Hi,
I've recently brought a Raphael and await it to arrive tomorrow...
Anyway, browsing the web I found the following cable and some info that this phone supports TV-out. Anyone familiar with this and knows if this cable could work with this phone? How's the movie-playback quality with TV-out?
Cable:

You shouldn't even have to buy that cable, though it is nice find. Yes it supports tv out you just have to buy a Video Ipod cable for something like 3 bucks and use the usb adapter that should come with the phone. You will also have to look around for a cab that will perform a register change to allow it to work.
Welcome to the world of the Rapheal now learn to earch the board for easy answers like this. It makes it easier for erybody.
Thanks for your reply.
I've heard about the iPod cable "hack", but my question is concerning this particular cable... and since I didn't find any information about it (through a search) I thought I could make a new post...
Anyway, thanks
that doesnt look like it uses htc's video out pins. i really doubt it would work. the "hack" is just to change state in the registry with the ipod cable to launch the tv easy program selecting thingy since the ipod cable doesnt change the system state settings. it still works without it. i would look on amazon for the ipod video cable because last time i looked it was for under $1, and also confirmed working. i think that cable you linked is for specific digital cameras that support video out over standard 5pin mini usb. htc has extra pins (the 5 data and 6 extra i believe, video and left and right audio like rca cables) and a trapezoidal plug to distinguish extusb.
What about the cable that's Mini USB on one end, and RED/WHITE/YELLOW for standard tv out on the other end? I've seen em online for sale. Wouldn't that be simpler?
You can be the first to try it and report back. My guess would be that HTC used different pins with in the usb plug.
I've brought the cable mentioned, I'll report back once I have it
tv out
Ok not sure as to what hack your referring to but i think this is it right here.
Nue made a program that does exactly what is mentioned above as far as the ipod cable or any other but here read for your self

Has anyone with a Revolution 3.6.13 rooted Sensation 4G (T-Mobile USA) tried this MHL adapter for $10.20 from monoprice.com and how is the quality? I'm in need of an MHL hookup but not exactly sure which to get.
pfx
Tried it on the resound, and would lose internet when connected. I keep meaning to pick up the official 15 pin HTC unit. Costs more, but you get what you pay for. If this is useless, please ignore..

Yeah those are the kinds of glitches I'm hoping to avoid, as having wifi dropout while it's connected would partly defeat the purpose. I found this one also on ebay which has the HDMI cable connected, so it only requires two separate pieces/cables, though I'm not sure if using my own HDMI cable might get better results.
Be careful. For example I'm in need of one too but I don't have HDMI, only DVI.
When using MHL with DVI, you only get a picture on the screen when it updates the screen. It's black the rest of the time unless scrolling, playing a movie, live wallpapers, etc.
So I'm a little SoL.
xhigh, not sure I get the point of your post.. are you saying your tv/monitor only has DVI input? I did mention HDMI specifically in my post, not DVI, so whatever DVI issues there may be aren't an issue.

So what is a recommended MHL adapter? Or are we really to spend $30+ on the HTC one?
Looking to be able to play videos (x264) over dlna / samba or whatever to hdmi. Preferably outputting sound through the analog jack still for now.
I took a chance on the Monoprice one, and just received it this morning.. I haven't had time to test it extensively yet, but here's my experience so far...
Pros:
I was able to connect to my 1080P hidef tv without any problems.. connected to HDMI-4, plugged the usb into the side of the tv, and was up and running in literally under 60 seconds. No reboot was needed.
Picture quality is not 100% perfect, but it's nearly so... much more than adequate for viewing movies, previewing photos from the camera, etc. Audio quality via HDMI was also extremely good.
I did *not* lose wifi while connected, as some others have reported. Wifi signal remained strong. I was able to connect via SMB and CIFS and stream music and video, though I haven't tested this extensively yet.
Cons:
I'm not sure if this is normal with MHL connectors, but while the adapter was powered via USB on the side of the tv, the 500mA coming out of the tv was not enough to provide a charge.. During the 30 minutes I played with it, there was a gradual discharge of the phone, so it's not able to keep up with the rate of discharge of the phone, though technically it should prolong the battery life since it is providing some power to the phone. (Technically, the USB power connection to the MHL is to power the HDMI signal, so maybe what I observed is perfectly normal). While plugged in via USB, Minimalistic Text showed a status of 'USB Charging' which was to be expected...
Next I tried plugging the power directly into AC and not the television's USB port.. Interestingly enough, Minimalistic Text again showed a status of 'USB Charging' even though it was plugged into mains power, so it must have something to do with the fact that the mini-USB end of the AC charger isn't being plugged directly into the phone, but through the MHL dongle instead. In any case, and also interesting, the phone was again discharging faster than it accepted charge from AC, but it seemed to be a slower discharge than when plugged into the tv's USB port...
So, all in all, given my intended use which for now is mainly going to be for previewing photos, working with some documents via bluetooth keyboard, and playing P90 and Tapout workout videos, I think it's well worth the price.
If anyone can comment on the USB charging and discharge rates on OEM MHL adapters, that would be helpful.. Is it normal that the phone discharges while connected to MHL, even though it's in a charging state? If so, then I'm more than happy with the one I got from monoprice.. If, however, OEM units do actually build charge while connected, then I might consider one down the road if I find I have more elaborate requirements than I do now...
Offtopic, can anyone recommend good affordable bluetooth keyboards for our phones?
Thanks. That definitely helps! My goal is to play hours of video through CIFS/SMB/DLNA (x264), so it sounds like power will definitely be an issue.
Is MHL/HDMI purely a clone of the phone's screen or what? Wondering if there's any apps out there that can have the phone function as a remote / file navigator, and have video output only go through hdmi.
MHL is a clone of the phone's screen, so you can use ES File Explorer to navigate your CIFS shares, touch your video file, select the appropriate viewer, and it will stream and clone to the tv..
I tried it and it works great
but, buy it in dx
I received my monoprice MHL adapter, plugged the hdmi cable into it, plugged the power into it and plugged it into my phone. the phone shows HDMI hooked up and my monitor will alternate between showing whats on the phone and going to a white fuzzy screen then back to mirrored than fuzzy every couple of seconds.
I plugged my brothers sensation in and it works fine so I doubt it's the adapter, he is rooted running a custom ROM.
I am unlocked and rooted but running stock rom, T-Mobile USA version.
So I went into T-Mobile and asked about this issue, they didn't know, they called tech support who in turn told them to call HTC. They gave me HTCs number, I called and explained what was going on, HTC tells me the phone ISN'T MHL compatible, that we're supposed to use the media link dongle, which costs about $100.
He suggested I try just a straight up micro hdmi cable to my tv instead.
So an older phone (sensation) has the ability, but this new high tech, best of the bunch phone can't do it, what a bunch of ****.
Edit: OK, I figured out the issue, I was running an HDMI to VGA cable to my monitor, since the monitor is a VGA connection. I then went ahead and hooked it up to another monitor that had a straight HDMI connection and it worked perfect, so VGA HDMI cable no good, straight up hdmi to hdmi works great!
Edit 2: So I just tried the MHL adapter again with the vga HDMI cable, and now it works. It's like it needed one cable to make it work and now it will work with the other, nothing changed except that I tried it another TV.
a HDMI to VGA cable? as long as you dont have special equipment this cable can't be used for anything HDMI is a completly digital standard. DVI is digital + analog so a VGA - DVI adapter is possible, but HDMI to analog is without special hardware impossible.

You are correct sir, my bad, it is a DVI cable. So just replace VGA with DVI in my first and second post.
The cable I have is this one.
Thanks.
Okay. Could be a problem with HDCP.

I'n having this issue too.. still unresolved
My MHL came in 2 days back. Hooking the phone up keeps alternating between what's on the phone and the white noise screen. I have a straightup HDMI cable going from the MHL to my LCD TV.
Any suggestions are welcome

OK, I noticed if i just go and hook up my cable to the mhl the problem comes back, the solution is to hook everything up to the phone, then reboot the phone and the problem will be gone. One other thing is make sure you have your media volume turned up as it affects sound output, so if your media volume is muted, it will also be muted or whatever volume the phone is set at. I thought I was nuts when there wasn't any sound coming from my stereo until I realized that I had my volume all the way down.
DO the reboot thing and it should work no problems, also, our phones don't need to be plugged in to your power cord to use the MHL, so I'm wondering if the MHL adapter is even necessary for us if we can live without the power cord needing to be attached.

Thanks.. Will try and circle back..
Re: The power cord, not sure if it's 'needed' but I'm guessing without external power the phone wouldn't last an hour.
Seperate issue - When I last tried, I was playing around with it and the phone heated to a point it was slightly uncomfy holding the phone.

Yup, without the external battery going to the phone it will drain dramatically. I also noticed the heating issue you mentioned.

Update: So I tried hooking up all the cables to my phone, restarted the phone and then plugged it into the TV. It still gives me same results unfortunately. I get a display but it keeps going away every few seconds and the white noise screen appears.
What a buzzkill... My old phone (Sensation) was flawless in this respect
I bought a pioneer x8500 stereo for my car with an HDMI output. I purchased what looks like an official MHL adapter on Amazon for $28. Each time I plug the cable into the Pioneer I completely lose all mobile data, I cannot even make or receive phone calls and have a circle with a line through it in the notification bar. I can see my screen on the headunit and do everything, even use Wi-fi but no mobile data, which is really important! When I unplug it I get it all back. I tried the MHL on a TV using the HDMI and I can see the screen same as on the pioneer but still no network until I unplug it.
I have a SCH-i545 rooted S4 running 4.3. Kernel 3.4.0. SE for Android status is enforcing. I had the verizon antivirus installed but removed it. I don't know if its something on my phone preventing the connections or the adapter is defective.
I have tried everything I can think of, even wrapping the adapter in tinfoil but nothing helps. I have a Garmin external GPS plugged in below the stereo and the satellite loses its signal when this is plugged in. It may be a coincidence but I have never had that happen before.

I have the red cord if that makes sense. (It was cheaper and was supposed to work but never did). You have the bpx looking one correct? Little white/red/whatever. Do you plug the power in on it? Try switching how you plug it into power.. i.e first plug in adapter count to 10 or 20 then phone. Or plug in all at oonce and radio last.. Just throwing things out there that i've seen on reviews from otherbuyers of em

I bought a genuine Samsung adapter and it was heavier and packaged different than the samsung one that I sent back to Amazon, it works fine now. It even charges my phone using a USB cable plugged into a cigarette lighter adapter. My other car adapter kept making the HDMI cutout and I think it just didn't have enough power. I am still trying to learn and get tasker to work properly and so far I am able to start up my music player and then launch Waze on the phone so I have GPS and Music on the big screen. I also use screenstandby so the phone screen saves power. On the radio side I have Mixtrax working with a 32GB mircosd card plugged into a USB stick, (that took a while to figure out because it DOES NOT work with apple) an 16GB SD card with Movies, my160GB Ipod with songs, Audiobooks and Mixtrax EZ, a DVD in the player and my phone for pandora via bluetooth but when I use Pandora I have to reconnect AVliberator. I wish I could have Waze working from my phone and my Ipod music player through the speakers. As soon as I get it all working perfectly I am going to do a video tutorial for those that had my same issues but no where to figure out how to solve them. I have a parking brake bypass switch installed that I have to click everytime I launch the phone so I can view the screen.
Hi
I have been having this issue for sometime now. I connect my Nexus to my laptop using the USB cable, and most of the time the screen starts acting up. Touch calibration is all wrong. When i click something, the actual button that is clicked is totally a different one. And sometimes it activates stuff on its own.
I have tried several stuff I found on google. Some said it had something to do with my home electricity not being grounded. I checked. It is grounded. Tried everything from flashing new roms to freshly starting from stock! Nothing seems to work!
Its like this thing have a mind of its own
Hi, if you use stock wall adapter, it's working correctly? Usually that is some kind bad electricity problem or that device where you plugged it causes problems.
Check usb cable. If it's not happening on LG cable and LG wall charger than it's your usb to pc cable problem
PS check other usb port and cable
