Hi,
I'm off to America soon and thought that leaving the GPS and GPS to Google Earth program running would be quite interesting when I return and load it to Google Earth. However I have two problems....
1. Am I allowed bluetooth switched on while a plane is in the air?
2. Is there a way to extend the 8 hour battery life of my Clip-on GPS, as the flight is 10-11 hours long?
Anyone else ever done this?
Cheers,
M
Hi,
I would guess probably not as you have to have flightmode off to use BT and airlines generally don't allow you to have your cell phone on.
Regards
Nope, you can use bluetooth with flightmode on. Also I don't use it (M2000) as a phone anymore as it's too big, therefore no sim card in there...

My understanding is that airplane mode should turn off all communication type functions (phone, wifi, bluetooth). I was flying across the country the other day and I had my device in airplane mode. I was still able to start up the FM Radio and catch radio stations below. I was also able to start up the HTC GPS Tool and got GPS locks very quickly. It was very cool to see my device show us flying at over 11,000 meters and 827 km/h. Next time I should have some maps locally stored on my phone so I can see where in the world we are, because the lat and long don't mean anything to me as numbers.
Anyways, I thought that those kind of things were probably meant to not run during airplane mode but they do anyway. Just thought I'd share.
not really a reciver like fm and gps dont transmit anything only recieve
it's transmission which could in theory interfere with fligtht controls
Hi there,
First of all, I could find any definitive answer to this problem, so I'm sorry if it's repeated, anyway please let me know the reference.
I want to use the GPS outdoor the most time the battery allows to me. To do it, I want to save battery when I'm using the GPS powering off other options.
The problem here comes when I power off wifi, bluetooth and phone: Flight Mode gets activated and then GPS cannot be used.
So is there any way to use GPS while all these radios options are off?
If not, which is the way that Polaris will save more battery?:
- Poweroff all except phone, and cancel when asking for PIN
- Poweroff all except wifi
- Poweroff all except bluetooth (I suppose this should be the better, but some "guru" can confirm?)
Thanks in advance and BR.
Hi lince,
A week ago I was flying from Frankfurt. I switched flight mode on and IGO8 in parallel to trace my flight.
GPS worked fine, phone and the rest were down.
Huh?
You had GPS on during airplane flight???
What were you flying? Cessna?
Hope it was not commercial flight in one of those Jumbo Jets. If it was, you should have no signal for GPS - no optical visibility to satelites!

Hate to correct you dude but I've used my phone gps many times on commercial airliners.
It can sometimes be slow to get a fix, especially with the Qualcomm integrated chip (Sirf III seems to work better) but if you can sit in a window seat, once you got a good signal it works fine.
I've used a medion PNA100, Orbit (Artemis), Orbit2 (Polaris) and Ignito (Diamond) amongst others.
As Kalbust says, the gps works fine in flight mode.
Check this list to see which airlines allow gps receivers to be used while seatbelt signs are OFF.

OK, I stand corrected.
No hard feelings...
Hi again.
After some testing I've seen that GPS can stay ON while flight mode is also ON. What made me confused is that TomTom realizes about flight mode and then maintains the screen in grey color, but GPS is still working....

Hi,
when you're flying try using GPS Cycle Computer , a brilliant piece of software which can be run with the screen turned off and other battery saving features.
The tracks generated can be displayed in Google Maps on the Polaris - Fantabidozi

GPS flying
I tested it too in a Airbus a320, no window seat. Stock Radio and ROM, iGO 8.
Worked perfectly.
Yeah I fly a lot and it was one of the first things I did when I got my phone. Ran the GPS test tool. Got a fix very fast, was sitting next to the window. I even took a couple of gps location tagged photos of the rockies. I was also picking up some FM radio stations along the way.
Hello All,
Junior Newb here.
I'm thinking of purchasing an HTC Touch Pro(1) Sprint model from someone here. I am not planning on getting a sub from Sprint. I am purchasing the phone mainly to use as an GPS for when I am motorcycling as I do not have a mounted GPS on the bike. I am unclear on how GPS actually receives its signal? I have read and best I can decypher is GPS units gets their signal from various satellites. I have also read were various cell phone companies have their own spin on GPS software of their own creation? Am I going to be able to use Google maps on this phone and have it do what I want it to do? I am eons behind times,in case you hadn't guessed that by now. Also will the GPS be readable if I have the phone stuck in my chest pocket and pull it out going down the road? Can someone chime in on how long battery life would be with this scenario as well? I know the battery life listed in spec sheets are usually not even close in the real world.
Thanks,
Barry
Right!
GPS works by checking the different time stream data from several satellites - the receiver (in this case the phone) uses this to produce your position (and by changing position over time - speed).
Honestly - for 99.9% of people, this as it is - is useless. You then need to put this info into mapping software. Google maps is ok, but IMO itsnt very good for using while driving (prob much less for while on a bike!). Personally i use tomtom for in car and google for walking (so if you're checking your position & local roads, then riding - stop & repeat then google maps will prob be fine).
If you read more on the forums (and the web in general) you will come across 2 other "types" of GPS:
aGPS - assisted GPS - works by using your known position (roughly) from mobile/cell towers, this allows the GPS receiver to get a lock quicker.
quickGPS - this downloads the almanac data from the web so youre device knows where the satellites are. If you dont do this, it will download the data from the satellites themselves, but this takes longer.
Neither are any use on their own - they simply improve GPS lock times (from turning on, to having your position).
Battery life - depends on many things including your rom & radio, software, battery condition etc etc.
Remember - for google maps to work you will need a data connection (watch the cost if its not part of a deal).
If all you want is a hand held or bike GPS - then i think you're looking at a very bad choice in the touch pro! if you want a phone, pda, web browser, gps etc etc then it will probably do everything you want.
Hello All,
OK, This will show you how out of the loop I am.
Purchased an HTC Touch Pro (via CL), phone to see how it would work as simply an GPS while riding the motorcycle all over creation this summer.
I was able to download Google maps(4.0) here at home & installed via WIFI. After installing I could not get any satellites to 'come in'. I enabled the phone part on the Touch, then the satellites (5) became available and did in fact show my location! I am not going to get an actual data plan for this phone FYI. My question is,were does the GPS satellites "come from"? I assume the only way this will function properly is to have an WIFI connection? That being said, how does the regular 'car gps's' get their signal driving down the road?
Is the gps radio signal independent of both the wifi & data signals, I guess is what I am asking? Why would I have had to enable the phone/ON for the satellites to show up,when I do not have a data plan? Maybe just an inherit setup for the gps radio, config?
Thanks,
Barry

you can use GPS for free, you don't need to have a wifi connection or any other data connection
accountabc,
Thanks for the link! I was 'hoping' this is how the gps thing shook down. I figured there would have to be a catch to were I would have to have a data plan on the U S Cellular enabled HTC Touch Pro. This is going to work out just as I had hoped! No GPS hanging off of the handlebars, being a target for thieves every time i get away from the bike!!!.
Suweeeet!!!
Now if I can read it while tooling around the switchbacks???,,,Yikes...
take Care,
Barry
accountabc,
I had a brilliant idea,to test the viability of my Google Maps working without an Data or WIFI connection. I unplugged my Access point here. Tried opening Google Maps on the HTC Touch Pro, and get the 'connecting' dialouge at the top right of GM's. It finally times out with saying" A data connection is required for this app". I tried going into the setting of the "external gps" and took off the 'automatically configure' and set the com ports several different ways to no avail.
This phone does have the latest ROM that U S Cellular provides. I may have to try and start hacking with some other ROM's to see if an 'unlocked' ROM may circumvent this problem? Although I have had this phone for almost two months I have just started getting acclimated with it ,the last 2 days.
I'll do some more searching here to see if someone does in fact have a workaround for this? It does seem the GPS radio should do the grunt work. I am just not sure about the Google Maps needed to be updated dynamically with a net connection?
Thanks again,
Barry
why not use something like garmin xt which doesn't require a data conenction since all the maps are on a sd card
Hello. I recently started to ride a bike with Strava and track monitoring via watch. I have noticed poor GPS accuracy that makes strava recorded data unusable (max speed >100 kmph, twice more distance due to lost fix...).
Does anyone else observed same issues?
LEO-DLXX (LTE with no sim inserted)

Hi,
I did not observed this issue on my watch (LTE version). I would event say it is much more acccruate than my phone. But I notice that is not the same in every zone: in some cities, it is OK ans data are usuable, and in others, the GPS is more efficient and I can see which side of the road I was.
Here are some examples of my HWatch2 GPS:
https://ibb.co/iBmcDc
https://ibb.co/fpNHDc
Although I have only used GMaps for navigation, I will say it does give very accurate notifications which has helped me a lot in turning the right turns around 99% of the time compared to relying on only voice navigation on my phone.
Same happens here!
Hi dreamnewbie, Exactly the same thing happens to me, first I thought it was because of the coat, maybe a problem of low signal or the fact of running in the city, some interference by the constructions. after several tests I get to run with short sleeves in open spaces and it's exactly the same, I record the session with the phone and it always measures better, HW2 makes like "peaks" in the route indicating that I got to run at about 40 km/h? !! I do not know if the GPS antenna is very weak or a fault after the upgrade to Wear OS. I love the Huawei propieraty app to run but it is impossible to export workouts to cloud-based services. Regards!

Do you guys have a third party watch band? I recently changed the original watch band with a metal one. I noticed the metal interfere with the watches sensors like the compass. Also bluetooth range decreased... i guess i could influence gps reception as well. Now i have the original band installed and no problems. I have the watch for almost a year now and used it a lot for running. Never had any accuracy problems, distance and track was spot on....
I also encountered the same problem. .
What is the version of Strava you are using? Is there any solution?
If there is no way, is there any other application that can be used on the watch and synced to Strava?

I found out that the issue was interference with wireless bike counter - Kross KRC 319WC. After dismounting counter HW2 track recording is OK.
