plzzzzzzzz i need help - General Questions and Answers

how can i copy my sms from my old mobile Nokia N95 to my new one HTC Diamond?

It's been a long time since I used symbian, but I seem to remember being able to go to message settings and change the memory being used and you could move all your sms to the memory card. That would get them off the phone.
Importing to windows mobile is a bit more complex. I've seen a few programs out there but haven't found a free one yet.

if you have a symbian app which can support pim files.. you're good to go.

maybe this one of cause restoring a backup of a whole xda1 to a xda2 may not be the best idea
maybe you should read this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=6517&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
or this tool
http://www.yorch.net/apps.htm
not sure if it works for restoring on the xda2 though
Try this:

Jeyo Mobile Companion. It uses a similar technology to the Smart Phone Studio software which is no longer available. You'll be able to backup your SMS messages and then restore them to a different Pocket PC or Smartphone.

How fast is your Orbit?

Hey folks,
I've had the O2 Orbit for just over a week now and have been trying various things with it. However, I noticed it took me 1 min and 2 seconds to access the windows directory!
Is this normal? Please post how long it takes you to access the folder...
Thanks!
SG
My Orbit Specs:
WM OS 5.1.342 (Build 15096.3.0.0)
ROM version 1.25.206.2 WWE
25 secs. Only had spb shell running as well.
Wow! That's quick, wonder why mine's so slow? Please all, post your times!
my specs are exactly the same as yours! what build and version of WM5 have you got?
WM5 is extremely slow at accessing the Windows directory using File Explorer. I find its quicker when using something like Total Commander, but even then its not as quick as WM6. Nothing to do with the processor speed, bug (if you like to clall it that) in WM5.
Yeah, I used File Explorer. Hmmm... you make an interesting point.
HPJ - what version of Windows Mobile are you using?
I'm on WM5. It's about as vanilla as they come. Like I said, I am only uing SPB shell....nothing else...the rest is out of the box! (And I might even ditch shell as it seems to run my battery down quicker.)
Oh, I have the storage card fix...that's it.
Yeah, I have the Currupt SD Card fix too...
All I have done is installed TomTom Navigator 6 , iGo-my-way and a couple of games.
This still doesn't explain why there's a vast difference in time to access the windows folder. Would be good to see what others are getting.
One thing I noticed is that my phone is unlocked. I put my Orange sim card in and it works!
Also, I've got an icon put on by O2 that actually lets me close programs down from the Today screen..
SG
markquinton, could you give us your time too?
yeah Ive got the icon from o2 with a load of things on it....
have you timed the opening again?? sure it wasnt just a one off? seems a bit odd, mine always opens before 30 secs
I've tried accessing the folder 4 times, it takes over a minute each time...
SG
o2 Germany released an official Windows Mobile 6 ROM, maybe that will satisfy you.
Just my two cents.
If you look at my common file dialogs you should get a time of 15-18 seconds for a windows directory on a wm2005 device to display. After that its ~7 seconds for a sorting in order of name, size or type if you click on the header. Thats showing all files (ie not hiding dll's etc as many file explores do).
Get it here from my old site http://odeean.veritel.com.au/programming_files/commonDialog.htm
SG - I wouldnt mess with the German WM6 (unless you really know what your doing).
If you've tried all else, and you're still within your 14 days, get o2 to pick it up and send another. And chuck something free in there for messing you about.
It just shouldnt take over 1 min, and you might find other problems if the phone has some core problem....could just be a lemon
Thanks for the adive HPJ.
This is something I did think of. But everything else seems to work ok.
There are a few reason that makes me want to hang on to it though:
I had spent 2 days getting my calender up to date.
I only use Outlook at work, but due to security we cant sync any devices to our computers. Do you know the best way to get my Calendar off the Orbit?
For all the other software I've put on, I've got a back up on my home computer so real problem putting these back on.
The other thing that makes me not want to give it back is that the phone is unlocked. I'm using an Orange sim card in there and have still got my O2 sim in my old phone. Are all the Orbits unlocked or did I just get lucky?
SG
You've got some cool files on your website Odeean...

use dotfred's pimbackup for calender (and contacts, and tasks, and sms...) backup.
and spb backup (the trial allows 5 x uses). save both to a storage card and execute on another orbit
(i agree, o2 don't lock their phones, and btw i don't own an orbit but all stock roms take forever to open windows)
i just tested the file explorer vs gsfinder, and the inbuilt file explorer was quicker
I have an Orbit. It takes mine roughly 6 turns of the colour wheel to get into the Windows directory with Resco Explorer. Its set to hide ROM files only; .dlls, .cpls, etc are shown as normal along with file extensions.
Its much faster after a hard reset. Its slows down as more files are placed in there. Sometimes (especially on the Universal) you can get a small reduction in the time by moving all the help files (htm and their relevant gifs/bmps/jpgs) to another folder (you could delete them, but then you would have to reinstall if you break something).
I think its the type of file that gets placed in there. If only software authors would stop loading the directory with squillions of little files, if only MS would set IE to use the SD card as the cache directory by default and if only various other things like ring tones, today plugins, etc could go somewhere else.
Decentralise, etc.
Thanks bbobeckyj for that program, I'll back my phone up tonight. So it's not just my phone that is slow
I understand where you're coming from ward, it's a shame that the device doesn't keep files in tidy places. This is the same for the Storage Card, there are folders created on there which have no files or stuff that never gets used!
Yeah. I keep finding folders called "FilesToBeDeleted". They're always empty.

PC software to read android phone to read deleted texts and others

with windows mobile on the Mogul, Touch Pro, and Touch Pro 2, I was able to use a program to read all sorts of data from my phone. Hacking it was easy as long as I had a guide telling me what was what. I'm surprise I didn't see a program that will let me browse through the phone in that manner. I don't just mean a file explorer. I'm talking about a full browser where I can check out the registry and EVERYTHING.
One useful application is to find deleted texts and save them on the computer.
try MyPhonExplorer free

Where are SMS files saved in Nokias?

So I'm trying to create a backup of my texts on my computer, and I found one method that looks promising: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16490860&postcount=29
The only problem is the location given: ( \Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Stores\DeviceStore ) does not work. Does anyone know where SMS files get saved in the phone? Specifically a Lumia 900?
Should I cross-post this in the Lumia section?
No, there's nothing device-specific about the SMS storage; that's all Microsoft code that is identical on all WP7 devices. I'm not sure why you think that just because you can't access that file, there's somewhere else that the SMS would be. Do you not realize that on a stock, non-rooted phone your apps have access to only a tiny portion of the filesystem? Unfortunately, I don't believe anybody has found a way to root a Lumia 900 (the 710s and some 800s can be), although we're working on it. I any case, it's not currently possible to buckup SMS on a Lumia 900 using an app. MS really screwed over WP7 users on the backup front.

How to backup developer unlocked WP7 with Win7x64 and the latest Zune version?

I'd like to know how to backup developer unlocked WP7 with Win7x64 computer and the latest Zune version?
I've now tried:
- WP7 Easy Updater -> didn't work. Gives me an error message and leads me to Microsoft's support site.
- Windows Phone 7 backup v.1.9 -> didn't work. Gives mw an error message "the input string was not given in the correct order..."
I've tried Zune4.7 dll for the later one -> same thing, didn't work
Is there a way to make a full backup of your unlocked/developer unlocked Windows Phone 7 with any (other) software? I'd need to replace the micro-SD card of my Dell Venue Pro from 32Gb to 64Gb and wouldn't like to loose the music I have in the isolated storages of some Marketplace apps. I've even tried Isolated Storage Spy tool but it doesn't allow to access to the isolated storages of Marketplace apps.
Any help is highly appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance!

I've just gone through the onerous process of trying to export my SMS messages from an original HTC Trophy (WP7.0) with Chevron unlock.
Things like SMSBackup don't work (target a higher version of Windows Phone, and hacking the xap manifest at best got the app deployed but not running). Backup programs like the ones you listed did nothing. Something called WPV App Data Backup at least connected and created a bunch of folders but they were all empty.
In the end (after literally years of on-and-off attempts) I gave up on the SMS messages and let Zune do its update. Turns out that Zune does a backup to "C:\Users\JohnCitizen\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update" (or your equivalent) before it applies any updates. It's not a FULL backup in the sense that I'd understand the term, but it includes the isolated storage of apps which seems to be your main concern.
If your phone is already up to date I'm not sure if there's a way to fake an update or force Zune to do a backup as if it were preparing for an update but that might be your best bet.
Side-note: the pleasant surprise was that I didn't need the backups anyway. I've applied 5 cumulative updates to bring the phone to WP7.10.7720 and it still has the SMS messages and app data (meaning I could apply the interop unlock and get my SMS messages out with SMSBackup after all!).

Thanks for the advice but the phone is already WP7.8862 so it cannot be updated anymore. But I've tried both of the aforementioned apps and neither of them seem to work
Another possibility I've been thinking is a sort of "blind copy" of micro-SD if that's possible if the backup of Marketplace apps (and their isolated storages) is not possible. Well, I'm willing to try just about everything to save the music that I have in my phone. It'd be really painstaking and time consuming to download all that music (once again) to my phone after replacing the micro-SD card.
Speaking about your phone, why haven't you installed a custom ROM to it? I've installed custom ROMs to my HTC 7 Pro (Dynamics 2.2) and to my Nokia Lumias (Lumiatrix, don't remember the version right now). And my LG Quantum I've unlocked with the registry code. Makes a life a whole lot easier. Too bad no-one has found a way to port a custom ROM to Dell Venue Pro since I already would've done it. Well, developer unlock will do then...

Originally because I wanted to backup/export my SMS messages. Now I've finally worked that out I don't really care about the phone. Windows Phone is a horrible pile of sh** compared to what Windows Mobile was, much less what Android is now, is so I have no desire to waste any more time on it.

Yeah, you're right. Android is much closer to Windows Mobile than Windows Phone is.
But the reason why Windows Phone and iPhone are so closed systems, is their information security.
Android is quite open system compared to those two aforementioned ones.
I do have some Android devices but I've still decided to stick with Windows Phone. It's the best (well at least for me) OS for business purposes.
Just looking for a Windows Phone 8.x device with the physical QWERTY and possiblity to jailbreak it...
Back to subject: I'd really appreciate if someone could give me a hint how to get those two already mentioned backup apps to work with the latest Zune version, WP7.8 & WIN7 x64.
RE: SMS BACKUP Application
i need SMS backup xap file for lumia 710 dev unlocked mobile.
software version 7.8, make: nokia.
i cannot flash or try interop unlock methods, i tried loading xap files by removing INTEROPSERVICE in capabilities, app loaded successfully, but raised exception when app is loaded n crashed.
please suggest if any registry/policy editing steps through windows phone device manager or if any steps...
Any help is highly appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance!
