I saw on some forum that the Fuze has GPS and can map my location. I saw the Quick GPS program, but it only seems to download latest location data.
Also, is there any way to move the icons in Programs so I can put the ones I use most near the top?
As always, thanks.
You want to use Google Maps and select "Use GPS"
As for your question in regards to Programs, AFAIK, nope but I always thought that would be convenient.
you can also run tomtom on your touch pro
Hey I just got my Fuze from ATT and I just had a few questions about it.
What are the differences between the Fuze and the Touch Pro? I specifically remembered reading about a VGA front camera and a Youtube client in the GSM review. I was really looking forward to the youtube client but since it's nonexistent, how do you guys watch youtube videos and just videos in general online? I've tried and it does not work. the only thing that works is Cingular Video. And what about the radio? I thought it was going to be an FM radio, not XM radio.
I also want to unlock my FUZE so I can use it in Hong Kong (vacation). Is that the same as "flashing" or something completely different? If I unlock, can I change it back later on?
Thanks.
1. No front camera for video call as you know.
2. If you're on att ROM, "youtube" is still there; just create a shortcut in Windows\Start Menu\Programs OR you may want to flash some customized ROMs e.g RRE's ROM.
3. FM radio: install a FM radio cab file or flash a custom ROM.
4. Unlock: call att rep and ask for subsidy unlock code. Unlock means you can put any SIM card from any carrier into the phone and start making/receiving call w/o paying the int'l roaming charge.
Here is the good place to get more about your phone http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Raphael
Have fun.
how do you create a shortcut to youtube?
For unlocking, ATT said they only let you do it after 90 days. I'm leaving this December so it's going to be too late by then. That's why I have to unlock it myself. So far it seems like the only way to get it unlocked is by paying someone but i'm just worried about getting ripped off or something.
The mskip thread on flashing says that it's possible to break your phone if you allow the screensaver to activate. Does he mean allowing the phone to turn off the screen? Does he mean to not allow the screen to turn off? Also, what's hardspl mean?
Lastly, I'm using a Macbook. Is it still possible to unlock and flash my phone with a Mac? Thanks.
Oh forgot to ask about this too: What about the GPS? How do you get it to work on ATT? I know I have a free trial for a month so I thought I'd give it a try. I installed the navigator but it gave me a website asking for a login and pw. btw, is it possible to get GPS without paying for it or do you have to have a subscription?
Navigation
Hey i have never used that att navigator if you want a free one.. google nav4all its pretty good and you can get maps for most any country so check it out
Is it a free trial? Do you eventually have to pay?

I use amazegps.com. It's permanently free (ad-supported); Nav4All will eventually start charging, AIUI. The amazegps Windows Mobile version is still in beta and has just released a new version, so there are still a couple of bugs and issues; in particular, the "search" function is switching to a new information provider in the U.S. and so the "local search" function isn't working at the moment. The navigation features work really well, though, with voice prompts and moving 3D maps, etc.
The GPS receiver in the Fuze is a bit finicky. The best advice, AFAICT, is to:
1) Turn off Assisted GPS (Start->Settings->System->AGPS Settings).
2) Set the GPS program port to COM4 (Start->Settings->System->External GPS).
3) Use QuickGPS at least once a week.
4) Download GPSTest, set it to COM4, and run it to start up the GPS unit before running a navigation program. (This is only needed if it's been more than a couple of hours since you last used the GPS; hot start is acceptably fast, but warm starts -- using the QuickGPS download -- can take several minutes, and it's better to use GPSTest to watch what's going on than to listen to your navigation system complaining about not being able to find the satellites.)

Using File Explorer (in Programs->Tools, as I recall), navigate to \Windows and scroll down close to the bottom of the list. You'll see a couple of executable files named "YouTube". Tap-and-hold on the larger one and tap on "Copy" from the pop-up menu. Then navigate to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs and pick Edit->Paste Shortcut from the lower-right Menu button.
i found the youtube.exe file but when i go to programs to paste it, there's no edit button.
Hold your stylus down until the menu appears, there you will see the Paste Shortut option. I also like to us GSfinder instead of the file explorer that comes with it.
http://page.freett.com/todamitsu/GSFinderE.htm
i just tried holding down on the stylus but no menu pops up but it didn't
work. the youtube client works but i can't move it. it's start - programs - then paste right?
Btw, are you guys all using PCs to add these new programs onto your phone? If I have a Mac, then is it still possible?
and for the weather, right now I'm in Ithaca but I guess it wasn't important enough to be in the weather app. Is there a way to put in Ithaca? Thanks.
GPS on Raphael (aka FUZE, Touch PRO) takes looooong time to get a fix vs. Tilt (6 min vs. under 3 min) and not to mention about lagging, too. I'm on Tomtom 7 in USA and Garmin XT elsewhere. With those applications you don't have to have internet access on the go.
Create a shortcut, I normally use "Resco File Explorer". Browse to the exe file which you want to have a shortcut, tap and hold the stylus, then choose "send to" then "Start Menu as Shortcut" Trial version does the job, in case you don't want to shell out some money.
Worldmate standard version (now free) does have weather in which you can put your zipcode. Want to use in Manila Weather? Search for "Weather Database Editor"
If you don't have a PC, buy one then Just kidding! You can use cab file to install application.
Thanks Nghiem.
Hm, so I can't use the file explorer that came with the phone?
What is a cab file and how do you use it? Is it related to those "tweaks"? Do you have to flash your phone before you can use these things? And what's the hardspl?
On games, how do you guys get them? I used to have a Sony Ericsson w810 and I was able to download and install java games for free. Is it possible to do the same with the Fuze? I want to play Brain Challenge 2 lol (the demo was fun).
I thought a new thread would be useful because the other satnav threads are interspersed with different software solutions and I know quite a few people are anxious to get a working satnav solution on their Diamond 2.
I've dumped Tomtom for various reasons that I won't go into here so now I am trying new solutions and Navigon seem to be a real contender. If you have been looking into Navigon you will no doubt have stumbled upon the Touch HD thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446487 with the 3 hacked files to make it work on the Diamond 2's wvga screen.
I am working on the premise that the hacked files do not impinge on Navigon's profits and I am happy to use them until Navigon make an official wvga version. I am using the 30 day try before you buy version and intend to buy the full version if I am happy with the software.
I downloaded the trial software from their UK site and chose the ~400MB UK only maps. The software version that I was served up was 7.3.1 build 137 and, as expected, did not work at all on my D2. I assumed that the trial download would be the latest available and another thread stated that the latest was 7.3.2 and that only one hacked file was needed. I tried that single file and the program would not start. I didn't know what version I had at that point because the app wouldn't start. Therefore, I copied the three hacked files into the relevant places in the navigon folder and, hey presto, it worked.
It didn't find the in-built gps receiver straight away and I can't remember exactly what I did but I mucked about with the gps settings and had it working in a minute or two. It obtained a satellite lock indoors within about 30 seconds. Very impressive so far!
I installed the "Navigon Fresh" software on my PC and it immediately updated itself to a more recent version. It found my Navigon installation on the D2 when I connected it in diskdrive mode via USB. I tried to search for a more uptodate software version but whatever I did Fresh stated that I had an "invalid device definition" and wouldn't do anything. So I continued with the version I had.
The settings and preferences seem a bit convoluted compared to tomtom navigator, they seem a bit spread around rather than being all in one place. I guess you can soon get used to that. gps updates are quick, I would say at least two screen updates per second and navigation is easy to follow when in the car. I can't find a zoom function in 3D mode and I find the default a bit too zoomed-out i.e. it shows your route for about a mile in front of you - I'd prefer just a few hundred yards.
The screen is a bit stretched but not sop much that it is noticeable, the speed signs are oval rather than round but the whole of the screen is used up and it is all quite readable. The road names are a bit too small to read when driving but the directions and speed readout etc are all just fine. The voice navigation is excellent! The directions are very clear and precise for instance the lady says something like "in three hundred metres take the second exit on the roundabout onto Manchester Road." She sounds really quite human and not robot-like at all. One thing I don't like though is that it sometimes tells you turn left for a right turn off a roundabout.
I don't know about the full version but the trial version MUST have a working internet connection to start up so that it can check its validity. Therefore, no network connection = no navigation. This could be a real problem. All in all, so far, I am quite impressed with it.
Sorry for the rambling post but I hope this will be useful for someone who is looking for a D2 satnav solution.

The full version doesn't need an internet connection to navigate, once it is activated.
I've been using Navigon for a week. Good alternative to TomTom. The only thing I don't like is that perspective on 3D view is too low (no point in having the car icon in the middle of the screen, instead of having it at the bottom)

It's normal, right after installation, the GPS is not found but your offered the choice of configuring it manually or use the GPS Assistant. Just start the assistant, click no, no and okay and the GPS is there ...

Can't help you on this one, sorry.
But I'm amazed by everyone getting Navigon to run. Would you mind explaining step by step how you did and also what verison you're running? I tried 7.3.1 and I see the splash screen and then the program shuts down. Feel free to PM me if that's easier.
Can someone explain how to install igo to work on TD2? I have ver. 8, which is a year old, and it doesn't work.

how do u rotate? using Reg edits? try changescreen to rotate, MN7 will work fine in Landscape mode.
or if u dont want to use any additional programs to rotate, try launching MN7 from FileExplorer, not from startmenu..

Its much more easier to use g-Config than to add those pesky registry settings.
However. Navigon rotates now on my device but it does not rescale correct....
so it does rotate the screen but then its just a 480 * 800 rotates so i see only 480 * 480....
This is not really what i want i want it to be like TomTom. TomTom flawlessly rotates the screen for me....

I've found only the Try & Buy Europe but I'm shure, others will follow ...
Downloadlink from Mobile2Day
Have also just downloaded and installed the try & buy version of Navigon 7. Only problem is that I can't see the maps on the screen. All installed to SD card. Downloaded the maps to go with it (Q2_2009 Europe) and placed them in the "Maps" folder in Navigon.
When I start the prog, get all the guff about it being a trial version and having 30 days to try it. It picks up 7 to 9 sat signals in no time at all and tells me exactly where I am. But the screen is totally white where a map should be.
Any idea where I am going wrong? This looks like being a great software packet and if I can get it going I will more than happily buy it.

I think this can happen in case of missing MapDrawer.nfs file (or improper version). This file should be in the \map subdirectory.
OK..... don't seem to have that file. Without the map files themselves, that directory is empty.
Thanks nunein

Beside of these files (and the map files) there should be 6 other files (*.nfs and *.psf) and the "Landmarks" directory incl. the file "Landmarks_EU.nfs".
So I guess something went wrong with the sw installation.
Once again, nunein, thanks very much for your help. Added the MapDrawer.nfs to the "Maps" directory and suddenly I can see the map. Used it this morning to get to work (I know the way really!!), and it was brilliant. Think I will have to splash out the 99€ for the activation.

Hello xda-developers
I was wonder why there isn't a better GPS navigation software for Windows Mobile cellphones (more preferably a newer one like the HTC Touch Pro)?
There is Google Maps which is fantastic but it has two shortcomings:
1. Doesn't have any sort of voice guidance
2. Doesn't reroute when you get off your path.
I've also found Google Navigator but after installing the trial version I found it to be very buggy and hasn't been updated for a few months now. Also costs $60! For that cost I can just go ahead an buy a dedicated GPS for about $40 more.
So I ask: Is there anything better in the works? Possibly an open(!) source project? Or a better presented and cheaper solution?
the best navigation software aren't free.. but there are workarounds obviously
try tomtom, or igo i love them
or try nav4all... free until 2010 and turn by turn voice direction
Hm Navi4all didn't seem to want to get any GPS sats, also seemed slow.
Nav N Go (IGo?) seems to be a european only product?
Tomtom looks like it might be worth its salt though
IGo is not European only...there is a North America version.... I love IGo after being turned on to it by a friend of mine (who also helped me with my first flash ---- props to Kareem9NBA).... text to voice, easy interface.
Before that, I used INav which I loved.....
I personally love tomtom. and its free if you know where to find it.
I'd go for Igo. I am from Europe and it has really good data even in eastern european countries, but TomTom is really good too. I think you should compare these two and just use the one that's faster/better for you.
Remember, we have PHONES that have GPS and you can't expect them to work like a GPS-only device. It's the same with the camera - no camera-phone performs as well as a standard digital camera (not even mentioning SLRs) and no GPS enabled phone will ever work as well as a GPS-only device. Correct me if I'm wrong.
...
I dunno....Garmin Mobile XT works pretty damn well on my fuze. My friend has a dedicated garmin and mine can do more than his can cause our phones have internet access.
And with the update to Garmin from their website, the POI database is just about never out of date - it includes a Google Search function to look up points of interest.
navigon ( http://www.navigon.com/site/de/de/products/navigation_software/windowsmobile_pda )
is excelent like tomtom - you have the possibility to check before you buy it (30 days)
+1 for Igo8 (from the company Nav N Go). European company, but when you use NavTeq's USA maps, works perfect.
Advantages are real TTS (Text to Speech) (i.e., speaks actual street names), 3D buildings in major cities, ability to add POI databases, logos show onscreen for POIs, etc.
A dedicated GPS does work a bit better. But how often do you have that in your pocket when you need it on the spur of the moment???
Depends on what works best for your phone really. Some programs will lag on one persons phone and then not lag at all on anothers....from what I've read around the forum anyway. I've tried a lot of GPS software and I can tell you that...
Garmin Mobile XT has a great UI and excellent maps. Very easy to use and works. Only problem is GPS lag (shows me about 200ft behind my actual position).
TomTom works great. I don't think the UI is anywhere nearly as nice as Garmin's or as user-friendly. But I hardly get any GPS lag using TomTom and if you can keep the maps updated then you should be just fine. This is what I use now.
I've tried IGO8 and Amigo. Amigo wouldn't find the built-in GPS on my phone but looked pretty nice. I didn't get a chance to test it out much because it wouldn't work, sadly....and I didn't feel like trying to make it work lol. IGO8 is great if you can get the right version. I think I had the EU version because I couldn't change KM/hr to M/hr and I was thoroughly annoyed by that. IGO8 did give a little lag, but not as bad as it was with Garmin. What turned me away from IGO was that damn KM/hr thing. I looked up how to fix it for a grand total of half an hour before I gave up and deleted it lol.
All that being said, I like TomTom. I would absolutely 100% delete TomTom and go with Garmin if I didn't experience the lag. It's just that annoying to me. But if you don't experience lag with Garmin I'd go with that.
another vote for igo
used tomtom on my wizard but I really like the UI on IGo on my serra, the custom skins that are available and the use of a sys.txt to set up a lot of preferences in the software. Lots of web resources out there for these things.
used EU and US mapping and found them both to be very good
you can add POI's in google earth kml format and the software converts them at start up - very handy but large numbers of POI's can course the software to have slow response times at start up
Does anyone use their GPS without a data connection ie: using stored maps? I tried to mess around with mgmaps for a few days but never got it to work.

IGO will work without data connection (flight mode on). Obviously, you need to have the program AND maps on your phone. Tomtom will not do the same. Even though it does not need any data connection, it will not establish GPS connection in flight mode. It will work if you turn data or cell radio on, even if there is no connection available (i.e. another country). Not sure about other programs.
Hope that helps.
Mike
yeah perfect. I skipped the data plan (use the nodata cab), so I just use wifi when I can and was trying to find a way to get gps on the road, storing the maps on my micro sd card. I'll look in to it!

TomTom looks interesting however I don't think Navigator 7 has any USA maps (but their Navigator 6 does). Seems to be a product tailored more towards the European crowd
Does anyone on here use COPILOT LIVE 8 USA? I have some issues and I wonder if anyone else can add some comments as to how to resolve? I have sent these to COPILOT SUPPORT but no response yet.. I am hoping to get all of these resolved:
1. I am alerted that I am at my destination BEFORE I actually get there. It also doesn’t tell me LEFT or right or ahead is my destination. Can this be resolved?
2. I tested 2 addresses today with COPILOT and a GARMIN GPS. The Garmin was dead on while COPILOT was lost and had be going in circles. This was while I was in a development with a LOT of little side streets. Can this be fixed?
3. when you get to your destination, it doesn’t give you the option to CLEAR the route. It asks me what I want to do but if I close the BOX, since I don’t want to do any of that, it keeps the route I am on. I noticed this as I use COPILOT to get home. Then today, I turned on copilot and it still said it was running the route to my house. I couldn’t find any way to clear it except to delete next stop. Then it cleared the route. I also see no way to click CANCEL ROUTE if you decide you don’t want to navigate to where you set. My Garmin has an "X" that I can hit to cancel route.
4. Program is missing a LOT of POI's .. For instance, I was sitting in a parking lot of WAL-MART which has been there for many years. It didn’t know this Wal-Mart existed. It did know about other ones nearby but not this one. Same with TARGET, I was sitting in a target parking lot and it didn’t know target was there.
5. Routing is wrong on some trips.. Sometimes it will tell me to turn left when you can't or when LEFT is the completely wrong way to go. How to fix?
6. I entered in SPEED TRAP DATA but it NEVER alerts me to any of them. I said YES to the fact I was importing SPEED TRAP data but it never did anything.. MEANWHILE, my Garmin did alert me.
7. It would be nice if I could pull addresses out of my EVO 4G address book so I don’t have to re-type them in and also if you could do voice entry of the data Like GOOGLE and SPRINT navigation already do.
8. It appears the maps are SEVERAL YEARS out of date. How do I get updated maps?
9. If I want to select a POI to travel to... I select the category, then pick my POI or type in the name.. Lets say WALMART. Then I find the walmart but then decide that wasn’t what I wanted. I then hit my back arrow on my phone and select a different category or maybe just type in a different name of a POI. When I then search for the new one, it brings me to the orig category and POI and NOT the new one. I have to completely back out back the main screen of copilot and then start over with finding a POI. I have to do this every time..
I hope someone can help resolve these issues... Thanks...
1. CoPilot alerts you with an audible alert slightly before the exact destination. I don't know why. But there is no fix for it, as I doubt they consider it a problem. CoPilot does not tell you that the destination is on the left or right. If you look closely on the map though for the destination flag, it will be drawn on the left or right side of the road. You can tell from that.
2. Read the review in the Android Market and Apple App Store for ALK's products in the US. ALK' maps are notoriously bad and out of date. They try and do their maps in-house instead of buying them from Navteq or TeleAtlas. As a result, customers suffer, but you also pay less.
3. ALK has known about this issue for a LONG time. I personally have sent the issue to them a year ago. The only way to cancel the route is to select the "remove next waypoint" option, or something to that effect, don't recall the exact name.
4. Same issue as the maps. They are bad. Try using the Google Search instead of the POI search within the app.
5. Buy a different app. The maps are bad, these are the repercussions of that.
6. Traffic camera alert functionality works. I have used it in the past. Don't say what you did wrong, but that function does work.
7. Don't hold your breath.
8. You don't. The maps are what they are. You can submit errors and they will correct them within 45 days supposedly. But when you are starting with maps as bad as they are, you'd be submitting problems every time you use the product.
9. Can't help you with that one.

I wouldn't say that Navigon is bad. It is just very v1.0 as far as features goes. Biggest issue is that there is no app2sd. It is Navteq data so it is as good as it gets from that perspective. They have yet to announce a map update policy either.

Does it work in USA? I dont see USA maps talked abut on their site..
Yes, Navigon has a US app.
tried Navigon and it stinks. WHILE the maps and routing is better and traffic seems to be included, its missing a lot of things that copilot does.. the POI icons on navigon and the map as so small you cant read anything while driving. AND in 3D mode, there are NO STREET NAMES. You also can not see a list of directions so you do not know what route is is taking you on. It DOES have some nice features though, but NOT at $61.00 .. My issue now, is trying to get a refund since it took almost 2 hours to download maps which is more then the 15 minute time limit. In fact, once I tested the program for 10 minutes driving I decided COPILOT, even with some of its flaws is better ... M probably have to call credit card company to get refund...
is there ANY program that is worthy of buying for a navigation program? or do I stick to my old garmin?
Your main options are Google Navigation, CoPilot, Navigon or Sprint Navigation. I've used them all. I also have a Garmin 885t and a TomTom 740 Live. I've owned about 6 other devices over the years. I can tell you that Google Navigation is my primary GPS at this point. I like it a lot. I miss nothing from my Garmin. I only miss the ability to detour specific segments of the route from TomTom. I miss nothing from Sprint Navigation. I deleted Navigon. It took way too much room and didn't have app2sd. I have CoPilot installed as a backup should I not have a connection to use Google Navigation. I will remove it and reinstall Navigon if it ever gets app2sd.
im rooted so I was able to put NAVIGON on the SD card. I just dont like some things, which I mentioned. Im actually trying another program that has a 7 day trial and is free from the market for the trial. Its called AURA. it says it uses the latest TOM TOM MAPS.. I ASSUME they are up to date. it also has traffic and other stuff.. Looks good on the web sites BUT I havent tested it yet as I am downloading some of the maps. this program also supports APP2SD without the trick I did for navigon..
so I am playing with AURA but It appears it doesnt speak street names.. thats a deal breaker... I have a support request in to see if it actually does this. I hope it does. it is one heck of a nice program... IM using the USA version
EDIT: Looks like it doesnt speak street names.. I have a support question to ask about this. This program would be AWESOME if it did. its got the NEWEST TOM TOM MAPS and it does almost everything I want. the NON SPEAKING STREET NAMES is a DEAL BREAKER.. I hope they answer my question and fix that issue...
