Changing SMS / Email Notifications - General Topics

Sorry if this has already been answered, I have put a new wav sound into the Windows directory and can select this from the sounds list under Sounds & Notifications, but for some unknown reason the sound does not play when I tap the play button. What am I doing wrong??
I am trying to amend the SMS notification sound on my XDA 2
ROM version - 1.60.00WWE
Rom Date - 12/03/03
Radio Version - 1.10.00
Protocol Version - 1337.18
Ent Rom Version - 1.60.50
Any help will be appreciated
Thanks

The file should be a true uncompressed WAV file. Otherwise, it won't play.

Thanks Jargon , I downloaded the wav file from www.wavsource.com so I assume is is uncompressed but it still won't work
Can someone please send me a uncompressed wav file for me to test, my email address is [email protected]
Thanks

How to build:
Step-1: Download and unrar the ROM_DEV_2.rar. It should look like "C:\ROM_DEV" after the unrar.
You will find two cmd files (1. BuildKitchen.cmd and 2. CreateROM.cmd) inside the ROM_DEV folder after the unrar.
Step-2: Download the desired OEM's and the empty ExtROM (if you need it)
Step-3: Run the BuildKitchen.cmd (first time only), it will dump the rom and prepare the kitchen for you.
Step-4: Copy the OEM's to OEM folder (i.e. C:\ROM_DEV\OEM\) and empty ExtROM to ExtROM folder (i.e. C:\ROM_DEV\ExtROM\)
Step-5: Run the CreateROM.cmd to build the rom
Step-5.1: Click on Start in "BuildOS" and close the dialog when done.
Step-5.2: Encode the rom, click on Encode, select the project file, Encode and exit the dialog. It may complain you that the file is too large....just ignore it.
Step-5.3: Set your device to bootloader mode, connect the USB cable and start burning...
You can use BuildKitchen.cmd to dump other WM6 rom and prepare the kitchen. In that case, decode the rom, copy (or overwrite) the nk.nba file to the ROM folder and run this cmdfile to build your own kitchen.

Hello all,
VERSION 1 was my first ENGLISH ROM cook and it seemed to be pretty stable, based on Nitrogenious v5 Greek edition (Nitrogenious--THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HARD WORK!!).
****NOTE**** BEFORE FLASHING ANY OF THE BELOW VERSIONS, IT IS RECOMMENDED TO PERFORM A "format BINFS" TO ELIMINATE ANY PRE-EXISTING ROM FILES AND AVOID ANY UNUSUAL BEHAVIOR/CONFLICTS (FOR FURTHER RATIONALE GO TO PAGE 53 AND POST #529 here), FOLLOW KARHOE'S GREAT GUIDE:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1453008#post1453008

can i still make calls from my dopod 577w?
congrats on your ROM mate!
glad to see all these hardwork.
Thanks ericjm!!
@admin22,
No GSM means no radio, you are just able to pick the radio you want. This is just the OS. If you already have radio on your system, you should still be able to make calls if you were able to before. If you want the latest radio version just search for the radio version 4.1.13.28_02.61.01 and you will find one. I will try to upload one to Rapidshare for you.
Here is Rapidshare link for this radio:
http://rapidshare.com/files/68584762/GSM_Radio_4.1.13.28_02.61.zip.html
Thanks
WOW!!! Nice work, vjgrace. You really did it! Almost 20MB free internal storage; a new record!!!
Welcome to the ROM cooking game, pal!
Btw, "Phonebook Speed Dial key mappings changed to match t9" refers to the Greek character key mapping (in original Greek ROM the character key mapping in Speed Dial was different than the one in SMS editing!!!), so you don't need to describe it as a feature. Because of that "feature", there is no Cyrillic character support in Speed Dial, unless you install the package I provide here.
@admin(!!!)22:
You can also upgrade the GSM together with the bootloader, using the SPL link in my signature.
So what's your review on this, Nitro?
Will I like it better than EA's chinese/english?
As I have already said, there is no good, better or best ROM. There is only the one that satisfies you and your needs. EA's has many new settings, but lacks of application quantity. This one has many useful applications and more free space. It's your call...
My english ROM was just a very rush release to satisfy all you non-greek Tornado owners. EA's ROM was a great update. But this ROM is just what I really wanted to release!
Keep up the good work, vjgrace! If you need any help/advice for future releases, don't hesitate to ask.
EDIT: I've just noticed that the available memory/storage values are written vice versa.
Created final version
Hello all,
Refer to post #1, I have v2 still listed in post #1 if you still want it, but I have finished a final version, which is listed in post #1. I have deleted the link and text to the version in this post to decrease confusion, thanks!!!
Well, OK, but... What's the point of loosing all these apps and games for a 0.01kb gain? I don't think you should release a new version, unless you replace all those kBytes with something more usefull.

I quite liked your ROM. EA's worked better for me (after tweaking the audiogain), probably because of the fewer applications.
I'm not entirely sure which of your included apps was causing me the trouble, but if I could have resolved that, I'd likely not have bothered trying yet another.
I guess that for me, less is more.
@Nitrogenious,
Thanks for your comments, you are correct...definitely not much gain on the storage side of it, but a little on the memory side (0.34mb) not much though. I really just wanted to give the option of more control/options for the base with the ability to still use the apps on the storage card.
@Exitao,
I too am under the train of thought that less is more...that is without effecting storage amount.
If you have the audiogain tweak maybe I could implement in the registry...Just let me know.
Thanks again for your comments, they are appreciated!!

Since you have not removed any applications from the StartUp directory, you have no memory gain or loss. What you should always consider an error of +-1MB maximum. Why? Because of the cache. If you browse more the Start Menu before checking the available memory you'll see less of it. If you open the Home Screen settings before the System Setting, free memory is again reduced. So, an error of +-1MB should always be considered!
And also do not forget the ...Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle for Windows Mobile; the memory report utility consumes an amount of memory.
In other words, you have no gain in available memory by removing a non-startup application, even it seems so.

I don't know why but the speaker phone was really quiet. I tried some tweaks I found in the forums, but apparently audiogain tweaks don't always work well across different smartphones.
The one I settled on came from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1374443&postcount=108
However, in my mucking about I may have altered others before using the ones he mentions above. So below are my current settings (excluding the handsfree/car stuff I've never used, let alone tweaked):
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HTC\audiogain1]
"CODEC_GAIN_EMBEDDED"=hex:\
A0
"SPEAKER_UPLINK_VOLUME"=hex:\
10
"EAC_GAIN_EMBEDDED"=hex:\
79
"RECEIVE_UPLINK_VOLUME"=hex:\
10
"EARPHONE_UPLINK_VOLUME"=hex:\
32
Maybe you could tell me what your settings are so I can see what I've changed...?
Hello Exitao,
Thanks for the PM regarding that link to this ROM, boy that is frustrating, I just sent you a PM. Thanks again.
Well, here is the registry for this ROM...I haven't noticed a decrease in speakerphone volume but I will definitely listen to see if my phone is affected. If so, I will implement your provided tweak in an updated version to make sure this ROM has the optimal tweaks.
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HTC\AUDIOGAIN]
"DeviceID"="Generic_20050926"

@Nitrogenious, THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENTS...GREAT INFORMATION!!!
Thanks again,
vjgrace
P.S. to Exitao...This block of code I just provided proves that the individual who is taking credit for this ROM build on that link is a fraud because the only way to get this specific block of code (from this build and this version) is to dump the rom and build the rgu files. What a shame.
I quite like EA's ROM because of the extra UI setting tweaks. Does this have such UI tweaks?
Thanks
Hello illi,
Thanks for the inquiry...I was actually about to ask Nitrogenious how to manipulate the registry to add those tweaks. Thanks to Nitrogenious this does have some extra settings tweaks (display timeout adjustment, IE tweaks, Voice tag location tweaks, and more), I am not sure how many more EA's version has (I haven't dumped and located), but hopefully I will be able to find out those values and implement them in this version.
Thanks again for the questions.

Hi vjgrace,
Thanks for the quick reply. I hope your next release will compliment at least EA's if not more on the UI tweaks. I especially am interested to have the IE and Inbox folders in Storage Card; (its a pain to manually tweak the registry every time I flash different ROM). I have also tweaked the \Volatile folder to point to Storage Card. It saves as well and at least maintain the speed/responses when running applications.
Thank you.
Hello illi,
Looks like we are online at the same time, that's pretty wild (I usually don't answer questions quickly). Anyway, I asked Nitrogenious about the tweak values and hoping to get a response. Once I know where to look to manipulate those values I can dump EA's ROM, find his values and hopefully implement them in this version. Always easier to manipulate registry in Settings rather than registry edit, if you know what I mean.
Thanks again

@admin22,
No GSM means no radio, you are just able to pick the radio you want.

I have one question: how can I bind Long_VolDown shortcut with MultiFlashLight? I've created a shortcut and it works, but MFL starts at the same time, as Cyberion VoiceCommand...

Location of Outlook signatures and ringer profiles?

Hello,
I've done some looking (exporting and comparing .reg files of the registry) and am unable to find either of the following two bits of info:
The outlook signatures
and
the ringer profiles
I'd like to edit the signature to hopefully contain HTML, and add a few ringer profiles.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt
[edit]
Minor progress with profiles:
Create a key in HKCU\ControlPanel\Profiles
with the following values: String {name:"LocName", value:[name in list]}; DWord {name:"Order", value:[next in list, e.g. 6], name:"Name", value:[name]}; }
Access .\Application Data\Profiles and copy one of the [name from reg value].prof.xml files and rename to (if you don't have one, modify the normal profile and the file will be created).
Pretty simple.
thanks

Android - merge two MP4 files

Does anybody know about way to merge two MP4 video files directly in the phone? i've tried cat in Terminal emulator, it joined the files, but than the playbackl stops after the first file contained in the result, quite logically.
Anybody has some other way?
I know that mencoder can join two clips, but I can't find android binary for it.
Hello,
Have you found how it can be done?
Regards,
Ruslan
i thinkg you will remove head from 2nd-file before merge
Wouldn't it require the removal of the MP4 headers though?
I tryied it:
1. Create new file.mp4
2. Copy first.mp4 into file.mp4 (A read full bytes from file and write it)
3. Repeat point 2 fot second.mp4
Yes, it is stupid.. But this file will be played by Windows Media Player(I tested it).
So, How can I undestand what kind of bytes is header of second.mp4?
Does mp4 contains special separator?
I am afraid, that it simply stops playing the final product at "the right time", marked by header in the beginning of the file (=first clip). I think that to merge them without reencoding, we would have to "clip" the second header & redo the first one, to match the total length.
May be do you know some Android plugins(I mean .jar files e.g. ) witch can merge mp4 files or 3gp..?
I know, that mencoder can join two MP4 files quite easily. But I can't find any version working on Android.
If anyone found out a solution please share it here
no, nobody did I believe. To merge two MP4s you need to modify at least the header, probably even more. What we need is ffmpeg, which can be run in the terminal.

[Dec 2012] Android SMS Importer from WM PimBackup files

This utility allows to convert PimBackup files to XML one which is
compatible with Android application "SMS Backup&Restore" created by

in order to start using it, just run the executable file.
WARNING: I've tried to restore about 11,000 SMS with success on "Motorola Atrix 4G" and it seems to freeze many times while running stock "Text Messaging" application.....so I think 11,000 SMS is too much to handle for Android OS

Create a good backup file with PimBackup
=================================
The software is dummy and need a good/perfect file to work fine; in other words it needs
a good PimBackup file.
Let's create that file:
* open PimBackup in your Windows Mobile phone/smartphone
* choose "Backup" from dropdown list
* select sections as you wish but not forget "Messages"!!
* press "Next"
* (if you have a lot of SMS do not select "Create temp files in memory")
* press "Next" and go-on following the Wizard....
Find CSM or PBM file
===================
At the end of procedure above you will have a single PIB file.
This file is compressed and you can open it with WinZip/WinRAR/7Zip.
* So, please open it and look for "*.cms" or "*.pbm" file.
* Extract it from the compressed file.
That's it!!
Start the conversion
==================
Ones located CSM/PBM file you will want to convert it, right?
* Open "PimbackupDroid.exe" (this software of course!)
* Click "Menu --> Open" and select a CSM/PBM file
* [only for CMS] Enter "Your phone number for comparison". This field is necessary because
this is the only way to identify you as the sender of outgoing messages.
You can use simple numbers without international prefix (Ex: 0039 or +39).
* (optional) Check "Only between dates" to force convert just SMS between
two specified dates. It works for both incoming and outgoing messages.
* (optional) Check "Blacklist" OR "Whitelist" radio button if you want to
EXCLUDE (blacklist) some contacts or you just WANT (whitelist) convert
just some specified contacts.
!!WARNING!! - Blacklist and Whitelist using "Partial" input data, in
other words if you will add "Edward" in one of those all
contacts CONTAINS "Edward" word will be blacklisted/whitelisted,
for example also "Edward2" will be affected.
Both Blacklist and Whitelist are case insensitive (no difference between
"Smith" and "SMITH").
* Press "Start" button. It will generate a NEW file with the same name of original
one but with ".xml" extension. (!!WARNING!! - it doesn't ask for overwriting)
Import XML file on Android OS
========================
Now you have an XML file generated with this utility and you need to download
a small (and FREE) application from Android Market:
*SMS Backup & Restore" created by "Ritesh Sahu" (!!!check the author name!!!)
Install it
Before run this new installed utility you need to create a new "SMSBackupRestore"
folder in you Internal Phone Storage's root directory.
Now you can copy your XML file to this new folder and run the new Android application.
This Android utility is very very easy to understand: just press "Restore" button
and select your XML file.
Now wait until errors (ops!!) or successfully popup window!
System Requirements
==================
This utility works properly on all 32-bit/64-bit versions of Windows,
including Windows 98/ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows
Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Seven and Windows 8.
Personally tested on: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, Windows XP 32bit and Windows 8 Pro 64bit
Linux users: I think this software will works with "WINE" but not tested.

Any idea on what to add more to this software??
Post reserved to author
This sounds great. I have a lot of old SMS I'm missing after switching to android. I'm going to test it as soon as I'm with my PC tommorow morning. Will report back then.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
emandt, I tried to download your SW from the page you have listed, but it looks like folder is empty...?
As I've wrote in first post: project just opened at SF.net, so be patient
I'm creating a small README as Guide and prepare source code to place it on SF.net very soon.
OK, I was under impression at least test version is available. I'll wait
Released the first version few hours ago.
Check the Limitations (first post) before post a bug
I've realized my PIM backup files are .pib, not .csm. Is there any way how to move it to .csm? Except of restoring and archiving again through WM...I have only one phone
Thanks.
Please read the description at first post or the README file following the EXE.....
The ".CSM" file IS INTO the PIB file.
PIB file is just a compressed file to handle multiple files in single one.
Use WinZip / WinRaR / 7-Zip to open the PIB file and extract CSM one.
If your backup was created with "Binary backup(faster)" options it's impossibile to convert with my software (no any description/protocol about "How To Read" a Binary file created by BimBackup)....so, in this case, I think you need to Restore all messages and start the backup (without THAT option!!) again....sorry.
However I will study (raw mode with thousands of tries) "Binary backups" to allow them as non-binary ones.
I'm sorry I have overlooked this step. The problem is that even when I open .pib file, there is no .csm. Actualy, all extensions begin with .p**. Could be the reason that I have somehow checked "binary backup" in WM PIM?
I'm hot to test your SW but obviously I'm not a good tester
BTW, why don't you move this topic between general android applications, to have it more visible in the forum?
I'm trying to read binary backup files but without any description from author is very very hard to resolve this step. I've not found a schema for the data into binary files yet.
I've studied BINARY backup and already found half-solution, at least for NAME, TELEPHONE_NUMBER and TEXT_MESSAGE.....not I'm stuck at "Date and Time field"....
I've wrote to PimBackup author and I hope he will respond me with the solution.
Stay tuned
Nice initiative
Hi,
first of all, congrats for the iniative. Sorrowfully, it doesn't work for me (Access Violation at address 004ccea0 [...] @ address 00000004
If this helps: W7 x64 Pro @i5
For people who have their backups in binary format, from this same forum (don't remember the threads tho, sorry) came these tips:
1) Download Microsoft Windows mobile 6.5 Professional Developer Tools (goole it or "Windows Mobile 6.5 emulator");
2) run the appropriate version of the emulator;
3) "install PimBackup and restore your backup (set up a "shared Folder" for that, it will appear as a storage card);
4) redo your backup without binary format unchecked;
5) have fun! (if you're reading this thread, you know the rest already )
Also, see this link: Transferring contact list from Windows Mobile to Android SANS OUTLOOK
Have fun! I'll have to wait the next stable version.
It's strange....I'm using Win 7 Ultimate 64bit in italian language.
What OS language?
What is your OS alphabet in use?
I've developed this application quiclky and I don't have considered alphabets and non-latin characters. Maybe it could be this.
I'll spend more time to make it works on other OS settings
@tuliogs: if your Error is generated during startup of application you can try new version (v.1.0.0.1 folder on download section) which has an uncompressed Executable file to increase compatibility on Windows OS.
Otherwise: I need more explanations about that Error.
not yet
I get the error when trying to convert the file. Win7 here is in brazilian portuguese, I guess it's UTF-8 (or else, probably Windows-1251, which in turn is an ISO 8859-1 variant, I guess).
Just tried the new version... same issue, but it now shows where it stops: on a self-test SMS (explained below). It was enough to change the "phone number for comparison" field and _that_ issue was solved. However, please keep reading.
I found some "anomalies" in some messages in my file, though:
some are self-tests I sent to myself or just empty drafts. this seems to be the issue described before;
some contain the whole phone numbers including country codes and the plus sign (no trouble with those ones);
some archived messages contain line breaks: these are plain skipped;
duplicate messages, some within a short interval (3 secs or less) disappear also;
different cellphones use different text encodings so you guess the mess... however, overall text is more important than specific characters, so it's relevant to say I had no problem at all with these, apart from getting alien symbols (which don't bother me).
I had to abandon Android on my Kaiser to revamp it from scratch (therefore, WM again aawwww), so I can't test the final result now, but there's a Samsung Galaxy S (Froyo, I guess) coming in a few days. So if you'd wish to attack those issues in the meantime, I'll gladly test the final result when time comes.
Thank you again and keep up the good work.
Nice to have so detailed error description!!
New version was compiled just without "Compress executable" option because I thought your error were caused on startup and not during conversion.
Can you send me just a complete row (you can manually edit a row to create fake text) of CSM file with many brazilian characters??
Now I'll try with:
- self test messages
- many special characters (also line-breaks)
outgoing SMS is sucessfully converted,
but I cannot found any incoming message in the output files...
Here are the first few line of the output:
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" standalone="yes"?>
<smses count="196">
<sms protocol="0" address="" date="1284300650000" type="1" body="回到家了啦" read="1" status="-1" contact_name="" />
<sms protocol="0" address="" date="1286260959000" type="1" body="整緊" read="1" status="-1" contact_name="" />
@azothterry: TYPE="1" means "Inbox" but perhaps this wrong decode depends of strange Input data.
I've tested with my latinian-alphabet without special chars (comma, points and few single-quote chars) and it works.
To allow other alphabets/characters I need few lines from your CSM file, expecially with special chars.
Don't forget to set "Number for comparison" field with your partial (without international prefix) phone number.
