HTC Herald vs. HTC Touch - General Topics

Hi guys!
Sorry for opening such a stupid thread, but I really can't decide which device I'd prefer.
Today I'm going to get a new phone, because I had problems with my VPA Compact II from vodafone. Right now I am looking at the VPA Compact IV and the HTC Touch. I'd like to get my hands on another PPC with UMTS, but the company where my dad works, doesn't allow UMTS phones.
I have to decide very quick.
I heard, that many Touch users are having somthing like dust under their screens. Has the Herald different problems?!
If you had the choice between the Touch and the Herald. Which pocket pc would you choose?
Please help me, because I don't see any differences or pro and cons between these phones except the fact, that the touch is much smaller.
What about the headset?
Guys, please don't let me suffer and try to help me in my decision.
Thanks, Vi

Herald has a keyboard. Also there is a touch flo ROM avaliable for the Herald.

I had the same difficult decision as you not too long ago. I went with the Herald because of the keyboard. It was actually between a Touch, Herald or iPhone. I didnt like the iPhone because it couldnt really do much, no customization or anything, its basically a toy first, a phone and PDA second.
The Touch is awesome but I definitely wanted the keyboard.
All in all I'm glad I got the Herald and the new Touchflo ROMs make this thing everything the Touch is but better, in my opinion.
So basically, would you rather go for slimness(Touch), or better productivity, ease of use etc.(Herald)?

Thanks for your posts and opinions! I chose the touch because I noticed that I didn't use the keyboard of my wizard too often. I think I'm going to have fun with PocketCM Keyboard
I hope I made a good decision.
Thanks again,
Vi

In holland a lot of the pda phones are cheaper on a business contract, but only a company can get such a contract of course. Maybe it's the same in Germany and he's taking that route...

Nice device, now sod off

Is it me or is this device just not all that popular?
I say this because if you look at the Diamond forum, that's busting with activity, and yet for some reason, the Raphael, which I fooking love I might add (frankly, if it doesn't have an integrated keyboard, it just doesn't win for me) - is just not attracting much attention.
I guess there's the fact it's a premium to the Diamond, and it's a bit fatter, but honestly, now that it's out, who here would still choose the diamond over it?

Nope aint gonna happen. Methinks alot of the users who trawl endlessly from device to device have missed this in favour of the diamond. I prefer it to be a premium device with a less commercial crowd anyways, makes me enjoy my device a bit more if not many people have it. AND ofcourse, no keyboard means no go for me also.
Well the Diamond has been around a bit longer.
Since I leave my phone on my desk at work, most of my workmates have seen the Pro now. Only two had ever heard of HTC before. (Being in Finland, Nokia is pretty much what everyone has) But all asked more about it, and found it interesting. Even more so when I slid out the keyboard and showed that you can use the stylus to transcribe, then the real interest came about.
The Pro when not in use, just looks like a fat phone, and that scares some people. (Even though it is thinner than the N95 I upgraded from.)
Plus, I feel that the Diamond got a lot more push than the Pro seems to have done.
Luckily some apps on the Diamond do in fact work on the Pro, so not all is lost. But it is a shame that we have to look at two different forums. If the apps/hacks/tweaks work on both, then I think a lot more cross linking should be done!
I think the Diamond is the more available of the two at the moment (O2 UK don't have it) and a lot of people wanting to upgrade went there because this phone wasn't availbale.
On the keyboard ground though, the Kaiser was massively popular over the Polaris. Although, I'll be sticking with HW Keyboard devices from now on.

Have both Diamond and pro in our house
I like the diamond, but wife likes the pro, she does a lot more txt than me.
I think it's a case of the Diamond being around longer and the fact that in general it uses the same hardware. Therefore the questions that people ask are more likely to have been asked and answered on the diamond forum, than on here.

WTF! you just made the Pro a girly phone!
yeah, so we have our own little niche for now... sod the diamond, the Raphael is definitely superior, though AT&T's decision for the keyboard layout is crap
Also keep in mind that the touch pro is pretty much non-existent in the US. The diamond was just released here in the US with sprint, and the US 3G gsm version was also recently released, that's why you have so much interest. Once the touch pro is released by at&t you will see this forum explode with activity. The same thing happened last year when the kaiser was first released, and then when the tilt was released by at&t.

allot of my frined got the diamond and only me and a friend have the touch pro out of the 2 id say ours is better
my friend is on 02 and hes got one so 02 are selling them in the uk
tbh from day one i flashed the rom to romeos 1.05 and did a few little things to personalise it and its been really good so far my last handset was a kaiser and there are some things i miss from the the full screen tilt for instance should have been on this phone then it would have been perfect maybe thats just me spending a year with my kaiser (my girlfriend still thinks he kaiser is better) the t3d stuff took some getting used to but think the touch pro is a awesome handset
I know this is an international board, but I think once providers in the US start releasing it I expect a lot more activity in here.
I'm also surprised by the lack of action on the Raphael forum.
I've owned the Diamond (which is much more sexier than the Raphael). But I upgraded to the Raphael as soon as it became available because of the cardslot and more memory. I don't txt that much so the keyboard isn't that important to me (but nice to have )
Guess the Diamond is more popular at the moment. Or al lot of the Diamond owners are saving to upgrade to the Raphael
I think the Touch Pro will become more popular in time, but now maybe it's to expensive for some people. There are also a lot of people who purchased the Diamond and later on they discovered that the Touch Pro was coming out, one colleague of mine regrets that he has bought the Diamond.
but like Olipro said Nice device, now sod off
If I get my hands on one, and this is my local forum (so to speak) I would rather it was quieter. Athena Elf and to some extent Hermes were great (Hermes ws just a bit too big) but Kaiser was just too huge. And I used to spend a lot of time in the Diamond forums whe it first came out, but it instantly filled wth noobs (I know we all wer once) when it was released on the networks. Then I left because it went from interesting discussion about the device to problem solving.
I think the Pro is just too expensive to become insanely popular in a Diamond-esque way. In a similar way to the Athena, its for a pretty specifc user.
For people who dont mind the bulk but are just general users, they can get a kaiser for about £150 on ebay, or £200 new. Or if theyre a general user, but wnt small and thin, they can get a Diamond (£250) so £500 plus for this is a bit unjustifiable until prices drop...
So if I get one I hope it stays small like it is now, and with very knowledgable people rather than noobs.
Rory
Even the Touch Pro isnt released everywhere. In germany the Vario IV is in stock since today. I think in a few weeks this forum wil be much more popular.
Well I looked at the Diamond, but I'm glad I decided to hang out for the TP as it's clearly worth the wait IMO I think give it a few more months and there will be a lot more members posting here
I have also moved from diamond to pro, becuase of more memory and sd card + keyboard. But some reason, the only thing that bothers me , some roms on diamond are extremely fast..But on pro with all the custom roms I have used , for example programs scrolling and opera scrolling is still slow.
I just wish there is a bit more custom roms here,,,so that with competition , the roms will get better.
I believe(not a fact) the diamond people are holding out for the HTC touch HD which also just got the US FCC seal of approval and its due at the end of october. YAY.
I was originally going to get the HTC Touch pro but it was too expensive + there is a keyborad, which i dam not too fond of; then i saw a great deal on the diamond and plummet. So i sold off my HTC TOuch cruise for the price of the diamond, i am waiting patiently to get the HD.

Every No Keyboard Device is followed by a Keyboard one, usually. *Fingers crossed*

Help me pick new smartphone!

Right now I have a T-Mobile dash, known as HTC Excalibur. I do llike the phone, however I have had it for three years and I just found out that the USB port on the phone looses contact and makes the phone difficult to charge.
I want to get another HTC smartphone running Windows Mobile, with Querty Keyboard. The phone must be able to sync to ms Outlook, and read/edit ms Word & Excel files. Also the phone MUST run off a SIM card.
Just by looking around this site, phones which come to my mind are; Blue Angel, Wizard, Hermes, Herald, Kaiser, Titan, Raphael, Wings...
I was looking around and I can get HTC Wizard for $140 on ebay. Is the wizard a good phone or should I look elsewhere? I dont want to spend more than $150...
I appreciate any inoput...
Don't get a Wizard at all, get at least a Tytn or Tytn II.

So far I am very happy with it...
Let us know how u like the G1 3G? I'm waiting on the tmob Touch Pro2 due in July...
Love my G1, even more so with the custom ROMs available as it has made the mobile much more complete. When it was originally released it felt rushed but everyone knew it had potential to improve and grow, due to the nature of Android - And boy has it done that!
Everything has improved from responsiveness, battery life, quality applications, louder external and internal volume for calls, A2DP support for Bluetooth stereo headsets, video recording, vastly improved camera software and more. The only thing that's missing (which is currently being developed) is Bluetooth OBEX support so users can finally send and receive files via Bluetooth.
As soon as that's implemented it will be the most complete smartphone I've ever used.

Shindude,
Is a physical keyboard important?
If it's not, I suggest going for the Touch HD or Touch Diamond 2 (if screen size is not important). Otherwise, go for the Touch PRO 2 for the keyboard.
Cheers.
No a physical keyboard is not required but how about the iphone what do you suggest? I really like what you can do with it but does HTC have that kind of customization?
TC,
I would never suggest the iPhone. And yes, WinMo has endless amounts of customization to suit your needs. The only catch? You got to do it yourself cause no one is going to do it for you. You can load up custom ROMs and everything, but at the end of the day, it is up to you to tailor how you want your WinMo to look and feel.
If you feel like you are not up to the amount of work needed to fine-tune WinMo devices, only then would I say get the iPhone.
Cheers.
^the X1 Xperia is a Windows Mobile 6.1 device, so he should already be familiar with it.
I recommend the Diamond2 or Touch Pro 2 (keyboard), then you still also have xda support!

Galaxys,
That's true. But he may not have known that he could flash new ROMs and customize the phone to a point of lunacy.
Cheers.
Cool...Yes, flashing is always the best fun here on xda!
I would recommend:
Touch Pro 2 if you need a buissness oriented device
Diamond 2 or Tosh TGO if you want a multimedia oriented device
No points for iphoney...
And if it´s not an HTC it will not have the great support form this great site!
you can "jailbreak" an Iphone however, it keeps getting hastled by Apple- its a chicken and egg situation. If you want to be able to do everything you are allowed to do properly on an Iphone then you shouldn't jailbreak it. What it does then, it does very well - but its limited. Jailbreaking means it can do a lot more, nearly as much as as WinMob device but its gets risky using online stuff as Apple try to restrict jailbroken phones.
Its kind of like the old Xbox, you could hack it but MS would discover ways to detect it and try to disable your online ability, the hackers would then get round that fix, and then MS get around that hack .... rinse, repeat.
I wont recommend a particular WinMob device as you dont seem to have decided. You need to decide, easy to use, simple, glossy Iponey or techno savvy Winmob device. Ask yourself, what did you use on the X1? Does an Iponey have that? What do you think you need that you didn't have? Do you think a Winmob or Iphone would cover that extra ability?

Upgrade from VOX- Move to PPC or Smartphone ?

I am using my VOX for almost one and half years and I am feeling like upgrading to a more recent product. Since many of you are having a wide experience of using PPC I would request you to suggest my next upgrade as to whether to go for a PPC or remain in smartphone. My thinkings/doubts apprehensions are as follows:
1) I am being allured by Touch varieties of WINMO, the reason being, bigger screens, smart looks and above all the wide availability of softwares both in numbers as well as variety. In fact I love to install various apps to my phones and enjoy fiddling with them.
2)UI or Touch Operation : Though I have recently purchased a Nokia 5800 and I have quite well adapted myself fully on Symbian touch screens. I would like to know what are the advices/experiences of actual users in WINMO. By the way the TouchFlow3D/2D attracts me very much and I like the kinetic scrolling and gesture control of WINMO devices.
3)Although it is pretty sure that I will go for HTC (of course due to this huge and unique support of XDA-DEVELOPERS) is there any other practically viable alternative?
4)The battery lives of WINMOs are generally poorer than symbian etc. What about battery lives of PPC in comparison to Smartphone (WinMOs)?
Thanks
Hey
I can't answer all your questions, but here are my 2 cents:
For battery life the s710 is awesome. Online reviews of other phones will tell you what to expect from a new phone, you'll have to do the research.
Personally, I wanted my phone to be a PHONE with internet, etc on the side.....rather than a mini-internet browser with some phone functionality on the side (if you see what I mean), which is why I went for an s710.
The next best option I see is this, and I was considering this for myself at one point: http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=161302
Basically I think you'll have to decide what you want out of the phone. Do you want to be fiddling with a stylus to send texts? Ive been told touchscreens won't work out if its drizzling outside and specks of water are splashing on the screen. Touchscreen is cool, it's just not as precise as a keypad.
There are loads of advantages to PPC's (many of which you know). You'll just have to figure out what suits you personally.
(also there's no alternative to doing the leg work.....if you want to find the best deal out there, you'll have to do the research).
Oh and also, if you find something cool let me know.....
What about the HTC Hero?

Hero is a Android phone which I am interested in. I will only restrict my choice within WinMO.
I'm going to "upgrade" in 2 months. I'm going for the Touch Pro 2.
It has WM 6.1 pro with a free upgrade from HTC to 6.5, the big keyboard, high res screen (480*800).
Further it has 3G, GPS.
To me it looks like a kick-ass phone. I'm saving up money for it right now

Have Wizard 8125, time for a new phone...

I have an HTC Wizard 8125 and really like it. If I could easily upgrade from the WM 5 and control the font size when texting (reading and writing) and other screens, I would keep it. Will any of the phones out now do these things? This is not a work phone and I'm not a game player if that helps. Just a lot of email, internet and texting. Any suggestions for my next phone?
The best hardware keyboard device on this days is Rhodium
Definitely a great device for what you need
That's kinda pricey. anything in the $200 range?
Raphael/Touch Pro/Fuze on eBay.
I bought 2 Brand new ones off eBay for only $350 ($175 Each). Had to unlock them myself, but that wasn't a big deal.
They aren't TOO expensive. You might find a few cheap ones.

maybe get a kaiser they are pretty cheap.
HTC Universal.
fuzes are horrible phones, i'd rather use a wallaby.
i have a kaiser, it's more functional in android than it is in WM.
i'd say go with a uni or athena. athena would be fun.
on second thought i should add more details.
640x480 vs 320x240
3.6" screen vs 2.8"
wifi/bluetooth/fullsized SDHC and 520mhz vs 200mhz.
I really love my uni. to the point of breaking one and buying another, despite having..a large amount of backup phones. the os runs in 320x240 so it's..better for fingertyping+large text.

in my experiance, they are. but hey i'd still be using wm2003 so what could i know right =D
wizard was my second. until its screen met with the hard wood floor of sonystyle.
also, uni has a 3.5 stereo jack. which is quite handy comapred to a 2.5/extusb on newer phones.
For a keyboard device you should consider & try the Rhodium!
So after looking at these, I have to admit I really like the Rhodium. I see one on ebay for $357. But it is TMobile and I am on Cincinnati Bell. Is it easy to unlock? I had to unlock my Wizard as it was from Cingular. The ad says that the 3g will only work on TMobile. Think that is true? or can that be hacked? Is that the right term?
if its unlocked you can use it personaly i have a wizard (3g) running WM6.5 and if you do its text and email and that stuff theres not much point in upgradeing unless you want to start doing more stuff

You can get the phone sim-unlocked for $10-15 through various online services, and then you can use it on CB just fine, they share the same 3G frequencies as T-Mobile. The ad just said "T-Mo only" because you can't use AT&T's 3G bands with it (you'd need the Tilt2 version of the Rhodium). So, just make sure the ones you're looking at online are the T-Mobile version, which are pretty easy to spot
I started off with Cingular 8125 too, and would still be using it if I hadn't lost it this past fall I went straight for the Tmo TP2, and have been extremely pleased with it.
Now, having said all that...before you spend any money I'd be sure to take some time searching the Wizard boards here to see if there's any way to do what you're looking for...I know at the very least that text size in SMS can be altered by using 3rd-party SMS clients. And, I know it's possible to get a WM 6.1 ROM onto the wizard, which might open up more options for you as well.
