I created simple app to turn auto-backlight function on/off really quickly. I missed that feature on my HD2 and the need of doing 5 moves to get it changed was not much user friendly. So here is the solution!

Thanks for all your comments and ideas. This lead to following two versions that looks to be final.
AutoBacklightToggle (last update 2010/05/30):
Simply install the CAB below and you will get new program in Start menu called "AutoBacklight". When you tap the icon, it changes your auto-backlight setting from on to off or backwards based on your current state. Simple and effective.
AutoBacklightSteps (last update 2010/09/29):
The "Steps" are extended version of toggle. You can set predefined backlight settings that will be called each time you run the app. Let's say you select 10, 50, 100, Auto. First time you run the app, the backlight is set to 10%, second time to 50%, then to 100% and finally to Autobacklight. In next step the 10% setting will be back again.
There were few changes done on 09/29 (v1.0):
- the backlight is set to the same value for both the battery and external power.
- everyone can select what the steps will be (see below)
- everyone can select if he wants the change to be confirmed by pop-up window (see below).
Setting AutoBacklightSteps:
1) There is a new TXT file in Program Files/AutoBacklightSteps folder called AutoBacklightSteps.txt. All the setting is done in there manually.
2) The first line is used to adjust the steps. You can use numbers "10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100" or character "A" which means autobacklight. Separate all steps with comma, otherwise it will not work. I attached the default TXT file to this post for reference.
3) The second line is used to turn the notifications on/off. Write there Notification=1 to turn it on or 0 to turn it off.
What exactly does the program do? Is Auto-backlight depending the light sensor?
Yes. Auto-backlight uses the light sensor to adjust backlight. This function can be turned on/off in setting but it is hard to get there so I made simple app to toggle it using one tap.

Just had a genius idea. Is it possible that you could dim/brighten the backlight by holding in a hardware key? ie. Hold the button then it brightens gradually to 100% and then back down to zero etc.

Yes, you can use AEButtonPlus app and use your volume buttons to control your backlight in two stages by long pressing them (short press volume control). Low- medium-high. I love it and use it all the time.

If the default auto-backlight solution is too annoying you could just use Lumos... just Google the xda forums for it. Been using it from Touch HD to now and still works great.
I made something similar just a little while back that also functioned as a launcher for haret (ie, to launch Android) on the TP2. Are you just toggling the registry key, or are you directly controlling the function?

Yep, just changing registry value. It is good that it takes effect immediatelly after you change it.

Ya, I was surprised to find that it seemed to take effect almost instantly. How do you suppose that works, some HTC program constantly polling that value?
Is it "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\ControlPanel\\BackLight", "LightDetectOn" on the HD2 as well? I wonder if it's consistent across HTC devices.

under menu or settings, you can switch on or off the auto-backlight and if it's off, you can manually adjust the backlight easily.

Outstanding! It is just what I was thinking today... I need a AutoBackLight toggle function, because I like to have my screen on 90% (in battery mode) but when I'm using it to maybe just read (white text on a black background (which I wish there was more of)) for long periods, want to save a bit on battery life or in a fairly dark room, I want to be able to easily switch to 'auto' and back again when required.

I would love to find a program that would change volume or a profile based on GPS location. I'm in and out of the office all day, and would like the phone to change to vibrate when I'm at a pre-specified GPS position.
Also, it would be nice to have it be able to send a text message, so when I'm on my way home, when I get to a specified location, it could send a message that I'm almost home.
If anyone knows of such a program, I'd be really happy.

Hi, i've recently been trying out the mango OS on my LG E900, seems great so far but I've got a couple of queries.
First of all the status bar at the top, showing phone signal, 3g, battery life etc, how do I get that to stay at the top all the time?
Bing maps/turn by turn nav. Why do I have to constantly tap the screen to wake it? Also when it needs to re-calculate the route I have to tap the screen. Isn't there an auto setting? Seems bizarre that I have to take my eye off the road to wake the nav up.

I believe this is to do with your SIM card. The phone is simply displaying the number being presented to it by your SIM. I may be wrong there though.

You cannot. Windows Phone 7 was designed to only display that information when necessary.

Odd, if I am using navigation the screen will stay on for me and won't turn off. I think this is a bug that should be fixed because I've seen other people state this is happening to them too.
As for the phone auto-recalculating, there is no auto setting, and it's not a 'known limitation' but rather, by design. Hopefully they add an auto-recalculate option someday.

Your phone should automatically update your phone number after some time. While your new number takes effect immediately on your carrier's network, it can sometimes take time for your phone to reflect the change.

This "tap the screen" exercise has - as far as I know - legal reasons. Microsoft only got the right to use the Navteq map under the condition that they would not provide a fully automated turn by turn app. MS' work around is that they do offer turn by turn navigation, but since you have to tap the screen to make it advance to the next turn, it is not "fully automated".
Since Navteq is fully owned by Nokia and since Nokia and MS have partnered, one can hope that this stupid restriction will go away eventually.

Yep the turn by turn navi limitation is known and isn't OS limited. Its actually a licensing limitation. Some searching will bring up deeper legal reasons as stated above. And just get the Turn by Turn Navigation app. Its well sweet (and worth the $4.99) even in trial mode.

Hi, I created app "ScreenLock Gear", because I want to monitor my sleep with locked bezel, eliminate turning screen on by my shirt etc. The mission of this thread is to make it comfortable for all of us.
So what is it?
Simple application for screen locking (bezel/screen/button).
Add widget -> Customise -> Tap to lock -> Enjoy locked screen
I uploaded new version (2.0) to Gear store. Description of the new version:

I would prefer it you keep it simple but I'm sure others will have requests for more options.
As I wrote elsewhere, when logging walks/hikes, the strap of my hiking pole hits the Back and On buttons and it eventually terminated the logging of my hikes. So this would be a perfect way to prevent accidental touchs of the buttons or screen from changing things.

No, the ScreenLock has no impact to any logging. Because it does simple job: When DISPLAY TURN ON, call DISPLAY TURN OFF. It is like if you set screen timeout to 0.3 sec. So it is only shortening screen timeout, having no negative impact on battery life or influence of logging.

Yes, it can be used, but now only with screen off. S health will continue to log your trip, but you can't see your statistics until you unlock the screen, which is not so comfortable. Maybe only on long hikes. It is in my future plans to enable this app on top of another app.

Used it on a 3 mile walk this afternoon. It appears to have worked fine. Shealth still informed me of my statistics at 1, 3 and 3 miles including pace, distance and heart rate. I played with the buttons while walking and the screen stayed dark (there is the brief message "locked") and did not interrupt my hike log. This walk was not as strenuous and steep as the one last week that prematurely ended when the pole straps pressed the wrong buttons. But since I was pressing randomly, it stayed locked.
I was easy to UNlock it and then to stop Shealth's logging.
Obviously, with the screen locked I could not see what the email alerts were but that is fine. I don't have to be permanently connected to my email.

Thanks for the app. I've found I light them room up if I hit the watch while in bed. I may see if tasker can lock the watch at a certain time and maybe even unlock it. I don't know how difficult it would be for you but adding those features would be nice additions. Again, great job and THANKS!!

I've been using this app every night for the past several days. Only issue I have noticed is that when I move my wrist, the watchface will show for 1/2 a second or less then give the "locked" notice. Overall tho, this works great and I really appreciate you sharing it with us.

Can you please clarify? Can't I use your app if I need Pin also? I use Samsung Pay, so it's mandatory to have pin protection.

The problem is, when PIN protection is enabled, I'm not able to monitor keys or run my app, since PIN protection is killing everything because of safety reasons.
But you can use it. Locking will work. Only unlock will be harder, because app has no chance to monitor BACK key for exit. I will try to solve it somehow, but now, this unlocking would work with PIN enabled:
- Press HOME several times. This will minimise ScreenLock app, so you can write your pin.
- Then you will see black screen, press BACK several times. Otherwise the ScreenLock will start on another SCREEN ON event.
So it's not comfortable yet, but it works.

i need to have one particular app permanently on screen (Skydive altimeter) during a certain period of gime (approximately 5 min ). It's essential that the bezel doesn't interfere so it would be great if your app could block it but I must see the interface of Skydive altimeter. Is it possible?

First off, thanks so much for this app, I don't understand why Samsung didn't put this type of feature directly in the gear... Anyways, I'll test this tonight and see how it goes
However, is it possible for you to add an option page where you can decice how to unlock and if we can show the number of unlock tentatives? On my end, I would prefear if the gear stayed fully off, without showing the number of tentatives.

More than happy with app
I used the app a few times hiking and find it working very well. It keeps S-health's log going and the underlying S-health app does not prematurely terminate logging of my hike or walk because something (like the straps from my hiking poles) has activated the Home or Back buttons.
And even though I have Samsung Pay activated and have a password/pin your app does not interfere.

I could be missing something, but changing the move interval seems to make no difference.
I was hoping to make scrubbing as smooth as in the iOS Photos app, but no matter what value I set it to, it still stops at the same frames and is very far from what I'd call smooth.
The move interval doesn't do that, it adds a button to skip forwards/backwards x amount of seconds (for the button to show up you need to check the box).

It's right under the checkbox that activates the button too.
