Hello; I have a Qtek-8300 since a few days ago, but have a lot of experience with PocketPC because of my Ipaq 4150.
I have some questions about the WM5.0 and ActiveSync:
1- Is it possible to establish an order in the preferred connection method to internet? I would like to set: first: ActiveSync; second: Wi-Fi; Third: GPRS. Presently, when I have both GPRS and Wi-Fi, I don't know which one is being used !! Is it a way to discover if I'm using GPRS or Wi-Fi on a given moment?
2- I'm seeing several different icons about GPRS, at different times, but with the phone in stand by (not being used in any way): a) the signal indicator to the right sometimes has a "G"; b) Sometimes in the middle I have a solid triangle (according to the manual means 'roaming'), and sometimes that triangle has also a small "G". Is this correct? Why are the signaling changing?
3- Is it possible to sync the "notes" items of Outlook?
Also, is it possible to sync files under "My Documents"?
4- In ActiveSync I can't access to the option "Program" (it is grayed out); I think that is the way to set if I want to sync continually or manually (like when I sync my PocketPC). Or a SmartPhone is allways synced??
5- I don't fuly understand why incoming calls are not found on my contacts database, since it is fully loaded; perhaps it is because of a local numbering issue. Is it possible to set the number of digits (right-to-left) that WM will use to report the name of the incoming caller? I think that if I set this number to about 6 digits, my contacts will be found.
Thank you very much for your help!

Maybe the triangle (i haven't seen it yet) is a roaming between local operators (ie if your operators gprs signal isn't high enough or has no coverage, they allow you to use another operators gprs with(or without) extra charge). The big G means availability of gprs (or big E availability of edge) and little g (or e) on the right means you are using it ..

Yes - look for "smartphone notes 2.0" at smartphone.net

have you set the phone numbers in ur database (outlook) in the form of:
+44-xxx-xxxxxx ? In outlook you should use the country code (it adds automatically the +44 or whatever). I have over a 1000 numbers set as country code, area code, number, and they are all recognised just fine.
Try with a couple of numbers - if it works, then I gues u got some work to do .... :lol:
Hope I helped
Thank you very much for your help, muppet_65.
I'm now trying SmartphoneNotes; installed fine, and sync ok with my Outlook. Very nice solution.
Respect to the problem finding the numbers in the contacts database: yes, the probem is that there is something weird in Argentina's numbering system: when you dial a cell number, it is (xxx) 15+6digitNumber. But when you receive a call from it, the CallerID is (xxx)+6digitNumber, without the "15".
The only solution I see is to configure (registry?) the number of digits WM uses to report the name of the caller. If I can set it to 6 digits, it would work fine (in most of the cases, at least).
Thank you again.
Anyone with some help on the GPRS/WIFI issue? How can I set the preferred internet access? I don't want to use GPRS if WiFi is available...
I have upgraded a cingular branded 2125 to the imate ROM, i-mate_SP5_WWE_2.5.331.2.zip. After fixing the header file, the rom loaded easily. There has been a significant performance improvement over the stock cingular ROM. My issue is with push mail. I feel like I must be missing something. I have enabled the service on the comm manager, set active sync to get mail as it arrives, but alas, it doesn't work. The only way to get the mail is to manually initialize it or schedule it to retrieve every x minutes.
I have a Wizard which I have enabled AKU and it works like a charm.
I was trying to set up this phone for a co-worker...
Any thoughts on what to look for on this Faraday? I'm stumped.
If Direct Push is enabled on your co-worker's device, and Direct Push is working on your device, it is most likely an issue with the Exchange Server settings. There are a few things I can think of.
1. Is your co-worker on the same carrier as you? In the Global Settings, I believe there must be a Mobile Service configured for each carrier.
2. In Active Directory, Up-To-Date Notifications must be enabled on the Exchange Features tab of the user profile for your co-worker.
If you have the ability to watch active TCP/IP connections to your Exchange Server, check to see if your co-worker's device is maintaining a http/https connection.
If I think of anything else I'll post again.

Ooops - Scratch #1, I think that is only for SMTP and text message notifications, not Direct Push.
Thanks, but it is the same exchange server, just different email addresses.
Glad mine is working, but I'm stumped why I can't get his to. I was thinking of reflashing his phone, but everything else seems to work just fine...
I'm an ID10T...Thanks for suggestion #s 2+3...I'll check them this morning.
Cheers!
Hey all. I just wanted to give you a heads up. I started a thread on Hofo a day ago. There are actually two about this topic now.
Appearently Cingular had the wireless.cingular.com proxy set on IE. It's in the registry, not in the connection profile. The default connection profile is still wap.cingular without the proxy, but IE will use the proxy.
I assume they did this so that IE could access http://device.home/ the Media Net site, which you need the proxy to access. They did something else to make IE really work right with Media Net, so that's good, but you can't disable the proxy.
This has a few ramifications:
1) IE is slower due to the proxy.
2) The proxy may compress images.
3) You can't access the internet from IE using a Wifi card or if you change your access point to isp.cingular
I started deleting IE connection settings in the registry and managed to disable it. I screwed up the WAP settings in the process. So I have to isolate the registry setting(s) that are specific to this proxy.
It's something we should all do (disable the proxy.) You can still acess it by changing to the MediaNet connection profile should you want to later, but trust me you don't want the proxy set all of the time in IE.
Unfortunatley IE's settings don't have access to edit the proxy setting in IE, it's in the registry only. At least so far I haven't found a setting.
I'll keep you posted. My Treo 750 is appearently defective and I'm working on getting it swapped, so I'm going to be tied up with solving this for at least a day.
Here are two of the threads:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?p=8553147
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1085384
RF9, just like I posted on HowardForums, please keep us all posted.
Thanks!
I isolated it. To disable the cingular proxy setting in IE:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Internet Settings]
The default setting (that uses the proxy) is:
"EnableAutoDetect"=dword:00000000
Change it to:
"EnableAutoDetect"=dword:00000001
Or simply delete it. It's more of the fact that if it's there and =0 it's used. if it's missing it's not used. But changing it to =1 will also make it disable. This way you can simply change the value back without re-adding the seting back in.
Full details are in my post here:

I will attempt to .cab an .xml file that will allow you to import the change without a registry editor.
Is this key there right after a hard reset or does it only appear *after* the SIM is installed and the device is turned on?

I'm really not sure at this point.
I finally got this registry edit (or "Hack" if you prefer) in to a .cab file that you can download and install without ever installing a registry editor.
It's perfectly safe to use. There are two cab files.
1) To disable the existing proxy server setting
2) To restore the proxy server setting back to the default state.
All it does is change the existing registry value from 0 to 1.
Get it here:
http://www.gadgetech.info/treo/hacks/disableproxy/index.shtml#Download:
Download the two .CAB files to your Treo 750. Just click on it to install it like you would any other .CAB file.
To verify that it's installed. Try to browse to http://device.home/ . If you can get to it the proxy is enabled. If yoiu can't, it's (most likely) disabled.
If you use isp.cingular or a wifi card, of course it will only work if it's disabled.

I just verified. These settings are NOT there before the SIM is inserted. Only after the SIM is registered (SIM inserted, and phone turned on) do those settings become enabled.
Good catch. So it's not hard-coded. It's a carrier preference. I would assume that if I put a non-cingular SIM in the phone this setting would disappear. Palm does specified configuration based on the SIM inserted on thier Palm OS line, I assume they've done this on WM5.
I've been through the MSDN documentation and there's a whole big section devoted to carrier provisioning which is what this is.

Hey,
I'd like to know if there is a solution to give the PIE a special proxy setting via the registry.
Due to some restrictions i am forced not to make general proxy settings in the connection manager, but i want the PIE to route via an proxy. Since PIE doesn't provide a proxy setting within the program i'm wondering, if there is the possibility to do so in the registry....
anyone know how to copy ROM files?? I found a DLL and registry entries for "PorkPie.dll" in the \Windows folder that I think is responsible for the cingular proxy hard coding and other customizations.
RF9, I noticed your Fido logo in your profile... Have you managed to get IE to work with a Fido SIM using this method?
Pls help : Unlocked Treo750 - Not able to view websites
Hi - I bought unlocked Cingular treo750 from US and now using in India. Have setup my ISP and using the Internet. I can now download my emails, use Pocket MSN but unfortunately not able to see any website on IE. It keeps says "Locating" to any kind of website I want to view.
The problem is only on viewing websites. IMAP email and Pocket MSN works perfect therefore I presume the connection is perfect.
Could you please help me on this.
After some time - The message appears "Page can not be downloaded as the connection was lost..."
Thanks very much.

Treo 750 Proxy Disable
Hi RF9
I have been following your thread on getting a treo 750w from Cingular to work on the Fido network. I have tried to change the registry settings as you have described:
- <wap-provisioningdoc>
- <characteristic type="Registry">
- <characteristic type="HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings">
<parm name="EnableAutoDetect" value="1" datatype="integer" />
</characteristic>
</characteristic>
</wap-provisioningdoc>
I got the download, but I am afraid I am not familiar enough to know how to install the changes on my phones software. Could you please do a more step by step explanation for me (us). Everything works on my Fido phone except when I go to a web page I get: "connecting" "locating" and then "page cannot be displayed".
Many thanks for your help. Ian

Enquiring Minds
Please forgive my lack of technical savy; I am really struggling to learn all of this stuff...so my questions might seem a bit "stupid"... (it's just my old age showing!
Could this proxy thing be causing my problems in accessing bank of america's website? I was able to do so just fine on my old Treo 680, nad my AT&T Tilt (I hated that phone!), but on my 750 with WM6, I keep receiving a message that says "For security reasons, your device can't access Mobile Banking" I also cannot access other banking sites as well.
If so, will making these changes cause other issues?
Thanks for your patience and information. You folks here are the best!

Tom, I just tried www.bankofamerica.com and I got into it fine. So this does not seem to be the problem.
About your unit...
Thanks for the reply!
Are you using an AT&T branded 750 with the WM6 upgrade, or a generic or other branded 750? I have the AT&T branded one.
Thanks again for your reply!

Yes, I have the at&t branded with the official WM6 upgrade also. I do have the at&t CapPackage removed per the instructions on this site but all the MediaNet dB is intact.
Cap Package?
I have not heard about that one? Can you elaborate, or point me in the rigt direction? Thansk!
Tom
RF9, this is very similar to what I'm experiencing, but when I go to "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi on\Internet Settings" the EnableAutoDetect value is already set to 1.
I have the AT&T Tilt, which came with WM6.
Here's my problem thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=352064

Hi RF9,

Hi to All;
Im sorry if im posting this email on a wrong thread. My apologies am not very familiar with this type of threads. I would like to ask for any assistance on my Mobile fone. I bought a Treo 750 AT&T from a friend who works in the States who brought his mobile fone here in the Philippines. I am now using the Treo 750 here in the philippines using a local network provider. I can send sms using the local network but I can't seem to connect to the internet and can't even send an MMS. Ive have tried hopelessly but there would always b e a promp which says" Connecting to : AT&T , connecting to GPRS,3G.." and it can't connect...I also tried to access yahoo and internet explorer but the same thing, could'nt access as well. I tried to ask assistance from the network's wireless center but they said that they could not help me on this problem either. I am no left with an expensive mobile phone with a lot of features, but couldn't use them. I hope somebody can help me with this type of problem.
Best regards,
Abrille
I have a Palm Treo 750 and am having problems running FlexMail IMAP IDLE through my O2 UK network connection.
Simply put, IMAP IDLE does not give me instant notification of new emails when the device is in "sleep mode". Thinking this was a problem with my device, I tried the exact same device, software and settings, but with a Vodafone UK SIM (and appropriate network settings). On Vodafone, I always get instant notifications - i.e. IMAP IDLE works perfectly! - even in sleep mode.
I am interested to know if anyone has IMAP IDLE working on an O2 network when in "sleep mode", irresepective of the device (for now at least).
Also, is there anything that O2 may be doing on their GPRS/3G connections that could hinder IMAP IDLE when the unit sleeps?
Looking forward to your thoughts and comments.
Quick update
I have done a bit more testing on this now. Although it's difficult to analyse accurately, I seem to get IMAP IDLE working in areas where a 3G/UMTS network is available on O2. A train journey to London in the week had emails being updated almost realtime, so it does seem to work. However, when I am at home I get no IMAP IDLE eventhough the green diamond is displayed (FM's way to indicate that IDLE is working) - O2 coverage is not 3G/UMTS at home.
Strangley, with band selection set to GSM only (so I only use the GPRS data connection even if a 3G/UMTS is available) the conclusions are the same.
Still keen to hear of any other O2 users experiences.....
How to set idle command on IMAP
Could you elaborate a bit on how you use IDLE? I need to setup an IMAP account I have with that capability but not sure how to do it using the windows mobile email client on my 750.
Thanks.
Well I have the MMS client in my build....
And if I load the T-Mobile GPRS/MMS setting CAB, it works.
However, I can't manage to MANUALLY configure it.
Every time I try to do a "send/receive" after setting it up I get an instant error, which implies that whatever the client is looking for in the connections, its not finding it.
Anyone manage to get this to work with manual configuration? I don't want to use the T-Mo CAB because it "hides" the connection profiles, which sucks bananas, and it also breaks connections when plugged into ActiveSync.
