XDA2 involuntary hard resets - General Topics

It started about five months ago. My XDA2 just does hard resets involuntarily and I have tried everything I can think of to stop it. It usually does it about once a week but occasionally it does it a few times a day.
I have done a complete download from the XDA site several times but it doesn't stop it. I have removed every bit of software which I have added to no avail. I like the XDA (its my second one and the first gave no trouble) but sometimes I feel like putting it in the bin.
Anybody got any suggestions other than binning it?

[POLL] Do you have Random Shutdowns?

Wondering what the 'Real' statistics are on this... a lot of posts and responses, however, want to capture the statistics...
I get it rarely.. I haven't had it in awhile. :T
Only time I have ever had a shutdown was doing stuff with kernels. Once I was finished with the changes I was making my phone has been great.
Mine was doing fine for the past couple days....it never shut down over that span. Last night it did it twice within an hour!
I usually get shutdowns at least once a day.
Nice, it was on all of 20 minutes this morning...went to wake it and it was off again!
I get them every so often, but then again I'm running JH3 ROM WITH JP3 modem with the vibrant kernel. If out didn't random reboot every so often I'd be more surprised, but its the price I pay for HSUPA 3.0 down 1.6 up.
never had this problem
I've never had this problem.
I had it with my original phone. Returned it in the first week, and the replacement had never done it for 5 weeks.
It has done it for me twice. I have had the phone since launch day.
Well, these posts are concerning. I've experienced plenty of times when the phone would hang, but never shut down.
Never happen on the 4 different captivate in my house.

After i got mine, rootes it and used any task manager, i got them very frequently. I have since done a factory resetvflash and rooted with Unleash The Beast as well as have it do all the bloatware removal and sideloading setup, and havent had an issue since.
Hope it stays like that. Its hard to txt at work when you have to keep turning your phone back on...And yes we can txt on our phones at work..lol

I never have.
I don't root or sideload or use task-killers.
It is fine.
BTW: I got mine at the end of July.
I've never had a random reboot. I did however have the spontaneous home button presses that made using any apps almost impossible. But that problem went away when I moved to JH3.
It's happened 3 times since I got mine on launch.
Not yet . . . (knock on wood)
Maybe a better poll would be to have the same choices for both Stock and Tweaked-(rooting and anything that requires it, and/or different rom versions)
I've only experienced it once and it was due to that retarded daily briefing widget. Haven't used it since and haven't had a random reboot/shutdown in the past month.
This just started happening to me -- three times in less than a day. Stock ROM, rooted, bloatware removed, no lag fix. Going to uninstall the last couple of apps I installed to see if that makes a difference.
Happened twice in four weeks, once on the first day and once today.
Everything is stock. Market apps only.

[Q] Sensation Resetting Constantly?

Ive had this sensation since day one it came out and ever since it was doing light resets showing the HTC splash and going back to the main home screen but now its become much more intense. it does a full restart and everything. I get all the splashes, the TMO one and the HTC one. And it takes forever for it to restart too! It happened to me once while i was on the phone randomly. and other times just when it was chillin in my pocket.
I put ADW Launcher on there but i hope that isnt the reason why it is doing this. My guess is that im killing the memory forcing it to restart but that shouldnt be the case if it is just in my pocket.
Let me know if you guys have had the same issue too.
I will be taking my phone back to my store whilist fighting the 50$ BS restocking fee. Ive had this thing for 4 days and its giving me problems just like the G2x! Ive had so many phones this past 3 months and its become a pain.
Exact the same issue here, and seeing other posts on this forum, we are not the only one... Shop where I bought the phone YESTERDAY (in Holland), does not wan to replace it or return my money, guy just wants to repair it? OK, that's a dodgy side of the shop, but I believe that HTC should do something about this. I think that since yesterday, I have sent about 30 'Abnormal reset' reports. The phone prompted me to send this to HTC and I did.
I hope that you can resolve your issue. Maybe an idea - I have Lebara prepaid card - and it happens every 2 minutes that the phone resets itself. Maybe if you try another card - you might get better luck - but that should not be the point - we just want to use our own sim-cards, right?
If you manage to get the solution - please let me know. Cheers and good luck!!!!
Mine seems to reboot the ui constantly as well. At first it seemed like it was only when I installed large batches of apps. Now I've seen it when closing the browser, closing angry birds, after leaving the settings menu... It seems completely random. Very sad, it looks like I'm returning yet another device and waiting for the next. This is just one of Many issues I've had after only one week of use.

I literally took mine off the charger and it was ON...Got on my Xoom for a second and something told me to grab my phone...So as I hit the power/unlock button nothing happens....i hold it down...nothing...i try the volume and all the others...nothing...
So i finally took the battery off..put it back in and it starts up once i pushed the button...
Thats what i get as far as my issue..basically the phone turns off randomly on its own...I miss all kinds of calls and stuff.
I pray this is addressed in an OTA..cause my 1st unit had 0 issues other than the 1 dead pixel that i should have just dealt with.
This happened to me two of three times today. It seems as if the quality of the software is deteriorating the longer I have had it.
Posted in another thread. Had the phone 5 days and until this afternoon no problems at all. Today it was sitting on my desk, screen dark and spontaneously the boot screen came on and it was booting. Wasn't running anything.
Just using stock Sense, no launchers or even widgets running.
So far just one reboot. Will keep monitoring.
Mine just restarted twice today while I was speaking!
And the gsm signal is really, really bad compared with other phones.
This is just the way that Android works. Launchers (and other apps not currently being used) get pushed out of memory when the memory is needed, such as when browsing with lots of windows open or playing a memory intensive game. When going back to the launcher, it therefore needs to reload.
It's not an error or a bug.
You'd basically be taking you're phone back saying "The OS on my phone is working how it was designed. Please can I have a refund."

Fake iMito MX1 "R-Box" shut down issue

EDIT: Fixed. For some reason it was a power issue. I used two different chargers (not cheap ones, but professional ones) and for some reason it wouldn't work well. However, I changed to simple USB chargers and it worked without a problem. Sorry for wasting your time. I will keep this thread here in case others come across my same problem!
Hi all,
I tried searching the forums over and over with no luck.
I purchased this stick very recently and found it to be a fake.
The problem I have encountered is that it randomly turns off whenever I open an app. It started with the browser-- every time I open the browser, it shuts off. I restored to factory settings and the browser was working, however every time I click into the play store it shuts down.
This happened from the first day I got the device-- I have never used it for more than ~2-3 minutes (the only thing which does not make it shut off is the settings!).
Maybe I am missing something. If you could kindly help me work through it it would be extremely appreciated.

[Q] Nexus 5 Screen Tantrum

My nexus 5 is three days old now. This morning when I was reading an article in Chrome my screen started to just freak out. It was clicking links, going back to my app drawer, opening programs, going to Google now, opening (and sending!) emails, hangouts, Google Voice SMS messages, etc.
Thinking it might just be a glitch I did the first troubleshooting step - I turned it off and then turned it back on again. After a few minutes it was glitching again.
When it stopped momentarily I went right ahead and did a hard reset - just in case there was a Virus or something insidious on my phone. Normally I'd hold off on that option, but for this time since I didn't really have anything on the device I figured it was the appropriate course of action. After doing the hard reset and starting up my phone again, within a few minutes it was freaking out again. Luckily, I had the presence of mind to grab my old Galaxy Nexus and take a video recording of what I was seeing:
www [dot] youtube [dot] com/watch?v=6J5ILs-MqjI
Here are the facts:
- The phone is three days old.
- This is the first time that I've noticed this issue, however on day 1 I left the phone on my desk when I went to get some lunch. When I left (and came back) the battery was approximately 70%. Yet, mysteriously, in that 30 minute time frame the unit had shut itself off.
- The phone has not yet been exposed to moisture, extreme heat, or extreme cold. It has not yet been dropped. There are no other indications of manufacturer's defect readily visible.
- The screen is clean
- While having the tantrum, the phone went in and out of airplane mode several times.
- The tantrum occurred both before and after the hard reset. Installed apps weren't even completely downloaded when recurrence happened.
- In another fit, it eventually restarted itself.
Is this a hardware issue? Software issue? User error? Should I initiate an RMA?

It definitely doesn't look like a user error, seems to prove you're using it fine when you can. This tantrum could be both hardware and/or software. If it were me with such a new device having an issue like this, i'd get a new one. I'd initiate RMA sooner rather than later.

Thanks. I guess with no other defects I just want to make sure it isn't user error or an app I have installed or anything. Seems like a waste to wait another month to get another unit and increasing the chances of it being someone else's refurb.

Well based on my experience with Google and Nexus devices, typically they'll try hard in your situation to get a you a new device and sooner. They'll probably resell yours as a refurb but issue you a new one.
Fingers crossed.

Phone is super laggy after every reboot

Just want to start with a note to the mods. I used to be pretty active on XDA a while ago. Back then the forums were kind of a mess and it was hard to figure out where to post things. I don't know what happened but this redesign is like 10 times worse. Maybe this should be posted in the Note 8 forum, if it exists, but I can't find it.
On to my issue...
For the last few weeks, every time I reboot my Galaxy Note 8, it is extremely laggy for a day or so. Makes the phone nearly impossible to use. It even happens on the lock screen when I'm trying to enter my PIN. After a while the problem clears up and things are back to normal. It's one of the few times when rebooting the phone actually causes a problem rather than (possibly) clearing up a problem.
One thing that happened around the time this started happening is I began using an SD card for the first time. But I only use the card for storing photos. And when the phone isn't being laggy, access to photos seems normal and zippy just as when they were on the phone's storage. So I do not think that is the problem. Anyone heard of a problem like this? I tried searching for help with this issue but the combination of "laggy" and "reboot" bring up a ton of results that tells you to reboot when the phone is laggy.

If you really want to know what's happen behind the lagginess, you should take an `adb bugreport` and post it in your thread, so that other people may take a look at it and find out something useful. It's nearly impossible to diagnose without log.
That being said, you can also just try to factory reset your phone and chances are that things will work smoothly again.
