Google Maps can't find me...GPS not working... - General Questions and Answers

I have an HTC Touch Pro from Alltel. I downloaded and installed Google Maps for Mobile. I says "Your current location is temporarily unavailable" and in the top right it says "Seeking GPS Satellites (0)". It never finds any and therefore never finds my location.
I DID have it working at one point and it worked for an hour or so then it magically stopped working again. I tried it today, outside with clear skys and no dice. I updated GPS with QuickGPS, I turned on "my location" in the phone settings.
The only thing I can assume is that it is blocked until you pay for the navigation service from Alltel, but that doesn't explain why it worked at one point.
Update: It seems to work ok in Ocala, FL but not in Sarasota, FL which really confuses me.

If you do not have it already, install Advanced Config and disable gps logging and set the log size to 0

If you do not have it already, install Advanced Config and disable gps logging, aGPS and set the log size to 0

I'm in the exact same boat but using a Sony Ericsson Xperia (X1). I snagged AC and those options were already disabled. Any other ideas?
Oh and I just realized that I even had it working briefly last night, just like the OP. I was in my living room and opened up Google Maps and it found me somewhere in Korea (lots of Korean labels, I think it was accurate) but today it sees me way over in Singapore and says it has found my position to the nearest 25000 meters. I didn't change anything from last night to today.

Thanks for the Reply!!! I tried downloading that program and I went to do what you said but I am not totally sure what you ment. The log value was already at 0, my GPS was disabled (which i enabled and it still didn't work), and I am not sure how to turn off the log thing, it only allows me to change the location of the log I think. Do you have more detailed instructions? Im kinda slow

Disable the logging (not gps)

I don't see how to "disable" the logging.
The options that I have when I expand the GPS +
-
Assisted GPS: disabled (default)
Log File: \windows\GPSLogFile.txt
Old log file: \windows\GPSLogFileBack
Max. log file size: 0
Those are the current settings...do I delete the log?

Have to see what port is your GPS is set up on your phone and might have to download the latest GPS info.

Tilt with HTC ROM - GPS Issue

I have a Tilt (8925) with the stickied HTC ROM. Everything has been great, but I am having issues with GPS. I have downloaded both Google Maps and Live, gone in and checked the GPS settings of COM4 and Baud 4800. Neither of the two applications recognize that I have GPS. Am I missing something? Do I need to enable something on the device that I do not have active?
Thanks in advance!! Best Forum on the NET!
go to settings> System > External GPS settings
Programs should be COM4:
Hardware should be (None) and 57600
Access should be "checked"
Kaiser's GPS works differently from the others (I was using the Trinity) and the GPS Streams does not update like like the trinity.
After that, go to an open space, and get a sync first.
Thereafter, its all ok.
Thanks for the input. I have made the suggested changes and will get out in the open and try again. I'll post back with results.
When on the 8925 firmware, I manually set com4/4800 in google maps. And it never could get a sync in time, despite me running quickgps. I had to use another program to jumpstart it, which would take anywhere from 1 to 4 minutes the first time.
Now that I'm on htc firmware, I just let all the gps settings at default. Didn't configure them in google maps (default there is to use windows settings). Ran quickgps. Google maps gave me the couldn't do it message 3 or 4 times. But I was just playing around still and one time it just locked on. Ever since, it gets a lock in about 5-10 seconds.
After going outside, the GPS finally enabled and I was able to use it with Google Maps and Live. Before today, I had tried to do it inside....thanks again for the tip!
I tried this; clicked okay. I tried soft reset/hard reset and neither keeps the new setting (from 4800 to 57600).
Any ideas?
Note: I just upgrade to 2.0.0.12 from 1.00 so let me see if that solves the problem. Will report back.
Note2: That solved the problem (who knew that upgrading could actually fix something).

[Q][SOLVED!!!] Fuze GPS Issues?

Hey all, I picked up my Fuze yesterday at a local AT&T store, and I'm really happy with it with the exception of one thing: I can't get the GPS to work. I've downloaded Google Maps Mobile, installed it. I ran QuickGPS to download the latest satellite data, and Google Maps still just sits there and says "Seeking GPS Satellites (0)..."
Any ideas or any settings I need before this works?
SOLUTION:
If you've installed AT&T Navigator, uninstall it. Be sure to call 611 and make sure that you were not charged the GPS service charge on this month's cycle.
Either the HTC guy didn't know his stuff, or this just happens to work around the "Telenav-Only" Block.
I've successfully gotten repeated locks on Google Maps without the use of Telenav. It's not even installed. Here's the procedure to get a (relatively) fast GPS lock:
If you don't already have it, download Advanced Configuration Tool v3.3 (or newer) (see here: http://touchxperience.com/en/advanced-configuration-tool.html) (needs .Net Compact Framework 3.5. see here: http://www.modaco.com/content/windo...act-framework-3-5-without-upgrading-your-rom/).
In the Advanced Configuration Tool go to GPS. Make sure the subsettings are as follows: (the last one is 32KB if you were wondering)
Assisted GPS: Enabled
Log file: \windows\GPSLogFile.txt
Old log file: \windows\GPSLogFileBack.txt
Max. log file size: 32768
Next, download and install GPS Test 1.04 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=129672&d=1226619670)
Now, every time after a soft-reset (or each day) you want to use the GPS, perform the following actions:
Run QuickGPS and download new satellite info.
Run GPS Test (ensure that GPS settings are on COM4 and a baud rate of 38400).
GPS Test will give you a bar and a signal strength indicator for each satellite. The fix process can take a couple minutes, but just give it some time. Upon getting a 3D lock, it will display "GPS Running".
At this point, you can exit GPS Test and open up Google Maps, TomTom, Garmin, iGo, whatever map tool you use. The navigation app should get a quick (< 30 seconds) fix with anywhere from 7-10 satellites depending on location. It will continue to do this until a long duration of time has passed (I'm talking 5-10 hrs (haven't tested)) or until a Soft-Reset.
This procedure worked for me. I don't know if it'll work for everybody, but I think it's pretty reasonable, the wait time isn't too long for a GPS fix. Good luck and god speed, gentlemen. Let me know if this works for y'all or not.

Mine does too - I think you may want to check out the numerous GPS threads on here on how people corrected theirs. I have been busy doing other stuff to worry about the GPS, so I haven't tried any of their advice, but there are Tons of threads on the GPS issue.
i'll look into it, although i didnt think it was the same issue...

Mine works, but so far only at home sitting in an east-facing window. Have you tried calling HTC Support? I called about another matter and got an answer right away. The US number is: 866-449-8358.
Let us know how you make out if you call!

Most people are just complaining about lag, but there are a few posts about people having trouble getting a fix. It looks like tomtom and the gps tool are trying, but they just won't get a fix. I even stood outside in the cold for 30 minutes, and it never would work. I made all the changes with advanced config and also the manual registry changes... pretty much every suggestion I've found in all the other threads, but nothing works. If I happen to come across a solution, I'll definitely pass it on... but I'm less than optimistic at this point.
I had the same issue - I grabbed the Diamond TomTom cab (from diamond forum - no maps needed) and was able to see the progress of locking in the satelites.. It took about 10 minutes of the phone sitting outside to get a lock for GPS. Now that it has locked once (I have rebooted several times btw) it seems to pick up the lock a lot faster.
And.. I have not tweaked my GPS settings and a-gps is still enabled.
The GPS is a little shotty if you ask me.. I'm sure something will be changed in software down the road to speed up getting a lock.
I have the same issue
Google maps just keeps timing out
google maps wont work for me
Not sure if this will help or not, but I had mucked with my GPS com port settings (under Settings, GPS Settings).
For Programs: Com4
For Hardware: (None)
Baud Rate 4800
For Access: Manage GPS automatically (recommended) --- Is checked.
In Google Maps, I have the "Managed by Windows" radio button selected.
Doing that allowed me to pull up the satellites in about 10 mins the first time, then a lot more quickly after that.
I have no idea what that actually did, but it made GPS work in google maps for me.
I think it would be a good idea to get a program that shows you GPS lock status, so you can see which satellites are detected and their signal strength. Other than that, just leave the phone outside with a clear view of the sky for a little while and see what happens.

I had the same problem at work. I think GPS will work outside. Mine started working with Google Map and Live Search when I was driving.
If that still doesn't work, try install at&t navigator. Maybe it will unlock the GPS.
GPS solution
Hi all I spoke with HTC and you need to download and enable Telenav to activate the GPS. It did not ask me to sign up there is basic turn by turn once it is downloaded and gives you the option to upgrade. Once telenav was installed google maps found satelites within 30 seconds. hope this helps
Ah, that explains why it worked for me -- when I bought my Fuze, I let the salesman sign me up for the 30-day free trial of Telenav. I expect to cancel it, but I was curious to see what it was like.
Same worked for me. I tried the 30 day free trial and now the GPS works. TeleNav doesn't even seem that bad since it checks traffic for you...
No GPS lagging behind reporting your position like the TP?
I have not seen any lag. it is very quick
so basically telenav unlocks the gps and then after one use, it unlocks the gps for use with tomtom or garmin?

Seriously. Didn't you ask why?. Or question this since its an apparant marketing ploy. I heard the same for tomtom. It took my gps a while to to get the first time but after then it locked significantly faster.
i agree, it is shady, but in the end, it works. i got a perfect signal (locked into 6 satellites) with google maps, almost instantly (after connecting once with telenav).
its smart on at&t's part, but now i'm going to look at the cab and see if i can find what makes it work!
can anyone upload the telenav app so i can unlock my gps. i dont have the stock rom anymore(changed to natf rom) and telenav isnt on there.

GPS "Your location within 1900 meters" ?? VZW TP2

Recently my Google Maps has not been able to lock in on my location closer than 1500 to 1900 meters. I have hard reset and reinstalled GMaps with no luck. I have seen tweaks for Sprint and TMo users and have read that most VZW users are having no problems locking in. Are there any tweaks that I can try for the VZW TP2?
there are numerous gps tweaks to change the cache settings if you search for them. also try using the program quickgps which comes with your phone it will download the closest satellite info. inside my building i cant lock on any sats but outside i can get between 8-9 and within 10 meters of my location
Make sure location is turned on.
If you do the quickgps program on the phone it will turn location on for you and download the closest satelites for you and you should get a lock in like 10 seconds when you are outside.
Unless you turn on location you will just get your general location with google maps, mine said within 2800 meters till I used QuickGPS.
I have duplicated your problem by unchecking the gps option after you open google maps and pressing menu and the down arrow. Make sure the location setting is on as prior post stated and then after you open google maps make sure gps is checked in the menu and it will say that it is searching for satellites.
also make sure you change your gps settings in google to com4 and a baud of 4800
you also have to re-enable the "use gps" after changing this
I was able to dublicate the problem aswell, by accedent >_<, anyway, make sure the location setting for google maps is selected.
confirming what others here are saying, that's pretty much what I experienced with GPS unchecked in the main right softkey menu. If you don't have that checked it's using cell antennas or wifi to approximate your position. "Menu" > "Use GPS" and it should work by default.

Leaving it set to the "Managed by Windows" setting works just fine for me. No issues, and definitely use the Quick GPS program, it saves a headache. In fact im sitting on my couch in my appartment on the bottom of three floors built on the side of a hill with 2 sides of earth, and I have a strong 8 to 9 sats.
I just got my TP2 yesterday and one of the first things I did was install google maps and I was getting result like the title of this thread "within 1800 meters" and it could be a mile off. also the sats were not locking at all. I realized that my position was based on the tower that I was connected to. By the way the google maps on my VX6800 never used the towers to triangulate a position but the gps lock were much slower. Once I ran the quick GPS in the programs menu it turned on the GPS to the right setting and now I get an accurate lock even inside within seconds.
Go to settings-all settings-personal-phone-cdma services-location setting and make sure that it is set to "Location On". If not, you are not actually using the GPS. With that on and with QuickGPS doing it's thing, you will lock instantly.
I have a Verizon TP2 that is two weeks old. It does not have QUICK GPS! Oh yeah, and the gps does not locate.
Do I?
Return it?
Hard Reset? (sounds like a lot of work)
Get the file somewhere?
I have had it twice to Verizon. They have no suggestions but are happy to see the device and get their hands on it.
Leaning towards exchanging it for a new one.

[Q] Weather Widget shows wrong location on my new TF

I just got my brand NEW Asus TF 16GB from Amazon. I did the update first.
Then I noticed that it displays the wrong location in the weather widget.
I have GPS, Wifi and Google location tracking enabled.
Anyone else got the wrong location with this Tablet? Any way to get it work properly? I have not tried a different location either.
oh and google map app shows the correct location so I guess it knows where it is. Strange...
I know I can set it manually but I would like to know if it can be fixed to work in auto mode.
Any how this is a great site full of TF information.
Thanks in advance...
VeeKay
yeah, I hope there is a fix for this.
Mine also pinpoints me fine on the map.
But, weather widget says i'm in a small community, two cities away.
And a search to enter location manually, finds my city no problem.
Of course I prefer to leave it on AUTO.
Tap the weather widget and you can set your location manually, or force it to refresh.
I manually set mine to my location, then turned it back to automatic and it's been fine since.
Thanks for the tip
I tried that but unfortunately it didn't work. It goes back to the wrong location
I all of a sudden started having this issue. When i'm at home it says that i'm in a city that's more than 40 miles away which I've never even traveled near with my TF.
I've tried deleting the widget, checking google maps, and still it puts me in the wrong location.
This started happening less than a week ago.
Mine has said "Asahi ku" since I got it... I have no idea where that is.
Does anyone have an alternate GPS program installed like Locus?
I uninstalled that and it looks to be working fine now.

Ok I spoke prematurely.
If I go into Google maps, it places me in the right location but for some reason, starts out in the location 40 miles away.
The Asus widget seems to be broken.

[Resolved] Network location broken?

I picked up a Charge last Friday and rooted it the next day. However, both before and after the root (to gummycharged) the network location functionality was broken. Maps would only give me a location if GPS was enabled; trying to get one with GPS off gives a "Please enable a My Location source in system settings" popup even though "VZW Location services" is checked. And nevermind the legal message that comes up every time GPS is enabled...
So the question is, did I break something? I've searched for stuff all day, and though there was some stuff about things being broken with that function on other devices around the end of last year, I haven't seen anything since. I'm wondering if I should just wait for a gingerbread ROM to come along and install that to see if that fixes things...
Update: I have tried copying in a networklocation.apk file from another ROM into my system/app folder, but still no luck. I don't understand why it won't even try to use the network location. I even found the NetWork Location app, which seems to be working just fine and giving me lat/long. It just doesn't work for maps.
VZW Location Services isn't a source that google maps (or pretty much any other program on your phone) can access. That service is only for Verizon Navigator (which is $10/mo and doesn't provide much that Google Maps gives you for free).
So, you have to enable one of the other location services, either the GPS or the google location services.
Google wrote the message that "Please enable a My Location source in system settings" but Verizon added the menu entry for their location services after that. That's why it sounds like checking the Verizon box should make maps work, but it doesn't.
Ah, that makes some sense now. *smacks forehead*
So, I've checked the Google box, and now I don't get the message any more, but it still won't give me a location even after rebooting.
Should I go back and install the regular gummycharged mod? I think my screwing around with networklocation.apk may have actually broken it...
EDIT: IT WORKS!!! Went back, reinstalled gummycharged, and it f'ing works!
You, sir, are The Man. Or The Woman, as the case may be.
