Tired of manilla/TF2D; Any advice? - General Questions and Answers

Heya, thanks for reading.
I've got a Jade with Manilla 2D, but after using it for almost a year now I'm beginning to get tired of manilla. It works well and looks nice, but I'm looking for something new and refreshing.
I've got SPB Mobile Shell's 15-day trial, but before purchasing a license I'd like to know which alternatives there are.
So far I've seen TF2D, and messed around a bit with SPB MS 3.
How is PointUI Home 2 compared to them?
And are there any other 'today-replacers' I should look into?
Thanks in advance!

SPB mobile shell on raphael

hi all,
Yesterday I installed SPB mobile shell.
I played and configured with it the whole evening......
but DAMN!!! I LIKE IT!
The whole interface is SO MUCH BETTER then the tflo....
It's easy to navigate...it looks nice....and it runs like a charm!
Anybody else installed this beauty?
yup, i did.
but i dont like it that much.
it runs good, but i guess i got a different taste for eye candy
I installed it as well and I must admit it's very useful.
And I use the Second Today program - this way I get to keep Touch Flo as well It's the perfect combination.

I like the graphics of TF3D but to me it was all form and no function. Mobile Shell is sooo much better.

Windows Mobile 6.5: the UI was rushed, more on widgets

A TechEd 2009 video gives more information on widgets, talks about how the UI in Windows Mobile 6.5 was rushed, and that Silverlight won't be coming till a later version.

and your suprised by this?
I had the beta on my omnia for what must have been about 10 seconds.... its awefull.
SPB Pocket Shell/TouchFlow are FAR better (well SPB PS is the best of both but thats my personal opinion).

I am not surprised
In fact I have not installed and donĀ“t want to...
Just wanted to share the info
the home screen from 6.5 is a long overdue 6.1 update.
remember when standard got chome in 6.1 and when the shadow got the first version in 6.0...
every professional user asked where is our home screen update ?
microsoft said they had no plans on a professional chome version. but looking at the reg for 6.5 its the same minus a few changes from tmobile neo home screen and 6.1 standard chome.
so microsoft needs to step up and hire some actuall workers instead of these assclowns living the comfortable life and releasing crappy upgrades.
Well, don't be so surprised it's only a bit of a cosmetical change. Although some things are really changed from the ground up (apparantly). But all in all it's just a patched up 6.1, just to get through time until WM7 comes out.
And ofcourse they're not going to invest such an amount of money and effort in 6.5 when they have WM7 coming along. It's just that they were forced in 'upgrading' 6.1 because the whole market is asking for finger friendly and smooth scrolling stuff.
Personally I think 6.5 is what 6.0 should have been (or at least 6.1). MS is a bit too late. While we all here kinda love WM, the WM platform is getting more and more negative amongst people. And with Android, Palm Pre and the iPhone as direct competition I don't think 6.5 will close the gap :/.
That said, I do love the improvements in 6.5. It's better than 6.1. And that's about it, but a welcome change and improvement. And improvement which we should have gotten a long time ago!
6.5 is just a band-aid to hold people off until WM7 comes, which should be awesome (if it ever comes). WM6.5 is certainly an improvement over previous WM versions, but it's still nothing too special.
However, the one thing I really notice is the new IE6 mobile. It actually works quite well, and I've been using it instead of Opera for a while, with no regrets. The only problem is that is still doesn't do flash video very well on my device, but that will probably improve in more final builds. Overall, I'm quite happy with it.
WM 6.5 is certainly better than 6.1, as I said before, but seeing how much time MS put into it, it seems like we could have gotten something a little better than some bigger menus, minor UI tweaks, a new home screen, and an improved browser (not really saying much, my 1980 Commodore PET does better web browsing than the old version of PIE). Just some of my thoughts.
Dave
If you ask me, looking at the size of a software project it is, they didn't invest a lot of time in it at all. As they admit, it's rushed.
I think they started this too late, and rushed us a semi finished product which does resolve some of the biggest issues most people have with WM. But the 6.5 was probably never planned in a way as it is now... I doubt they started it after (or even before as is kinda usual) 6.1.
I love WM 6.5, I think that the improvements may not be amazing, but they are still needed, and help improve the overall experience of WM.
I've been using our great xda chefs 6.5 beta roms for months, and I would never go back to 6.1!
The UI is one thing...
That MS is incapable of producing semi-decent applications (SMS, Phone, Weather), which any programmer is capable of doing in a couple of months is a disgrace.
The SMS application specifically, even in 6.5, makes me puke. It's 1993 all over again. It's f****g unprofessionnal.
I have little hope for 7 to be honest... And I will probably go back to the iphone or to Android

Upgrade from VOX- Move to PPC or Smartphone ?

I am using my VOX for almost one and half years and I am feeling like upgrading to a more recent product. Since many of you are having a wide experience of using PPC I would request you to suggest my next upgrade as to whether to go for a PPC or remain in smartphone. My thinkings/doubts apprehensions are as follows:
1) I am being allured by Touch varieties of WINMO, the reason being, bigger screens, smart looks and above all the wide availability of softwares both in numbers as well as variety. In fact I love to install various apps to my phones and enjoy fiddling with them.
2)UI or Touch Operation : Though I have recently purchased a Nokia 5800 and I have quite well adapted myself fully on Symbian touch screens. I would like to know what are the advices/experiences of actual users in WINMO. By the way the TouchFlow3D/2D attracts me very much and I like the kinetic scrolling and gesture control of WINMO devices.
3)Although it is pretty sure that I will go for HTC (of course due to this huge and unique support of XDA-DEVELOPERS) is there any other practically viable alternative?
4)The battery lives of WINMOs are generally poorer than symbian etc. What about battery lives of PPC in comparison to Smartphone (WinMOs)?
Thanks
Hey
I can't answer all your questions, but here are my 2 cents:
For battery life the s710 is awesome. Online reviews of other phones will tell you what to expect from a new phone, you'll have to do the research.
Personally, I wanted my phone to be a PHONE with internet, etc on the side.....rather than a mini-internet browser with some phone functionality on the side (if you see what I mean), which is why I went for an s710.
The next best option I see is this, and I was considering this for myself at one point: http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=161302
Basically I think you'll have to decide what you want out of the phone. Do you want to be fiddling with a stylus to send texts? Ive been told touchscreens won't work out if its drizzling outside and specks of water are splashing on the screen. Touchscreen is cool, it's just not as precise as a keypad.
There are loads of advantages to PPC's (many of which you know). You'll just have to figure out what suits you personally.
(also there's no alternative to doing the leg work.....if you want to find the best deal out there, you'll have to do the research).
Oh and also, if you find something cool let me know.....
What about the HTC Hero?

Hero is a Android phone which I am interested in. I will only restrict my choice within WinMO.
I'm going to "upgrade" in 2 months. I'm going for the Touch Pro 2.
It has WM 6.1 pro with a free upgrade from HTC to 6.5, the big keyboard, high res screen (480*800).
Further it has 3G, GPS.
To me it looks like a kick-ass phone. I'm saving up money for it right now

It sure is!
The diamond 2 has almost the same features, only no keyboard. And since the Vox i don't think i can live without
But it's all up to you

so so so bored with the Treo Pro

REEEEALLLLLLLLLY bored with it...
Nobody wants to see this ****. Post this somewhere else.
mind your business noob....
This should not be posted in the upgrading section. Please don't clutter this forum with threads like this. They really don't contribute in any way!
I believe that a lot of people agree with you that it's a boring device when it comes to ROM's etc. On the other hand you can still tweak it a lot!
I use a TouchPro2 now but I just can't get rid of my Pro 'cause it's such a good device for me
Hope there will be some new life into this thread when the Pro get's released by other providers.

As a matter of fact yes, we have an unlocker and 3 roms to choose from, but all 3 are not working the way they should. We need more cooks and more testers before things get released that simply do no work.
why don't you just ditch the phone and get an htc hero when it comes out. that's what i am going to do, eventually (probably dec 15, my birthday, when i get $$$). the phone was once good but now obsolete. there are so much better phones than it coming out if not already out.
Bored with your Treo Pro?
Give it to me, i have a Tilt2 (Touch Pro 2) and I'm just as bored it not more. (Wow i been around since 2006 and this is my first post begging for a phone) Sad.
trade?
I will trade you for a used HTC fuze if you want...I am bored with it as well and am looking for something with a front facing keyboard...but its gotta be a gsm treo pro

Damn,... I wish I could trade it with you,.. sadly mine is GSM subsidized.. so I can't get rid of it. Love my Treo Pro,.. but I'm as bored as anyone.. I carry it and my Touch Pro2 and I still can't get enough of the eye candy on Sense..
Wish someone brought Sense to a 320x320 device..
the treo pro is a much better phone over the Fuze or TP
I traded my TP for Treo Pro and... I never once after like 6 months thought about the TP. I did not miss a single thing about it.
Not so boring anymore--Try Androkkid and add programs
The windows today screen is boring but the Treo Pro can be updated with a launcher. Adrokkid gives you the android feel,is fully customizable and works ok on the 320x320 screen. Cab express 4.0 is a great program to update your Treo Pro. Lets you see utilities and more, see ratings and instant download. Battery usage can be limited by doing manual updates on email, weather and gps. Otherwise Treo is constantly checking same.
@Sagitario
I'm using Pointui with Pointsense theme. Search for 320x320 on Community section of website. www.pointiu.com

You can use a cooked rom on this device too

spb mobile shell for android is almost here!

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1567217#post1567217
it's coming!!!!
SPB is now accepting applications for private beta at http://www.spb.com/beta
You may read the news story by going to http://getandroidstuff.com/spb-mobile-shell-android-50-home-replacement-app-hits-beta-sign/
So, summarized, what exactly is this?
Basically it's another home replacement. I had it on my wm touch pro. It's got some ok features but it's just another shell. Google it and you will see what it does. Looks real similar to the iPhone knock off rom evos have
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
i had it for my vogue and treo pro, its cool on wm because you didnt have multiple home screens and widgets but on android even the default launcher had that stuff, so i dont really see the upsides of it also i am not a big fan of paying for apps
if it is anything like the wm version, expect to pay about $30 for it
