I'm noticing very faint static when I play back my music files in Windows Media on my Sprint 6700 (Apache). I've tried different headphones and ruled that out. I know the files are good...they play back fine on my Imate Jam.
My guess is that the software or ROM isn't optimized in some way and its causing the distortion.
Anyone else notice this? Any ideas for improving the quality?
After 3 days with the 6700, I'm sending it back. I've been a fan of HTC products back to the first XDA. I've owner 4 of their phones - the XDA, PDA2K, I-Mate JAM, and now the Sprint 6700.
While it's a great product in many ways, it misses the mark in terms of audio quality. For the past year, I've use my I-Mate Jam every day at the gym...it's my IPOD with all my favorite music. I use Yahoo's music service and constantly fill it with new tunes. When the 6700 arrived, I copied my library over and was eager to try it out.
Within five minutes, I was disappointed. First, the volume was amazingly low compared to my JAM. Nealy 40% lower. So much so that on certain songs, it was hard to hear. On my JAM, the volume is so loud it hurts. While I don't turn it up that high, its great to know when you're in a noisy room or on a plane you can hear your music. Bluetooth was even worse. I have an Acura TL with built-in hands free. The JAM works great here. With the 6700, I have to crank the volume nearly twice as much just to hear.
Second, there is a lot of distortion. It's like listening to a dusty record or a worn cassette. Pops, crackles, and skips are very noticeable. My music is encoded at 192Kps...on the Jam its like a CD. On the 6700 its annoying...like I'm listening to my old Sony Walkman from 1985. Some music actually skips a beat.
I just don't get it. This is the 5th generation device from HTC. How come after all this they can't get it right? With each device there have been bad quirks. Things like the PDA2K's faulty Bluetooth support (read the posts and you'll see what I mean) or the JAM's really poor camera. There's always something. Don't they learn from past experience? By now, it should be nearly perfect. Boards like this are full of feedback.
Uggg. I like the rest of the device. WM5 is great. EVDO...WOW! Nice improvements in many areas. The keyboard is solid...more useable than to Palm's Treo. But if you're into music, this device really misses the mark and in my case, that's every day.
I'm going to exchange it in hopes that maybe it's a bad unit. I doubt it though. I've tried four different headphones from the ones inside the box to high-end Bose...all sound the same. It's too bad...I really thought this would be the perfect PDA/Phone combo.
Heres the thing me and my partner both use htc p3600 for work. We have a kitchen company. We both like music and want to listen to mp3. So we could buy an ipod but whats the point. Does anybody know of a good speaker dock for the p3600 or good speaker system that we could jerry rig. It would bee great to charge the phone at the same time.
havent seen any for htc devices but then they change much more in forms and sizes then ipods do
one option would be the expansys cable which have both 3.5mm out and usb in then it can be charged and play using audio out at the same time
companys see market and sales %'s and various htc phones is a much much smaler market then ipods
not saying that there is no product like the one you are looking for
but not anything i ever come across
Just to let you know.....
For my iPod I bought (years ago) a Bose Sounddock.
Problem with that dock it is only for Apple iPod of iPhone.
Now look what i bought ...... a cable that i can plugin into the sounddock and the other end into my Samsung Galaxy S. Really nice.
Works perfect and the Voodoo Control app from supercurio is also superb on this thing! With an app called TuneIn Radio I now listen all day long to streaming radio from around the world.
Hmmm... you are still going to lose some quality though since you are now using a 3.5 mm connector. Why not just stick with the iPod?

To be honest, the quality is really ok.
And the iPod i have is an old one. Can not stream music from online radio stations. And since i have the SGS i thought to give it a try.
Nice article for DIY kinda people can be found here.
Hi all i just thought id share a recent purchase as i was so pleased with it. I just bought a set of SD10 bluetooth headphones/handsfree. Basically they are small foldable wireless headphones that let you answer and make calls, also control your music, when used for chatting on the phone people have told me the sound quality from the mic is great, and listening to music i found them loud enough but slightly on the tinny side, but not too bad i was amazed how loud and good the sound quality was, i did enable a volume booster app to give them a bit more punch.
Overall awsome for music when working out , jogging, or long phonecalls on the note 8, with upto 20 hours of battery life and 400 hours standby, recharged by usb. They fit behind your head rather than over the top and are impossible to shake off as they kaind of loop over each ear.
I highly recommend them... i purchased mine from ebay for about £15, but they are about £25 in online stores
Heres a video on them... gimme your thoughts

I love my music and have always carried an mp3 player along with a phone. Mostly consisting of apple products. In looking for a phone with a certain set of features.
User replaceable readily available battery, a microSD slot and good sound for under $100 bucks? Does such a device exist?

either HTC phone with beats audio or Sony Xperia

I think all samsung super smartphones are the best mp3 players but some of them that have sterio speekers are excelent.

Any device with a dedicated hardware sound processing is good.
If you're looking for more software sound processing. Any device can suit. Check out for battery capacity for long time listening.
DSP Manager built into cyanogenmod does the EQ trick for me... and with wifi at most places and soundcloud / google music - how much storage do you really need on the phone?
:: I still have grandfathered unlimited data at verizon so I dont even need the wifi hah.
Nokia express music, the best

I would too recommend the HTC with Beats Audio, but honestly, almost any high-end smartphone would do
Sony mobile with walkman player + quality earphones
I've said this before in another topic but listening to your tunes (ONLY) on my Xperia Z Ultra will give you two days 5 hours and 31 minutes of non-stop greatest. Any device with more than 2800 mh battery. The higher the better

Maybe a feature phone? Cheap, long battery life and with sd card like a Nokia for example

Galaxy S2, S3. good sound quality. S3 have wolfson dac, s2 have yamaha dac.
Maybe Sony phones are good for music.
Suggest you use Power amp with any phone, totally worth the price you pay.
Im using it with my Xperia S which of course is anyway good in sound quality but still i have tried poweramp with a cheap chinese tablet and the sound quality for a cheap tablet was superb :good:
Am I allowed to bump this thread? I hope so because I recently realized how much battery listening to music takes on my phone, so I am looking for an alternative, 2nd device just for music only, preferably something with sd storage option.
I actually looked at sony NWZ-E380 mp3 players, they have truly amazing sound, now I know why people bought dedicated mp3 players, this little device has excellent sound.
I am considering lumia 520 at $30 with microSD and nice xbox zune software but I am not sure if it has good sound quality or battery life.
I don't want to pay $150 or $200 for that, so someone suggested getting Sprint or Verizon bad ESN phones.

Nice info with a good detail. Does it matter which variant? There are so many S3s around Euro, Korea version, USA unlock version, USA carrier variants, etc.. I think S3 can be had for $75 or so now but I am concerned about battery life, how is it in airplane mode with music off SD card?
