I'm an idiot - salt water - General Topics

right, i managed to get the phone splashed with sallt water. i can see some water under the display. so, should i breal the void sticker and open it to dry it out or what?

Well it's possible to do it, a friend of mine did the same, but you must be very careful and you must know exactly what you're doing. If I remember well, in this forun there should be a post where is displayed how to open your ppc, make a search...but remember is not an easy thing to do!
Good luck!

Hello, i'm the asci friend who washed his xda2
i assure you that the procedure is not for the faint of heart.
the opening procedure is rather simple but pay attention and don't dent or scratch the external case. you can see a really good explanation here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=8525&highlight=open+xda+ii
the most difficult part (at least for me) is to CUT (yes with a cutter) the display in order to separate the glasstop (touchscreen glass) from the tft because the water (in my case) was between them.
you can have a look at it here (the procedure illustrated is for an IPAQ but it's almost the same for XDA2): http://www.gethightech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=GHT&Category_Code=_IPAQDIG
then you need to remove the water. and be absolutely sure to leave the internal surface of tft and glasstop absolutely clean. everything within them can limit down the sensitivness of the touchscreen.
Then you need to reattach the 2 part (glass top and tft) togheter with a small pression, trying to be perfectly aligned.
An advice: don't touch the tft or touchscreen connectors they're absolutely not strong and can be broken.
Think twice before doing that.
For me it has worked but i don't assure it would for you. I'm not a phone technician.
Good luck
PS: as you may imagine this procedure void the warranty.
Sorry for my little english.
Hope to help.
Roberto

Read the recent thread regarding dropping the XDA in water. Saltwater is particularly bad, you need to get to this as soon as possible.

Solution for Unresponsive Joysticks: WD-40

I'm guessing others have suffered from annoying, unresponsive joystick problems as much as I have. I read elsewhere online about using a drop of WD-40 lubricant on the joystick to solve the problem. I just wanted to let others here know that I tried this, and while at first it seemed like it didn't help or perhaps even made the problem worse, I've noticed that now my joystick responds *perfectly* - perhaps even better than when I first got it (I bought mine used).
I used these instructions to disassemble my SDA. I used the T6 Torx screwdriver included in this kit found at Dealextreme.com for US$2.65 with free international shipping.
Remove the plastic top from the joystick mechanism and let one drop of WD-40 soak into it. Move the joystick around (as if navigating on your phone) for about a minute to spread the WD-40 around.
Again, my experience was that at first it seemed to make it worse, but after the first day it got better and better. It's now gone one month without any problems.
Update: 8 months later and my joystick is still working perfectly, without any additional lubrication. I definitely recommend this process, though as usual with anything like this, attempt it at your own risk.
Hi,
KONTAKT working too
I didn't even take my spv c600 apart.
Just took the battery out.
Sprayed WD40 around the joystick and wiggled it about for a couple of mins ...
Then left it to dry.
Result = Perfect Joystick
Hey, my left softkey is not so responsive.
What could be the remedy? Mind showing the contacts between the keypad and the circuit board?
Thanks for the tip! I was hoping I wasn't going to have to take my phone apart though.
Cool, thank you! I had the same problem, and already bought and installed another keyboard - and got the joystick problem back after few months. Now I just sprayed WD40 around the joystick, wiggled it for a while, and it works like new! ) THANKS!
Just a warning: if you do this without disassembling the phone be very careful to only do ONE or TWO drops and sparingly. Although I thought I only did a couple, I now have a nice discolored "blob" going up through my lcd, not that it doesnt personalize it a bit, but not quite what I was going for
I just used to take a drop of alcohol on a little piece of paper tissue, with a toothpick carefully cleaning the base of the joystick around. This has always helped for 2-3 months.
Well, I always used deodorant spray when my joystick was not responsive (with phone closed, tilt the joystick both up & down and then spray, just a bit - no need to disassemble the phone). No problem, no stress.
I cleaned my joy in the same way. (disassembling cover + WD-40)
This is perfect way. I did that a 2-3 month ago and joy is still working perfectly.
I made the same with my old Motorola's and their joyisticks are working perfectly for about year now
Ps. WD-40 need some time to start working. Next day after cleaning everything should work very nice
Ps2. I don't recommend spraying WD-40 on non uncovered joystick. The best (and the safest) way is to spray only joy. I had to change microphone in my moto becouse of that ;P
thanks for sharing this. ill be doing it tonight!
white lithium grease in the spray can also works really well. Just take one small drop on a toothpick and pull joystick down and drop it in there. Its an easy alternative to having to take the phone apart. I did this last October and it still works great.
funny.. just seconds before i found this topic.. i put 2 drops of contactspray in the joystick. for so far it doesn't helps much..
so i am not the only one with these problems
sticky?
Mods: I'd like to suggest this thread be made a sticky.

I dropped my phone on concrete floor from about 4 ft high and it bounce up and bounce. luckily it is still working with some problem with power switch and few loose casing (I glued it with super glue).
To fix the unresponsive joystick I tried to open following the instructions but the screw near the power switch is not able to remove, seems something broken inside after that drop, and I could not completely open it. So, tried to put few drops of spirit on the joystick but I actually pour some. After that I thought joystick is responsive more but later it remains same. Yesterday only I found out my keypad backlight is not glowing in the dark. I don't know when the problem started, after that drop, after that spirit, or after some setting change (I flashed Kamadaze's Pro RC7).
Sorry for long story.. but someone help me .. my joystick & key backlight.
Thanks in advance.
I will try doing with some organic solvent, but first I will have to wait for my joystick to malfunction (I always use nineway keypad to keep my joystick safe though )
What is the exact name and company of WD-40. Can any one tell me its composition coz i have many chemical lab retailers around in my neighbouring city

I would have thought a generic "maintenance spray" would do the trick.

Cracked Screen on my Touch Pro

I dropped my touch pro and cracked the screen in a few places. I think it works normally except for the screen, as it receives calls fine...
A new phone isn't in my budget right now. Does anyone know of a good place (hopefully in DC, MD or VA) that will supply or install a replacement touch screen?
(btw, no recent threads came up when I searched.)
Ebay!
Just looked, $30 including postage for a screen & digitiser if you are able to do it yourself.
How hard is it to replace a screen if it has surface damage? Is there anywhere i could find a walkthrough or help?
Shame man, its a tragedy of what happened to your phone...
Luckily its not too bad, and you may just be able to fix it. You can download the service manual for the phone here: http://htcwinmobile.blogspot.com/2009/03/htc-raphaeltouch-pro-service-manual.html
Just a note though, make sure you DO USE tweezers or something to get the speaker wires out of the way before snapping the enclosure back into position... I had to reopen the phone again, after powering it, to rejoin one of the little wires thats like a tenth of a millimeter thick DO NOT IGNORE ANYTHING THEY TELL YOU IN THE MANUAL. Oh, and what works well for the "plastic removal tool" is a cut out piece of plastic ice cream container. AGIAN, do not ignore anything in there... You are voiding the warranty permanently when you do it yourself (which you unfortunately have to).
Anyways, good luck!
I drop my phone also, but the screen didn't actually cracked! but I do have is problems with the screen in other ways! Sometimes I get a black screen when I turn on the phone and sometimes not, but when the screen turns on, it flickers a lot and have lines thru it. What suprises me is that sometimes I get perfect images on the screen (Which makes me think that the screen it's not damaged).
Any suggestion would be apreciated. Thanks!
3 days and still no answer from anyone! I would like someone to throw me ligth on this issue. I'm waiting for this to know exactly what I need to buy, before I start assuming things.
Thanks in advance!

Sounds like the LCD connector may have come unseated. You could open up the phone and make sure all connectors are firmly seated if you feel confident in your abilities.

Thanks for the advice! I was thinking on that also and wanted to take my chances opening the phone (oh god!).
BTW, I saw the $30 LCD Screen+Digitizer combo on ebay that Beeble referred to, but I'm not sure if it fits on the fuze (my model). What have come to my mind it's to buy also the front camera of the phone (like a thread on the kaiser) to mod the cell, in case I need to buy the screen+digitizer. I've search all threads about this issue but nobody has done it because it was too expensive for the result; I believe with this price it's worth it right now!
solved
Try this steps:

I used Diamod (!) LCD and Touch Pro digitiser. Works perfect.
Much more cheaper
If your screen works fine sometimes, you most likely don't need to replace it. there's probably just a loose connection somewhere. If you really want to replace it though, there's an ebay seller with a really good deal. $20 for the screen and digitizer already glued into a new front body piece: http://cgi.ebay.com/OEM-HTC-FUZE-LC...wItemQQptZPDA_Accessories?hash=item3ef8817bf6 That one's for the fuze, but I think the seller has other models too. I'd definitely get the LCD and digitizer together or else you might end up like I did on my first attempt: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584050

WOW! What a long way to get to the screen. Good luck for everyone who tries to dismount and mount the Raphael.

Thanks for the advise maxh,
I just wanted to let you know that a miracle just happened! my cellphone started to work just fine without even opening the phone! it has more than a week on this situation so I believe that it's exactly what you stated (the LCD conector became unseated or loose). Since it's still working, I have no need to open it! so I'll just wait until it becomes defective again and at that point just open it and tight up the LCD connector!
Anyway, I would love if somebody could make the mod that I was refereing to before (changing the screen of the fuze by the touch pro one) and see if it's possible to attach the front camera on the fuze.
Once again, thanks everybody for your opinions.
I got my new display+ digitizer on Ebay (65$) and replaced it, using the russian link mentioned above ( follow the exact procedure) , it took me 2 hours to do it, and after lot of patience it worked! My problem was the digitizer never worked fine, and after replaced it it worked like never before. If You are not familiar with repairs, it will be a mistake and waste of money to buy a display without digitizer. NOW, I have a small problem, my display has a NEW color, it's like color temp is WARM for this display, and COLD for my old display, AND COLOR level is lower, and the result is display without vivid colors, black like gray. Is there any way to change the DISPLAY color settings?

[Q] Partially unresponsive touchscreen

Euhm, hey guys...
Last week I was in Austria for snowboarding, so at a certain moment I had my phone in my hand, and slipped in a small pile of snow....
My thumb made a small 'dent / scratch' in the screen, and the phone was a little wet for about 1/4th part of its total size.
Now, when I turn it back on, the touchscreen partially works and partially not.
When in the pin-code screen I can touch everything till the 7,8 and 9, under those (onscreen) buttons, the screen is unresponsive, and I believe the software buttons are also unresponsive, but I can't test because I can't get in my phone, neither with out without simcard...
My question were, is there any way I can manually fix this? Is it definitely a hardware problem?
I'm using a Sony Xperia Tipo, currently on Gimlo 0.2 Rom, Stock kernel, rooted, unlocked bootloader...
Uhmm, I don't know what information you guys need apart from this. Hope someone can help me :good:
EDIT1: Hardware problem indeed, flashed stock, still no response on the supposedly broken screen parts...
(Disassembling guide?)
Sorry for the bump,
Does anyone know if there's any guide on disassembling an Xperia Tipo yet?
I'm considering replacing the digitalizer manually. Found a website where I can get the digitalizer + glass quite cheap, and well, as I tried alot of things, and I cannot even unlock the lockscreen because of the broken part of what probably is the digitalizer (no real cracks tho, just unresponsive), I think there's no other way then either go to a service center and hope to be lucky to get this done with warranty OR fixing it manually...
the first thing comes into my mind is trying to dry the phone. there might be a little water inside the phone. I don't know how you could do it on your place but we have a tool called desicator on our lab which could be used to get rid the waters. if you don't have it you can make it by yourself. you can use a litle jar and silica gels. put your phone inside the jar then bury it with the silica gels. after 24 hours you can try to turn it on. another cheap solution is bury your phone inside rice (the uncooked one). the rice will just like silica gels and adsorb the water partikels.
anyway, in my country service center almost never check the bootloader. if you're lucky enough you can claim the warranty and got free repair or even a phone replacement. goodluck mate.
We have something called "Contact Spray" or something, which should do the same.
Anyways, I've waited about 36h after it happened to first try to turn it on again, thing is, the phone seems to function normally, except a PART of the touch screen.
I'll try the rice / gels thing. Not sure if it'd make any difference though.
Thx for the tip, I'm not sure about our Sony Centers, Dutch people are a bit 'greedy' usually, they'll probably check, but hope I'm lucky.
Also hope they won't say it's water-damage, because that's not covered in warranty in europe, although I'm pretty sure that isn't the real cause... Service Centers like letting us pay for reasons that are untrue in this country... -_-

Display replacement and troubles

First, sorry my english. If anything is incomprehensible, ask me.
Not long ago I dropped the device and fell to a gravel, not defended by the ?Gorilla Glass. It became a spider web. Essentially, the device was working, sensing the touch, and the display was relatively intact in just one spot a little pressed. I ordered a replacement part from here, because the glass also fell and because it couldn't stay. I chose express delivery, stuff arrived within 1 week. I have made it difficult to disassemble the device because the back is glued together. It didn't want to come down, I tried all kinds of plastic tools they had given and what they were, but the glue was so strong that they all broke (I'll be curious to know how to put them together). I had to use a paper cutter, because it is sharp and goes into the gap. Unfortunately, the breakdown at the corner is slightly visible, but it must be as much trouble. Luckily the adhesive came out of the battery. (I will also have to order it from somewhere for rebuilding ). The main panel also came out of the house nicely. If we are already here, I removed the unwanted heat conductor paste and replaced it with quality Grizzly.
The display did not want to come out, it glued to the frame so strongly that it was impossible to remove it. I managed to do it in pieces, and I licked the remainder for half an hour. Worse, there is something new, no matter. Then I realized that the new one had no glue, and that the old one could not be removed because it was not an adhesive, but something like a very thin siloplast. I have injection needles and black silo, so I can make up. No loudspeaker lattice was added. I hope I can take the old one somehow to stay together. And here comes the black soup:
I plugged in the cable and turned the phone on (not screwed up with just a few screws to hold it). I have a picture, I started to calm down. Need to unlock it, but don't works, it don't feel my finger. Nowhere. If I remove the factory foil, either. I looked at the stuff in more detail. The photo already shows that something is wrong in the lower right corner of the display. The original has a large square-shaped Synaptics S3330 chip, the touch panel controller (like Mi 5). However, this is missing from the replacement device, with a much smaller IC of "S20A X705E24". I have no idea what it is, but it is also suspicious that a ribbon cable goes below the original and there is nothing there. But on the site of the seller there is also the ribbon cable in the pictures and it is highlighted as "Multi fingers touch chip". This may be some great big scam. However, if it have a Touch controller IC and something that is supposed to work in principle, then the Synaptics driver (kernel module) is loaded on Android. I suspect that then this IC should get the kernel module somewhere and should be loaded to work with a rooted device. But I also thought that I would try some other rom (AOSP, LineageOS) and see if it would go with it, but chances are that Recovery would not work with a USB mouse + keyboard. Maybe there are different hardware versions of Chinese and global versions? Because it is possible that Chinese (or eu) would work.
I wrote to the seller that the stuff wasn't working, he said I would remove the connectors with an alcoholic cloth (of course he didn't help). Until then, the time was up to 15 days, so I can't start a dispute. He asked me how he could help, I wrote to him that I didn't know but I needed another display in this device. I wrote to him that he might be able to return my money or send another display. He said that if I stood at 75% of the cost then he would send a new one. At first I would have gone into it, but now that I've examined this and it turned out, I wrote it and sent the picture as well. I don't expect anything good.
I found another seller that is already fitted with the frame (minimal more expensive), maybe there shouldn't be any fun with gluing, I could do better if this is not solved this way.
What do you think about this whole thing?
That gold one is dor mix 2,and that black one is for mi mix 2s, right?

Overheating mark on the screen - any DYI ways to have it go away?

A family member of mine has a Redmi Note 5 since last September and has been a very happy user when one day, with no warning beforehand, a semi-circular, ring spot appeared on the right hand side of the screen, it looks like THIS now. It's not like it was getting worse for some time, it was just - one day it's OK, the next day, this appears. The phone hasn't been dropped, kept near any warm spot or constricted in any way, it has its separate pocket in the purse (and spends 95% of the day flat on the table anyways). Since appearing around 3 months ago, it became significantly longer vertically, like twice, as shown in the photo.
After googling, this seems like it may be a low-quality glue issue after extensive heating of the device in normal usage. I've tried having this fixed under warranty but the store basically told me to go freak myself and I can't do much with that (well, there's warranty laws in my country for you) apart from going to court or paying for the repair from my pocket. Thus, I decided to first explore if there's anything I may try at home before doing either. Anybody had success with fixing this on their own somehow? I know the chances are slim but still, it'd be nice if I didn't have to shill out half the price of the phone to fix it now

I don't have this device myself but, it looks like it's likely 1 of 3 things that may have caused this...
1) The device itself or something else may have heated that area of the device enough to cause the adhesive glue to slightly separate. This would have happened between the layers of the Touchscreen itself (the actual Glass and Digital Display).
2) The device could have been pressed just hard enough on that area to cause damage to the Digitizer display itself. This can happen a number of ways like being in a pocket, in a purse, on a surface where something was placed on that portion, etc... etc...
3) The device was simply dropped/placed hard enough onto the floor, counter, etc... that affected that spot.
Anyways... I've seen some chatter regarding this device (and some others) not having the greatest quality Digitizer from the manufacturer and ends up being damaged extremely easy (easier than usual).
The following link has a similar looking display issue as yours on the same device too.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/comments/ai0dln/weird_ring_spot_appearing_on_redmi_note_5s_screen
It looks, to me, like you may have to replace the Digitizer Display Assembly. This type of damage is really not fixable.
This is only my opinion/suggestion and the best guidance that I can provide.
I do wish you the best of luck!
