Connecting to O2 Web via a Mobile Phone - General Questions and Answers

Hi
I'm trying to connect my MIO Digiwalker A701 to 02 web but instead of using the GPRS connectivity of the PDA i want to connect using my Nokia mobile phone. I have sync'ed the devices together and can connect to the nokia however the PDA is asking me to enter a number to dial. I've tried dialling my normal connection of mobile.o2.co.uk but this is unsuccessful. Could anyone help me as to the number i need to dial in order to get the PDA browsing the internet via my phone?
(i realise this may sound like a silly way of doing it but i'm trying to test different connection methods as i don't always come across the same ones day to day)
Any help greatfully appriciated.

hmm...guess nobody cared. :\

when you are connected to activesync using bluetooth then you can surf on the internet unless your firewall is set to block it or you disabled the option in activesync on the pc
Thx..

How to use Wizard as dial-up modem?

Is it possible?
I believe so, there are a few programs that will help you out. The 8125 ships with Cingular’s "wireless modem driver".
Would that be on the OEM CD? Also, how do you use it?
If you are using WM6 just start Internet Sharing ...and active sync will automaticaly configure your device as a modem (no driver neded)
If you are using WM5 start Modem Link and use attached files (contains instructions too)
...but will AOL recongnize it as a modem and allow me to connect (dial-up) using the cell phone line instead of my land line?
Maybe, but I doubt it. Your best performance senario would be to use the instructions posted above for establishing a connection to the internet then setting up AOL to use a TCP/IP (Network) connection instead of Dialup. It's been more than a coupl of versions since I've used AOL, but it should be somewhere in the connection settings.
sync up to active sync and then open programs on ur phone then modem link..pretty simple..
try to use Internet Sharing, Good Tool
ya WM5 uses DUN so you will need to activate modem link and have the drivers ready. then you have to create a proper DUN connection
WM6 is hella easy. just activate internet sharing and plug it in. It works as a PAN (like a network adapter) so all you have to do is open a browser after it's plugged in.
AOL will work for both. However it works different for each one. if you use WM5, there is an actual modem that AOL can select. It's called HTC USB modem. You can also setup AOL to use the existing TCP/IP connection. This is how you would do it if you are using WM as well.

I used the above drivers, with wm5 on my 8125 and I'm able to use my phone for Laptop internet access through a USB connection.
This works great.
Only problem is that now, after installing the drivers, when I plug in my device active sync does not communicate with the phone....

Edit:
Nevermind (light-bulb pops into mind as he realizes how to turn "modem link-off" from 8125 menu...

What about if I want to send a fax from either the phone or my computer? How can I dial to remote fax machine?
Thanks for help.
Faxing is so eighties!
Anything that can be faxed, can be scanned!
Anything you can do through a web browser, theoritically can be done, I have never done a search for fax software for WM5, it seems like technologies like the Wizard are on the opposite end of the spectrum from something like the telegraph or fax machine

I have Cingular, and I was told that you have to have a data plan in order to use the phone as a FAX machine. In other words, it's cheaper to use a FAX service.

Well, I am not going to argue the evolution of technologies. In fact, fax is still a tool widely used in today's business - I am sure a fax number shows on everyone's business card.
Staying on topic, the point is whether we can utilize a wizard for a modem to modem dial.
LONG time reader, rare poster! I've been searching for my issue here, but just can't seam to find it.
I see a LOT of posts that WM6 needs no drivers to be used as a modem. Since I've flashed my 8125 to WM6 I have not been able to use it as a modem, BECAUSE it's looking for drivers. I have no internet connection at home (because of a ghetto apartment complex and REALLY old phone lines). I can active sync my phone with no problems, but when I activate Internet Sharing, my computer recognizes an 'unknown device' and doesn't find any native drivers. My goal for this evening is to uninstall the old modem setup that I had pre WM6, in case that is causing any issues. If this doesn't work, does anyone have other ideas? (FYI - running xp pro)
Internet shareing won't go to internet
I am using internet sharing but I still can't connect to internet. Any change or setup on browser? I am using firefox.

Is this also true for a DIAL-UP modem connection? I think this one only works for wifi/GPRS/UMTS etc.... connnections?

PDA as modem - msn wouldn't login

Hi!
I know this is a question is on the edge of what this forum and web-site is about, but let me explain my problem and see if anyone have any tips
I work with PDAs of all types, and the problem is not related to brand, if it is Windows Mobile 5 or 6 (Modem Link vs Internet Sharing, even tested Modem Link on a WM6 device since I get pre-samples) or tele-operator.
At home I haven't got Internet via ADSL/Broadband - I have to use a PDA as modem to surf on the internet. I have one hotmail-account and one Yahoo-account. When I try to login, it seems to login - shows contacts briefly - loads the icons in the MSN application (MSN Windows Live Messenger 8.1) - and the disconnects - starts to reconnect, and the same happens again.
I use Activesync 4.5, but have used 4.2 which I "trust" (if that is possible) more. Have disabled "Allow USB Connections". I just thought of using USB Killer to force serial communication - I will get back to the result of this..
I have installed AVG Anti-virus (free personal edition), Spyware Doctor and SpyBot. Tried to disable these and make changes to internal Windows Firewall. Without success..
At work my PC is connected to internet via ADSL and everything works, well okay. Sometimes MSN freezes, but no login problems. I have a theory about it has something to do with the IP the PDA gets from the tele-network, but tried the APN for public IP-address..no success.
Have anyone experienced problems like me when using PDA as modem ? As I use MSN for my job I would be very happy to get tips!
a bit confusing "At work my PC is connected to internet via ADSL and everything works, well okay. "
is this pda related? are you saying that your normal pc with a normal network is ok with msn?
or are you connecting your pda to that pc as well
are you using activesync to try to get your pda to connect to your pc at homes network or other other way around?
your phone isp can block all ports they want which could result in msn issues of cause then it would be both on the pda and the pc

when you try to use internet sharing on your ppc at home, are you able to browse web sites/read mail on the home pc ?
I am using a laptop at work, which I bring with me back home.
At work I connect to internet via ADSL, not using PDA there. MSN have no (not login problems) problems at work.
At home I usually disable "Allow USB Connections" in Activesync, connect PDA to laptop via USB cable, wait a bit - then use Internet Sharing to connect via the GPRS connection I have configured on the PDA.
It works just fine to surf, send e-mails, etc. But, when I start MSN on laptop - it starts the handshake-process, it seems to login - loads the sidebar icons in MSN and "the connection is lost" (msn) - I can still surf on the internet. MSN keeps reconnecting.. login..closes the connection. etc. at the end..after minutes or many hours it will log me in.
I will try some brand new devices tonight as modem. By the way, switching from RNDIS communication to Serial - between laptop and PDA didn't help.
Any help appreciated!
Small update..
Yesterday I tried a brand new unknown unofficial WM6 device as modem. Configured GPRS, used Internet Sharing and it logged on to msn without any trouble. I will test it more before I come to any conclution if this just was one-time-luck or..

Using VOX as External MODEM

Hi I am a newbie and purchased the phone a week ago. I am a heavy user of Symbian phone and is new to the windows smartphone.
Now while connecting Internet on PC through my VOX as modem I am facing problem. The manual is also not very elaborate about the same. Will somebody expalin explain in details the process to be followed. Please guide both using VOX as USB modem as also BT PAN modem.
For information I am from INDIA and is a subscriber of BSNL postpaid unlimited GPRS.
Thanks.
you dont need to connect vox as a modem.
just use the internet connection sharing and hook up to your PC using the miniUSB cable and thats it.
It works as a charm. No modem drivers no initialisation commands, no crap at all. Just hook up and use.
ain't that easy ?
not able to us internet with USB
i m facing the same issue., the GPRS works fine on mobile but when connected to PC using the USB, i get the error stating that limited connectivity....can u help me...when tried the service providers help line, they say that need to use VOX as external modem. I m sure that those guys are pretty intelligent greeks
Can u help me please
m using Airtel GPRS and based in DElhi India
even I am a airtel subscriber and it works perfectly in my Vox.
The internet connection sharing is flawless and perfect.
Dont even try asking the service providers helpline. They are pretty much useless.
If you get a limited connectivity error then its definitely because of a weak signal in your area. Try it at a place where you have strong connection and it will work like a charm....
Thanks to both prajith and lokeshmudgal.
After going through various forums etc I found out the following which I want to share with you all.
The concept of using phone as a external modem have been stopped by Microsoft to make the things easier. They have instead given a new option of internet dharing to make the thing user friendly. I was able to connect internet in my PC through internet sharing option of the phone but the speed is very slow in comparison to my nokia / sony ericsson etc. Moreover trying to connect net through bluetooth PAN is more difficult.
In fact after using symbian s60 3rd ediition and win mobile 6 I find that browsing is faster in VOX but when using this for internet sharing / modem the browsing is better in Symbian.
A detailed report can bbe found here. Just go through and give your opinion.

Thanks
Hey dude, Thanks...Infact mine VOX was up and running fine at my Desktop... Only that the Laptop had some issue.. Although as for the internet speed, i find that i m getting a pretty fair one..
thanks
