Hey all,
I have DarchLegend installed and I have 1700 SMS in one thread in messaging. I have Handcent as my main SMS app but this happens in the standard messaging app as well. When I go to delete the thread it takes a very long time and ends up locking up the phone. Anyone know of possibly a command line way of deleting sms? I assume it's located in a sqlite db so maybe I could use the sqlite3 binary (assuming it's included in busybox) to go in and delete all? Any other ideas?
You can clear out all of your texts using Fresh Pre Kitchen. Thats the only way I know how to delete that many.
When you have that many texts, it's gonna take some time. Just gotta break it down, little by little. Pretty sure the default messaging app has a way you can go into batch mode for individual threads.
I was deleting a couple 300+ test threads. What I did was click delete, then click it again. It would lock up handcent. I would then let the program sit for a few minutes. Then reboot the phone. Took a few tries but it worked.
Yeah, it's a known issue that the Hero really can't delete threads over like 500.
there are programs on the market for this...
Try: "Delete old Messages"
it can delete messages by time frames.
suggestion:
at night before bed
you can plug it in
start the delete process
got to sleep
and should be done buy morning!
if you have a lot.. it might take 2 nights.

+1 So far flawlessly.
I dont get it....
Why in God's name do you need to keep a SMS thread going that long?
I delete all my texts usually at the end of the day.
When have you ever gone back and read them?
If you're saving texts from a co-worker or subordinate for accountability that's one thing, but jesus christ... 1700 messages? Seriously?
So I might have issues deleting this 2400~ count thread I have going then?

I never bother to delete them...The only time I have (mentioned above) was to get rid of texts from my now ex gf that I didn't want as a reminder. Other then that I guess my cleaning is when I flash a rom that needs a wipe...haha. I never restore texts.
I use sms quick delete from the market.does the job right.
i think it is a good idea to do periodic deletes to clean the memory.
as I understand it.. it helps the speed of your sms program.

It seems as though the OS is now slower after rooting and flashing my G1. The whole OS and Apps like Messaging seem to be moving slower than when I had the stock image. Is it just me?

I'm gonna go it's just you. I've had my rooted over a month and I've never noticed a slowdown at all.
Make sure you regularly delete your text messages. If you have a few threads over 200 messages that can slow you down like crazy.

RC33 Update!
After updating the JFv1.5 RC33 update I noticed it help my system run quicker and with out small glitches! Great Work!
I had text message threads of over 900 messages and talk about slow!
i wiped the device, rooted and flashed to ADP (latest version) and its outstanding. It's as fast as ever now!
One thing I have wanted on this phone since I got it is to be able to know when a text message or other notification comes through while in a call. Like a short beep or something similar to the sound the G1 makes when the battery is low. I am not a huge coder, but love toying around with my rooted G1. Any takers? Anyone want to do this? Anyone else been wanting this??? Thanks for all who view this thread.
I think Handcent sms has this feature but we are still missing gmail and other notifications
Maybe someone can get this done, this is one of the few things that has bothered me about my g1 since I got it.
I know this isn't the place to ask, but a way to have the keyboard along with the face buttons stay lit until the keys lock would be the best thing. It's annoying to move the trackball every time to just get those buttons to light up every time.
Unless there is a way and I've just missed it every time.

Obviously you people aren't READING THE WHOLE THREAD.
We are aware that Handcent covers SMS/MMS notifications in voice calls, but what about gtalk, gmail, facebook, MSN, ect.
As far as I can gather, Handcent DOESN'T do this.
The OP is asking for someone to see if it's possible to modify the Phone.apk to include this. All of you "Members" and "Senior Members" need to get off your high horses, if you're true senior members (likely not the case as most of your post counts probably come from slamming people who "DO EVERYTHING WRONG!!!") remember the days when the Android section of this forum was still relatively young, everybody helped everybody, regardless of how unusual or stupid their questions seemed. These days if you're not 100% perfect in your initial post, you get slammed. Leading to more completely useless posts from all of you "Senior Members" that are taking up EVEN MORE space with useless drivel that's EVEN MORE useless than the OP.
I personally think this is a great idea, and whole heartedly support it, if I had the slightest idea how this is done, I would be on it right away.
Also, before anybody slams me for being wrong, I have never used Handcent for my SMS handler because I prefer the modified one that comes with my CM build, but if it DOES allow notifications for ALL APPS through calls, it could have saved a great deal of time to mention that.
This gets my support as well. I dont like Handcent. So if we can make it work with the standard APK, it will be awesome. I have asked around, for it to work, its not the Phone.apk that needs to be modified, its the .apk that giving out the notification that has to be modified. example is
for sms/mms, the mms.apk needs to be modified to check the phone status, and give out the correct sound notification. (not in call, use selected sound clip from external speakers; in call, use small beep sound in the ear speaker.)
same goes for gtalk, gmail, twidroid and any other apps that have notification.

Good to see some serious input here finally, depressing to know it would have to be handled by the corresponding application, being as some of them are off limits (gtalk/gmail/ect).
At least someone still has their head on straight here.

I'm sorry. I usually post something constructive, but this kind of crap makes me mad.
Why does it bother you that he had more than one question? How can you even complain about that? Uh oh, I just used 2, I probably have a "metal disorder" too, huh? You know what people accomplish by asking questions? They learn things. Yes sir, it is people like YOU, who don't ask questions or even make the slightest attempt to educate themselves, who shouldn't be "allowed to breed." When people like you breed, we get thick skulled smart-asses who think they're tough on the internet.
P.S. You used 7 extra periods that weren't needed. Your first sentence was a fragment. You used one capital letter. You used the wrong form of it's the first time. You used the wrong form of you're. You forgot a period after retard. It's supposed to be "mental" disorders. You used an ellipses incorrectly. You used "where" instead of "were."
P.P.S. His sentence wasn't even a fragment (I'm assuming you mean't "typed" instead of "type"). "I'm an idiot," says Mr. Grammer and Punctuation. There you go. Stop trying to be a hero for the board, that is the mods job. You saying "OMG RONG [email protected][email protected]!!" isn't helping a thing, considering 90% of people who post in the wrong thread just post one time. Especially when there are people before you that have pointed this out. I know it gives you an ego boost, but seriously, keep it in your pants. You are the one filling xda with garbage, not the people who have a question about a feature they would like to see implemented on their phone.
Thanks for bearing with me, everyone else.
Stefan, find something better to do than insult people in a forum. Next time you see something in the wrong place and someone has acknowledged it, I dare you to just skip over it.
I was going to delete this as well but it makes my point so much easier to make and its not a flame post or very hostile.

But, back on topic. Now that I know this, I support. Would be quite useful, as I have it set so apps get killed on screen off and it seems everytime I press "End" on a call, it goes blank and only thing that keeps me knowing I even have a sms is "Sms unread count" widget.

I do sometimes, especially when coordinating stuff with a few people. It will be something like talking to someone, then getting a text to update me on information to relay to the person I am talking to. Stuff like that.
Other times its just an compulsive need to reply text as soon as it comes in.
Also, another reason why you need to know if a text comes in while in a call : having 2 girlfriend. (not that I have 2 anyway)

you can with handcent i believe...it does it with vibrate or sound in call...
I have the TTSnotifier app and it will announce the callers name, if they are in my contacts, from call waiting. I also have it set to notify me of incoming texts as well. Doesn't work with email though. You will need the text to speech app from the market for it to work. You can customize the announcements. Hope maybe this will help. Can't remember where I got it from but I can e-mail it to you. [email protected]

Just emailed you.... I don't care if I don't get my texts or email but the absence of "call waiting" notification has been driving me nuts... to the point of really thinking of getting rid of G1. I mean, this is so basic, we shouldn't have to find workarounds just to enable this. If that app does that... it would be like a gift from heaven.

opinion? someone else may see the use in this.
I personally see no point in it, as the mail app covers all the basis, and the gmail app doesnt come with a widget...but I have a google branded phone, and could completely understand why I couldnt delete it (like how the IM app and the market are somehow closely related, and the deletion of one screws the other over) as it may cause issues.
On another note, is there a list somewhere that has all the apps safe to remove?

EDIT
After following the advice of a responder to my original question, I moved the gmail.apk and gmailprovider.apk to my sd card, then removed them completely from system/app. I have rebooted, found no errors (downloaded an app from the market as a test, and also emailed myself) and most importantly, for the first time, have not had to resign into my google account upon reboot. Dont know if it was luck or wat, but Ive had to resign in everytimw (not a big de, but other then the intermitent lights, its the only bug Ive found with dcv1)
Im sure most of you are satisfied with the gmail app, but I personally prefer the mail app, as you can link more than one account and it has the widget. Ive noticed no delay in recieving or sending or any error outside of the mail/gmail app. Thought you all might be interested in knowing my findings

All 17 pages of 'Apps Safe To Remove' talked nothing of gmail, other than how rming other apps effected Gmail; the search function brought up no answers, unless I missed something (which is very possible )
Id appreciate your help.
Try moving it and not completely removing it? Then if the phone crashes/wont work, you can move it back to it's proper location through recovery..?
I've never wanted to remove the stock gmail app, since the standard app doesn't requires checking of email, whereas the gmail app is a push email (I think?) I get notifications of gmail faster on my phone than I do on my PC.

The gmail servers notify your phone when you have a new email, instead of the phone polling the servers for new email (that is pull)
Saves battery life as your phone can sit idle and wait for google servers to tell it to get mail.

Have you guys tried using Exchange ActiveSync in the mail app for Gmail, this will make it push rather then pull. I believe you need to use m.google.com as the server, and change the frequency to "as items arrive".

Then you might just be screwed. Current speculation is that the trackball thing is intentional. If you check...whenever you get e-mail or a text message the trackball lights up. This behavior is quite possibly intended and a possible change for the 'official' 2.1 ROMs.

I can confirm that this is not a fix. I've had gmail deleted for weeks now (using k9 for pushing work and personal email) and I've still been getting the sign-in notification.
I was also thinking you need that for the market.
Wondering whether I am the only one with this issue
I SMS a lot and like keeping the SMS on my device. I had recently an extremely unpleasant surprise: my total list of conversations was back to... ONE conversation with my last SMS and... That's it!!! Thousands of SMS gone
I happen to save everything with mIQ and hopefully it's not lost. However I had the experience already twice in the past 2 weeks so I am wondering:
Is this a feature from Android? Big SMS file --> autoarchive? If then how do I disable it or how do I recover my SMS?
Is it a bug? In which case this is extremely severe and not serious for such an expensive device or for an OS that is expected to be a safe one
Is it from Samsung implementation? Or Android itself?
Please share your experience, I'd like to know if I am the only one and if there is any solution (My "old" Touch Pro 2 with WM 6.5 never lost a single SMS although having more than 30,000 SMS in the box)
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
Am I the only one? Several years without any loss os SMS on different WM devices and I wiuld be the only one losing them on my shiny new device with the wonderful android OS?

Ive never let my SMS get to more than 500, mainly because I don't like scrolling through congressional. Never had this issue though.

you really shouldnt keep that many sms around anyhow with android, its likely to cause some issues but did you check the settings on the sms app? mine has settings to delete threads after a certain number and is set to 200 by default.
I use a program called Backup to Gmail. Works excellent.
It let's me delete sms'es on the phone while my Gmail account keeps them all even if I delete them on the phone.
It can also restore sms'es.MMS restore is not supported yet but backup works good.

Thanks, I know a few of these. Without being able to restore --> kind of useless for me... Actually as far as I remember some CAN restore

why would you even want that many, its not like you are going to read through 20k sms
It's funny like the answers are more about having less SMS or why wanting that many rather than why the SMS client or the OS Re broken...

I have more than a thousand conta ts I converse regularly with. Then add a certain number of sms per conversation and u get there
Anyway I do not even have that many on my Tab... Far less than on my previous device. And this disappointing device/os/client combination cannot even manage them... What do you expe t me to do or say? Go back to my TP2? Honestly this is ridiculous
meanwhile I'd like to know if I am the only one and if someone knows some fises (other than delet my SMS or but an iPad...)

give handcent a try and use their backup service, ive never had a problem with the stock sms app, currently theres around 300txts for 20 contacts, and 50 or so for the rest.
No problem here as I don't keep a lots of sms. But had a problem with new sms going into the wrong contact profile. So, have to be extra careful not to reply to the wrong person.
Anyone faces the same problem?

Deleting would help more than the purchase of an iPad, as that uses the 3g chip to get a data connection, while both the texting and voice service are ignored.
That said... I never got this issue, but my brother has a relatively similar one: long messages tend to be split, mixed and (why not, since we are at it) partly deleted. That is on Eclair using an Xperia X10 mini pro.
Never had this kind of issue when i was at my peak of sms usage: store on the MMC, and there you go, thousands of sms on a puny Nokia 3650.

Hi all
My son 13-year-old must submit his phone to me every night. Is there any software that I can read his SMS event if the SMS were deleted?
I will appreciate all your ideas and advices.
Here's an idea, give your son some privacy.

Even tho I agree you should give him privacy and build trust with him, I'll help you out.
You could get a app (not sure of name) that makes a nandroid of every thing (including SMS) and have it set on a timer to do so. So at a random point in the day it will backup everything in it and restore it quickly to see what's up, then unrestore. (Maybe titanium backup?)
If his phone is rooted you can easily do it with the app called undelete.
Im a parent I get it. But I think you're going to far and invading their privacy which will cause he or she to rebel big time once they find out...and make no mistake your kid will find out.

Protecting you child by giving him no privacy...
Besides if he wants to hind something from you he will, your options have been given, but then again he could prevent any of them if he wanted or just delete messages as soon as he has got them so at the most you get a couple
Hey guys, don't assume anything about the OP's reasons for asking the question.
Maybe his son has had bad habits or "friends" that no "real parents" would like their sons to ever meet.
He asked a technical question (giving the reason why and he could have just asked the question "as is", which would be my advice for any of such question in the future) and if you don't want to answer it because you think it's "bad", well, don't answer it, but please, keep your remarks for yourself.
If you want to discuss about parenthood and the like, there are forums dedicated to such subject. xda is a technical site, so let's keep it technical)
The nandroid backup is a good idea .
Another one
If your career allows you to get your messages, sms, mms, and even voice mail by email (in some unified messaging system or even with IMAP), you could use that. Usually, the messages are NOT deleted from the messaging server when they are deleted from the phone.
My own career provides such a service.
I think we are done here.
Thanks.
