Great news for Spb Backup users: v1.5.5 out, now, with working PIN protected backups!

Anyone having read my Definitive Pocket PC Backup Bible knows the reviewed (1.5.1) version of Spb Backup had severe problems with backing up PIN-protected Pocket PC’s in scheduled mode, which really reduced its usefulness.
Fortunately, the excellent Spb folks have fixed this problem (including some others) and released a new version of their backup application.
The new version passed all of my tests (I’ve made many tests to be absolutely sure) on password-protected Dell Axim x51v (A12), HTC Universal and HTC Wizard (AKU3.2).
Note that you don’t necessarily need to enter anything in the new Tools / Advanced Options / Phone / Automatically enter pin coder after scheduled backup and reboot (screenshot here) for the backup to succeed.
Verdict
Now that one of the major bugs (THE stumbling block for many users) have been fixed, Spb Backup has become a REALLY good alternative to both Sprite Backup and SKTools 3.x, my previous two most-recommended picks.

Misc news: Opera Mobile 9.5, SPB Mobile Shell 2.0, Sprite Archie etc.

1. Opera Mobile 9.5 announced!
The most powerful and standards-compliant Web browser for Windows Mobile has, finally, been updated! See THIS for the press release; THIS, THIS, THIS, THIS, THIS and THIS for user discussions.
(BTW, in my last, SkyFire-related news item, I’ve forgotten to link to the related HoFo thread. Now it’s done.)
2. SPB Mobile Shell 2.0 announced!
A lot of you may have been eagerly waiting for this upgrade. See for example THIS for more info.
3. The famous Sprite Software is proud to present Sprite Archie to backup / search / evaluate your call logs/ SMS messages. While there’re some tools (most notably, the free (!) PIM Backup and SKTools) that are able to backup your stuff (see the tutorial I’ve written on this HERE), Sprite Archie seems to take this a bit further.
See for example THIS for more info.
Also note that, for a limited time, get $5 off the $14.95 regular price by using coupon code SAFEB085.
4. Finally, some self-promotion again: I’ve collected the year 2007 online (!) frontpages of my articles, Bibles etc. HERE.

help? dictionary app?

can anyone help me? I've been looking for a dictionary app for the hd2 and haven't had any luck! ino there is tons for the iphone so just woundering if there is any for this, thanks.
I am using "Langenscheidt Dictionary for Windows Mobile".
But I guess it's only available in german...
Install Microsoft Reader and then download the free Encarta Pocket Dictionary. I have used it for ages with other Windows Mobile devices. Actually can read various books with pocket Microsoft Reader. Ed
Edit.... Not sure Microsoft Reader will work with 6.5.... It appears the available app is for wm 6.1 maybe you could try it for us and report back. Regards
There are lots of dictionary apps for windows mobile.

As a matter of fact I do think that there are lots of really good softs for windows mobile and they definitely can compete with Iphone ... and without the need to jailbreak or hack your own phone to be able to customize it a little bit !
But it is also a fact that it is more difficult to find the softs as there is no softaware catalog that could compete with the centralized AppStore : you have to search with google with a lots of keywords : Pocket PC, wm5, wm6, wm6.1, wm6.5, windows mobile and so on ...
<OFF TOPIC>
Yet the biggest enemy of Window Mobile in the ability to compete with Iphone is from my point of view ... Microsoft :
- With the aberrant conditions to entry MarketPlace for developers,
- And with their crappy windows phone 7 series that is maybe the biggest step backward in computer industry that I've ever seen,
they will totally kill Window Mobile and commit suicide to their mobile department !

Apart from "Encarta Pocket Dictionary" it is available the "Oxford English Dictionay" in .lit format for free some where in the net, and if you have a dictionary in .doc format (with hypertextual links) you can convert it to .lit format using the appropriate mirosoft word patch, all links will work in .lit too.

Pocket Informant end-of-life on WM, for free

I've been using Pocket Informant (in my opinion the best PIM software never made for mobile devices) for ages
And this week end , moving apps from the official ROM to the last fxdjacentyfxd ROM, I visited the Pocket Informant web to see if it was a new release....and I've found a note saying that they have stopped development for Windows devices (even Windows 7!!):

As you may be aware, Alex recently announced end-of-life for Windows Mobile products. You can download them (and "buy them" at no charge from Mobihand), but here are keys you can use for PI and Journal Sync:
Pocket Informant 9 - Windows Mobile PPC (touchscreen) - Y3QAT-8A8QY-MMYU3-YUY2G-CMWSA
Pocket Informant 9 - Windows Mobile Smart Phone (no touchscreen) - AGKCD-A22CU-EQ6C5-AQWSG-S3Q8A
Journal Sync - 02-R10371866-298
Download links:
Pocket Informant http://download.pocketinformant.com/9/
Journal Sync: http://download.pock...or_PI_Setup.exe
Thanks,
Don
after that I've found a thread here:

It's a pity, and it's just another fact that proves that WM users we are a kind of "Jurassic Parc" of the mobile devices, far away from Iphones and Androids
The only good new is that you can install this app from the oficcial page for free. Test it! it's agreat program to organize your professional and leisure life (and now for free, that has been a " beau geste" from the owner, WEBis, to all the WM users for all these years toguether)
I don`t know I should be happy or I should cry.

SBSH Calendar (non-touch) never fixed for WM6.5
@Pere
Since everyone has stopped developing for WM Standard (non-touch), we are some kind of Jurassic Park, right.
I am a SBSH Calendar (Papyrus, non-touch) fan - but they never fixed the Calendar to work with WM6.5!
It's a shame but understandable.

Giving PI9 away for free is a nice way to say goodbye!

Synchronisation throught SkyDrive (WM 6.5 / WM 6.5.3)

Hello everyone,
I watched an interesting TV commercial yesterday showing a kind of live synchronisation between a Win7 computer and a Windows Phone 7 phone.
The stunning thing was that all changes performed at the PC came to the phone at once!
Here's the spot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXg4sZ8IUXI
Is this also possible under WM 6.5 or 6.5.3?
I have just read through some threads and they told that the programs used are OneNote 2010 Mobile / Desktop version and synchronisation via SkyDrive.
Some users mentioned this would not work under older WM versions since it is not compatible. Can anyone help and provide some more information concerning that issue?
Thanks in advance!
I use GoodSync for that (My Documents), but this isn't exactly what you're looking for.
