, with the bootloader mode, or with another tool ?
I'm afraid that a hard reset is not useful because shellres.dll.0409.mui is a "ROM file" (ROM property checked, is it considered as the ROM component ?).
And I don't want to flash ou upgrade the ROM. It is Ok except shellres.
Thanks for your help !
You don't need to flash again the rom. I had this problem a lot of times and with a hard reset solved. This file makes the translation for the main wm applications, so if its wrong the applications fail to start, and for this you cannot achive an activesync connection. But with a hard reset the device returns to factory settins and all windows files replaced with the defaults, so you can boot it again normally.
Possible without a hard reset ?
... because I didn't have a backup. So, I would prefer another solution.
Other question : when a file is marked as "ROM" in the properties, does that mean this is a real part of the ROM ? Or is the ROM stored elsewhere ?
Rom is "read only image like a cd rom. you can't change one file on the cd rom without rewriting the entire cd. When you flash a rom you are rewriting that cd.
In other words the actual "rom" is stored elsewhere and reloaded when you hardreset.
Would WM5torage be of any use?
no his phone won't load so therefore he can't install anything.
plus i don't think wm5torage is compatible with 6 or 6.1 (it may have been that it was just 6.1 ....i've seen people complaining about it, i may be wrong)
I made the hard reset but I have to do again everything...
... and I can't change the read-only property of shellres.dll.0409.mui.
I'm creating a new question...
I am using Touch HD (BlackStone), I installed one of the hot fix from HTC and it seems causing my phone lock up with the ICR program. I did hard reset and reinstall the ICR and it still crashing all the time. I spended 2 days playing around with countless hard reset and the problem was still there. Finally I flashed my ROM and the problem seem gone now. Seems like the hot fix replaced some of the system files and the hard reset didn't restored them.
I just wondering what exactly hard reset does? Does it just delete the extra files and settings installed by users without restoring all the system files?
a hard reset restore all files of your phone (delete all contacts, messages, settings, programs....) to original parameters.
It's like a "fomat c:" for a computer !
So when I flash the ROM image into the phone, it will put it in a protected area in the flash ROM and hard reset will copy all the files from there to another portion of the flash ROM and execute from there?
when you flash a rom, it erase (or replace, it's the same) the 'older' rom !
a hard reset just delete all files ! if you hard reset your phone, it will be like you buy it, when you power on your phone at the first time !
there is no multi-partitions, one and only one OS can be flash, install and run at the same time !
I hope it's clear, and I answer your question, because my english is very bad....
Hey, if you try format c: ,you get rid of ALL datas on your disk, including OS !! So, it´s not like hard-reset Hard-reseting deletes all user-made data, but it doesn´t do anything with ROM/firmware files, so if you changed them, you can get them back only by reinstalling OS ;-)

Ah that explain why hard reset didn't fix my problems but re-flash the same ROM into phone did.
So there is a list of files in ROM to tell the hard reset program which are needed to keep?
thanks
sorry, it's to hard for me to explain what I think in english
I've always used SKtools (only) to remove installed apps with the previous windows phones. Is it adviced to use SKtools with HD2 too?

Hello,
what experience do you have with SKTools-backup after a
HardReset or ROM-Update?
I updated my O2-ROM from 1.48 to 1.72. Then I tried a backup
with SKTools, but my HD2 stopped working.
I could not switch it off, so I had problems to do a new HardReset.
After I managed this, I tried to backup the pim data.
But no success. Now I'm unconfused about the backup tool.
I understand that a ROM-update is a complex thing
(also 1.48 is not much different from 1.72).
But I expect as a minimum that I can backup the pim data.
My final question is, can I expect from SKTools a (more or less)
full backup after a HardReset.
Thanks

You are doing backup, right? Why should there be any problem?
OK, I never do any backup after a hard reset. I have done uncountably many SKTool backups, and have done a handful of SKTools restore after hard resets (fortunately not on HD2).
Why do you need to do a backup after a hard reset? If you want to go back to that status, you just hard reset again.
Move installed software.. not all possible??
Can anybody of you tell me, how I could move progs from internal storage to storage card, that do not have this option in SKTools?
Mostly this is regarding games that do not have the option to chose where to install to. They only have the option to deeply check intallation.
Is there another way to move istalled software/games than with SKTools??
Thanks for any Hint.
No help for me..?
FWIW, eshd's scenario happens to my Imagio. I recently got a refurbished unit from Verizon to replace my old Imagio (broken send key), and I used the complete backup and restore process with SKTools. Both the backup file and SKTools were on my storage card, so I just swapped the card into the new unit.
After programming the new unit over the air, I started SKTools and pointed it to the 160MB full backup. The unit automatically soft reset itself, and SKTools appeared to begin the restore process (progress screen with countdown of files transferred).
Once all the files transferred, however, the unit soft reset again and hung on the HTC logo screen. I tried this twice, and both times got the same result (I waited 20 minutes on the second time). I plan to try Sprite Backup next, as I just do not relish the idea of manually restoring all my settings to the new phone!

No, or (perhaps) not always!
After a HardReset I had no success with a backup with SKTools.
